For my essay, I have decided to research what part the media has played in the rise in divorces per year over the last one hundred years. My theory is that the media's unrealistic portrayal of men and women in romantic settings has given the American population unrealistic expectations and ideals of the opposite sex. When these expectations and ideals are not satisfied, one may become discontent with his or her spouse and seek satisfaction outside of marriage. When people seek satisfaction outside of marriage, divorce is often the result, which disrupts the family and causes further problems with the ex-couples children (if they have had children). In my essay, I intend to prove that the media has had this harmful effect on the public, and that they are atleast partly responsible for the collapse of the modern marriage. |
