Prologue.

It was a night that should've been perfect. A night which had started with such excitement, such promise, yet it all ended in tragedy. A tragedy which would haunt them all, never relenting.

They were surviving the best they could, under the circumstances. But it was painful… almost too painful to see him suffer. To watch him try to accept his fate, a fate which he did not even understand.

His whole world was crashing down around him, and he was losing hope. His physical pain, his emotional pain, it was getting worse, and there was nothing they could do about it. He was dying in front of his family's eyes, and they were powerless to stop it.

It wasn't anyone's fault, it was meant to be.
If only they could believe that…

Chapter 1 - Tears Of Wishful Wanting.

"Suddenly the sky is falling, could it be it's too late for me?" a soft voice whispered in the darkness before trailing off sadly. Zac switched on his bedside lamp, squinting in the sudden light. He looked down at his arms, and his useless legs, staring at the painful welts and bruises, still appearing from that night. He could feel the hot tears pouring out of his eyes, burning like trails of fire down his cheeks.
"Somebody save me… I don't want to be like this," he whispered.

Taylor paused outside his brother's room. More than anything, he wanted to walk in and see him, but he didn't know what to say. It was so unfair. He took a deep breath and knocked on the door.
"Zac? It's Tay, can I come in?"
There was a long pause before Zac answered. "Yes."
Taylor took another deep breath, opened the door and walked into the room. He gasped at what he saw. Zac was lying in darkness, crying softly.
"Hey, do you wanna come out and watch TV with me, or something?"
Zac shook his head.
"Come on, we'll play NBA Jams… and I'll even let you beat me," Taylor joked, hoping his brother would accept this offer.
Zac faced him and gave a small smile. Taylor smiled back.
"Not right now."
"Come on, we haven't hung out in ages!"
"I'm not ready. I'd rather be alone."
Taylor's smile faded. "So you want me to go?"
"It doesn't really matter what I want anymore."

"Should I stay?" Taylor was asking.
Zac didn't know how to answer. He loved his brother, but at the moment he resented him. Why was it that his whole family had been there that night, and they'd walked away unharmed, but he'd paid for it? He had been the one to suffer, the one to lose everything.
"Zac?"
"Just go… go play with Mack or someone, but I'm… I'm too tired right now."
Taylor sighed and headed for the door. "You know, I'm always here for you," he said, before closing the door and leaving Zac alone again.
Zac turned his head away, fresh tears following the same tracks down his face.
"Save me…" he whispered again.
