Many of China's problems today have been caused by one thing, globalization. Globalization has brought down China's culture, caused the environment to worsen and created problems for China's economy. But these problems aren't permanent. They can be fixed, and with enough effort by the Chinese, can be removed for good. Some people have already come up with solutions to China's problems; they just need to be implemented. The Chinese can solve the problems they have in their environment, their culture, and the economy. The problems in China's economy are not very big, but the effect they have could ruin the Chinese trade and industry. Luckily, the solutions to these problems are relatively easy to employ. First of all, there is the problem of pirating. Many people in China pirate software and sell it on the street for less. Andre Armstrong already has some ideas to prevent this. "Companies can place special codes on all their software to prevent anyone from copying the files. There also licensing restrictions that let the potential copier know that what he is doing is illegal. These restrictions also make it harder for someone to copy. Finally, governments can place severe consequences for copying if caught, and this would discourage anyone from copying because there is too much risk" (Armstrong). Pirating is not the only problem though. In the past, the Chinese have had problems with the unequal distribution of income. The Chinese government has been working on the problem. "The government has been working to fix the problem, but here is my solution, restructure the system so that it will be fair for everyone, as well as reforming it" (Peoples Daily). China also has many illegal items coming into the country because of the rapid expansion of trade. Creating new laws that allow workers to search ships and aircraft for illegal items can easily solve this problem. Another solution is to increase funding for current security, so they can do their job better. Border security and customs can also be increased to prevent anything from getting in. Many of the problems with trade can be easily solved, but it's a different story with culture. The Chinese culture has developed over the years into a way of life, with good food and holidays, but all this has been threatened by globalization. Their traditions have been less practiced and less people are attending to public holidays. This can be fixed in a few ways. "Chinese people should their traditions an holidays, more extensively and make time for them" (chinaview.cn). As well as celebrating more, the foreign companies that do not celebrate Chinese holidays should at least recognize them and give time off. Many foreign companies are also putting up ads and ruining the Chinese building style by putting in massive buildings and advertising. These companies should recognize the Chinese culture and try to fit in. Another thing that troubles the Chinese is the invasion of English. Many Chinese are learning this before learning Chinese or dropping Chinese for English. This isn't right because language is a big defining aspect of culture, and that shouldn't be thrown away so easily. The Chinese need to keep their identity by still practicing their own language and not letting English or the West dominate them. Foreign nations should respect the Chinese culture, especially Western business. Something else that needs to be respected is the Chinese environment. Many Chinese and foreign companies are producing so much to keep up with the growth of China that they don't care about where they dump waste and garbage, whether it be a garbage dump or the Pacific Ocean. This is not only bad for the animals and environment; it looks bad and can ruin the ozone layer and make us all miserable. But the Chinese have not forgotten about their environment. "Many of China's biggest companies are intent on improving their environmental standards and practices according to a survey by the World Wildlife Fund" (Xinhoa News Agency). This is a big step towards protecting the environment. Industrial pollution from factories and cars is also a major problem. But, many cities are making plans to reduce their pollution. "Shanghai, taking the lead in China in environmental protection has channeled about 32.8 billion yuan since 2000 into curbing industrial pollution, in a total of 3,610 projects and improving the environment for residents" (Shanghai Star). The government putting money into cleaning up the environment is excellent progress in saving the Chinese environment. Still, there are problems with china's exotic variety of animals. They are being hunted and killed off because of loss of habitat. This can be solved by creating wildlife preserves and keeping endangered animals in zoos to save them from extinction. This would keep anything from being built on the animal's habitat and keeping the animals in zoos would also protect them. If China can implement these ideas, the environment would be a much better place. It is obvious that not all of China's problems have been covered here. There are many more problems that need to be addressed, but solving the problems covered here is a step towards a better country. If China can correct its environmental dangers, then they will have a better place to live in. The Chinese can also correct their trade and industry problems to get more money and income. Finally, they can save their culture to provide on thing that will keep globalization from completely taking over their country. If China can do these things they will be a better country and will be able to survive in the 21st century. |
