Summary of Joel Spring's Book on Deculturalzation and the Struggle for Equality

The Civil Rights Movement, which stretched across many cultures, was mostly led by the African Americans. Their goal was to desegregate schools and have cultural heritage taught in schools. They wanted every opportunity to better themselves and future generations.
The group that led the way for civil rights was the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). They fought to end discriminatory practice against minorities. One of their biggest wins was in 1954 when the Supreme Court decided a case (Brown vs. the Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas) where desegregation in schools was called for throughout the country.
One key leader for the civil rights movement was Martin Luther King Jr. His nonviolent form of protest was popular among many people. Teamed with Rosa Parks during the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955, they managed to gain recognition and also a supreme court decision against segregation on transportation.
Also helping the African Americans with their fight,Native Americans, Latino Americans, and Asian Americans protested against unfairness shown towards minorities. Their main goal was to fight against segregation in scools. They wanted to see their heritage and language added to curriculum. They all supported a bilingual and multicultural education. Opponents to bilingual education pushed to make English the official language of the United States. However, this was not accomplished. Some states passed legislature that made English their official language. The fight for bilingual and mulitcultural education continues in society today.
The Civil Rights Movement was and still is a very important part of the United States' culture. As long as there are people to lead the fight, civil rights will be gained for all throughout time.
