Brethren,

By the Rough Ashlar, we are reminded of our rude and imperfect state by nature; by the Perfect Ashlar, of the state of perfection at which we hope to arrive by a virtuous education, our own endeavors and the blessings of God.
Masons are unique in their commitment to a virtuous education, appreciating Masonry’s commitment to life-long learning, self-improvement and personal growth.  The tools for changing the Rough Ashlar are given to us in the lectures of the degrees, but without effort, they often lie buried in the corners of our minds and atrophy by lack of use thus negatively affecting our relationships.
My emphasis this year will be on polishing our skills in Masonry and applying our Craft, thereby helping us improve our interpersonal skills, which are important at home, in the Lodge and the community.  For many Masons, our home provides a special someone who enables us to increase our focus on our Craft while allowing us to lower the priority of other tasks in our lives.  Be mindful and thank them.  In the Lodge, take the extra effort to get to know a Brother about whom you know very little.  Be a Brother who cares, not only in thought, but also in what you say and do.  In the community, remember that you are the ambassador of Masonry.  You may be the only contact that a person has to judge the Fraternity.  Be a shining example to bring pleasure to yourself and honor to the Fraternity.
Use February’s Valentine’s Day to remind you everyday to let that special someone in your life know in thought, word and deed that they are important to you.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

David R. Leeds, Worshipful Master 2007
