Lucky 57
Lovely Melancholy (CD, Loose Ground, 2001)
Lucky 57 is an excellent country
group made up of Boston rock veterans. Sanded-smooth vocals are
cast against a background of more heavily-textured
instrumentation. The tunes and overall performances on "Lovely
Melancholy" are country-pop, though much in the lyrics and
accompaniment would likely resonate with a rock-club audience.
The material, mostly written by Tinker Lee Taylor, is
consistently strong. Taylor's best may be "Chance Meeting" (with
the verse "You feel like for all these years/you've been
sleeping./Now you're wakin' up/with such a start/you are
shaking." Leader Kip McCloud contributed two great originals: "Done," in particular, sounds like a possible hit. And the song's one-word title captures the essence of this terrific song's country-heartache theme. --
