The Chinese history of globalization is not really restricted to our current era. Its beginnings can be traced back many centuries to the earliest trade, such as the Silk Road. One of globalizations key characteristics is "joining the world," which China has done for a long time now.
China began to really modernize in the period that Mao came to power. Even though he was a dictator, he did modernize and China and make it a power until he killed off his people with a famine and his personalitity cults. The real globaization period began with Mao's successor Deng Xiopeng.
Deng reformed China into a captilist economy, and we can see the results of that reform today. Deng made the necessary changes in order for China to gain income and make a profit.
