Hello, my name is Alyssa Petersen.  I am a 13 year old who attends Wood Intermediate School in Davenport, Iowa.  I am the current National Jr Miss American Rose 2002 and am using this title to get my platform out to the public.

I thought it would be a cool idea to develop a program to benefit kids.  My program is called D.A.N.C.E.  Each letter stands for something to do with my program.  Drug free, Academics, Notoriety, Community service, Extra curricular.

Drug free:  It is very important to stay drug free if you are going to succeed in life.  I cannot stress enough what horrible effects drugs have on your body.

Academics:  It is very important to do your best in school.  You will go a lot farther in life if you have an education.

Notoriety:  You want to earn your notoriety by doing something good.  You don't want to be the person who gets noticed by doing bad things.  Do good things, get noticed and be proud of yourself.

Community service:  What a better way to meet new people and learn new things than by giving your time as a volunteer.  I feel very strongly about volunteering so if you want some ideas on what you can do as a kid volunteer, please come up and talk to me after the program.

Extra curricular:  I don't want you to just go to school and work as a volunteer.  You need to balance your life with fun also.  Get involved in sports, music or dance and have fun.

I want kids to do well and gain their notoriety through positive activities.  Like my sister, Sarah, my parents have given me great opportunities to develop my natural talent.  I LOVE to dance; I'd spend every day at the dance studio if they'd let me.  I take ballet, jazz, tap and acro-tumbling.  I model, am in choir, an alter server at Sacred Heart Cathedral, I'm on a bowling league, power tumbling team and a competition cheerleading squad.  I also enjoy participating in pageants as they give me a chance to earn money towards my college education as well as the chance to get out and talk to great kids like you.  It may seem like I do a lot of extra curricular activities but trust me, my parents wouldn't let me do all this if I wasn't able to maintain my 4.0 grade point average which is what always comes first.

Remember...you will go farther in life if you do good things and don't get caught up in the negative things.
