| Your Comfort Zone Our Masonic Order has a system of values based upon these cornerstones: the dignity of man and the liberty of the individual; the right of all persons to worship as they choose; the formation of democratic governments; and, the importance of public education. Why should a Brother go through the effort of attending lodge? It is hoped that a Brother would come for the camaraderie, but ultimately meeting at lodge, as opposed to a public area, should affect one's dignity as a man. Many of us resist attending because it is more comfortable to remain at home. There a Brother may have almost effortless access to information and entertainment via television and the Internet. However, comfort leads to complacency. We need to be instructed to do better since most of us can do better when challenged. Discomfort heightens our sensitivity, which promotes learning. When the DDGM and the DRI came to our lodge for an Official Visit, they corrected with candor and compassion, not because they like to embarrass us, but because they believe improving the ritual enhances the dignity of the man who is exemplifying, as well as the men who are observing. Come out to your lodge. Not because I request it, but because there are enough teachings in our ritual so that you should be able to take something away to help reinforce the purpose of life and the lodge. This may be as simple as watching and enjoying the progress an officer exhibits in his station or place, or a more profound self-examination and introspection. Step out of your comfort zone and into your lodge. Put forth the effort to self-examine and promote changes within yourself. Be proud of your lodge and your dignity as a man. Remember, your presence adds a tangible dimension to the evening as you listen or interact that otherwise would have been lost on you and the rest who attended. Sincerely and Fraternally, David R.
