Heero, the show's most important character, is the ultimate mobile-suit pilot. His suit, the eyonymous Wing Gundam, was designed and built by Doctor J--no not the basketball player--and is so named because it can transform into "bird mode," allowing it to fly and even enter Earth's atmosphere from outer space. (The other Gundam suits, though capable of fighting in outer space, are not designed for winged flight, meaning they mostly battle on the ground while they're on Earth.) Heero is detached and reserved, ruthless machine who's been trained since childhood for this misson. He's not really Heero, but is instead a nameless waif who was re-named after the original Heero Yuy, a leader of the space colonies who was assassinated in AC 175.
