TIPS
Making a Veil
You will need 2 1/2 to 3 yds of a light weight fabric that "flows" nicely.  Nylon and polyester chiffons,
silk, and very light knits usually work well.  Most dancers prefer a solid color that compliments their costume.  If you plan on trimming your veil, look in the trim section of the fabric store.  Sequin or metalic fabric trims are popular.  If you have a nice quality light weight silk veil you may not want to put trim on it.  The beauty of a silk veil is that is nearly floats on air.  Trim would spoil the effect.

Your veil can be either rectangular or circular (rounded on the bottom edge).  I prefer circular for a veil that will be draped on the costume.

If you are new to costume making it is best to keep it simple and inexpensive until you know what you
really want.  I would invest in an easy to care for and inexpensive, solid color and add a narrow metalic braid trim.  The trim will make it easier to find the edge as you dance.  2 1/2 yds. is plenty unless you have very long arms.

Just purchase 2 1/2 yds. of fabric and enough trim to go all the way around the edges (plus a bit more - just in case).  Buy thread to match the veil fabric.

Make sure the edges are straight and sew a narrow hem all the way around.  I usually take mine to a seamstress who has a machine that finishes the edge better than my sewing machine can.  Then hand sew the trim on.  You can do this while you watch TV.

I will add illustrations later -- when I learn how.  If you have any questions, bring your veil to class or e-mail me at njacobso@riverland.cc.mn.us
