Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc was organized on Sunday November 12, 1922 by Mary Lou Allison Little and six other school teachers: Dorthy Hanley Whiteside, Vivian White Marbury,Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, Hattie Mae Dulin Redford, Bessie M. Downey Martin, and Cubena McClure. The charter members are the founders of Sigma Gamma Rho.

The group became an incorporate national  collegiate sorority on December 30. 1929, when a charter was granted to the Alpha Chapter at Butler University.

In keeping with the ideals of Sigma Gamma Rho, the sorority has supported the following organizations: National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, National Council of Negro Women, National Pan Hellenic Council, National Urban League, United Negro College Fund, Black Womens Agenda, Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, March of Dimes Birth Defect Foundation, National Mental Health Association, Martin Luther King Jr Center for Non-Violent Social Change, and the American Association for University Women.
