Dear Science Supervisor:

The mission of the Science Teachers Association of New York State (STANYS) is “to work with educators and communities to provide opportunities for all students to participate in and learn science.”

In the past, in order to further our mission, the Nassau Section of STANYS has sponsored annual workshops where both new and experienced teachers might hear the latest from our Subject Area Representatives and other experienced professionals. Also, in partnership with the Suffolk Section of STANYS, we have encouraged participation in scientific research through the Long Island Science Congress. This annual science fair has over a thousand student participants from grades 7-12. Many of our teacher members serve as judges and organizers at this popular event.

Now we ask for your support for our Twelfth Annual Nassau STANYS Science Awards Dinner. This year’s event is scheduled for 6 pm, Tuesday, 19 May 2009 at the Coral House in Baldwin. At the dinner, STANYS will honor one outstanding senior from each member high school. This outstanding student will be presented with a plaque commemorating the honor. Each recipient may also select one teacher to share the evening. Student honorees and their selected teachers will be our guests at the dinner. Many of your schools have participated in the past and we hope that it has proven to be an exciting and rewarding experience.

In addition to the Science Awards Dinner, each member school is entitled to:

·         nominate one elementary, one intermediate, and one high school teacher for consideration as Nassau STANYS Outstanding Teacher. If chosen by the Nassau Executive Committee to receive the award, the teacher will be our guest at the Science Awards Dinner.

·         registration for two teachers from your school at our Spring Workshop on March 25 at Jonas Salk Middle School in Levittown.

We need your support and encouragement in order to recognize talented high school seniors in science. We hope to count your high school among the schools represented in this important endeavor. Enclosed is an invoice for your approval. Please return (prepaid) by March 15, 2009. We have also enclosed the form for the nomination of your outstanding senior science student, and an application for outstanding elementary, intermediate, and/or high school teachers, for consideration by the award selection committee.

We thank you in advance for your support of our science students and science education in Nassau County.

Sincerely,

Michael J. Hanophy Ph. D
