A PROJECT TO DECORATE WALLS

Inspection of the mural board March 31 2004.

(photo taken by David Mackenzie-Dewhurst)

This is the board (made up at the NHS Surrey Oaklands Craft Matters workshops) for the "mural" painting which will probably be based upon the above woodland pathway painting.

In a mural there needs to be some hidden features. These features might include; Dragon, Wyvern, Unicorn and the like for those more inqisitively interested veiwers.

There is access to a digital camera. Such equipment might make possible the creation of an animated painting lesson, as well as its progress.

Sketch May 10 2004

This 22" X 41" mural preparitory aclylic on paper sketch was made at a Longmead Art lesson in slightly less than 2 hours.

Starting to prepare the mural board May 11 2004. (photograph taken by Caroline Dent).

As with painting landscapes from real life, the preparation of the board reqiured good weather. I initially took a day off from painting to spend a couple of hours at Craft Matters.

Never having painted a mural before, I was unaware of the work neccessary, for sealing the pragmatically employed "exterior-ply" in case it ended up getting exposed to the elements. I had to abandon directly painting the bluebells in Priory Park because of this.

The nearly prepared board 19 May 2004.

This "over the top" preparation work will hopefully be the only superfluous paint applied for this project.

Special attention was paid to filling and sealing the mural board "painting surface". The board was given 2 overall transparent coats of diluted PVA. It was thought sensible to lightly sand the painting face before applying another coat of PVA.

This photo shows the subsequentley applied coats of white matt vynyl emulsion paint. In the bright sunlight a pair of welding goggles would have been usefull..

Where to put the board? 20 May 2004

This wall at the back of the Surrey Oaklands NHS trust premises at Shaws Corner in Redhill, was to be the location for the boards painting, as well as its siting.

When it was first suggested that this space needs cheering up (circa August 2000), it was to be painted directly onto the wall. I suggested the board. This was "made up" to fit between the brick pillars behind the bin. The project has seemingly gone beyond the appropriation of this space.

The ivy and the leaves are actually an ideal accompanyment for such a painting. Maybe one afternoon I could get some "cheap" coloured household emulsion, and carry out the original intention, of doing a painting, on the actuall wall!!!?

Possible location 25 May 2004

This wall at Surrey Oaklands Wingfield Centre has more than enough area for the board. Unfortunately it is down a narrow corridor. The board will stick out over an inch.

My clear plan to do a big landscape painting, would have to be turned upon its head to fit this space. As envisaged at Shaws Corner, there might have been a clear sitting down veiwpoint. Here there will only be casual sideways glances, from a changing standing up veiwpoint.

This corridor might be enhanced by the mural sketches, which are to be done on hardboard panels.

The Surrey Oaklands NHS trust have various premises. The main painting will hopefully find a home somewhere, where it can be appreciated within the intended ambience -if I get the lesson right, that is.

Mural board delivered to my garage 3 June 2004.

It was decided that the board was to painted in my garage. As can be seen there needs be a bit of re-arranging first.
