Ling 587 Teaching Reading in a Second Language Instructor: Dr. Paul Angelis Textbook: Grabe, W. and Stoller, F. (2002). Teaching and reseraching reading. Longman. Course Objectives (extracted from the course syllabus): The primary and continual focus of this course will be on rading. As the title indicates, our main perspective will be that of teaching. More specifically, we will consider issues associated with the teaching of reading in a second language context, primarily but not exclusively English. Because an investigation of teaching can benefit best from some review and exploration of factors underlying reading itself, we will also look into topics that touch on the reading process from both lingistic and psycological perspectives. Finally, given the importance and emphasis given to literacy in so many contexts todya, we will consider some of the many variables which affect the teaching and learning of reading sills for both children and adults, in foreign and second language settings, and examine what implications research can provide for all of these concerns. Course Assignments: 1. 3 written article reports 2. Text review 3. Take-home exam 4. Course Project (action research project/ course design project) 5. Oral presentation of the project 6. Exercises |
