Birds and Bees, Flowers and Trees

Fur and Bone, Fossils and Stone

The lines which James Herriot got from an old Anglican hymn, and then used as titles for his books, would also be very appropriate to describe the articles and essays in this section.

"All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful,
The Lord God made them all."

The subjects of the essays are varied, and are about anything in nature that happened to be of interest to the writer, and that he or she thought might be interesting to other members. The lines quoted above have a religious ring to them which is sometimes expressed in the essays, but not always. Religion is a much more personal thing than is learning about nature. For many people the two subjects go hand in hand, and nature study can augment and enhance their religious feelings, but other people enjoy the one without the other. In this organization, the purpose is to learn about, experience, and enjoy the natural world.

The articles originally appeared in "Nature News Notes", the official publication of Utah Nature Study Society, and were prepared and submitted to the editor by members of the society. Some of the information was presented in handout form to participants in workshops and field trips sponsored by UNSS.
