THE OFFICIAL #189 NLCC  OROMOCTO NEWS LETTER

VOLUME 1, NUMBER 2
FEBRUARY 2001

FROM THE CAPTAIN’S CABIN:
( MID (NL)  AR  BERESFORD  CPSM, CD, COMMANDING OFFICER, 357-7463 )

As you can see, things are moving along rapidly. Our program is only as strong as the support we get from our parents and sponsors. Maximum participation is required to enable our Cadets to have a Summer Camp, a second New Entry intake, as well as replace uniforms in the fall for our growing cadets.
Drill Night Location: The Maritime Club has consented to our Corps continuing to use the Main Lounge as long as it is not being used. Except for the odd night this would only be a problem in December, however the RCR have also consented to the use of the training building next door with bookings done through BN Ops. It is generally available except during TQ 4 training in Jan and Feb.
Ship’s Badge:  A NLC Corp Ship’s Badge has been received from C.B. Hill in Edmonton to exchange as a Cadet project. We should be able to build a display board for our cadets’ collection.
NLCC #189 Oromocto Web Site: A web site is now in the developmental stages to better present our Corps and cause to the public. It will talk about the NLC program, include the Corps Newsletters, Training Syllabus and Schedule, Include the Naval history of New Brunswick and Bay of Fundy Region, A Knowledge test, Links to multiple learning and other Navy and Cadet oriented sites, our sponsor pages, and how to contact us. Cadets will be allowed to compete to place articles on the web site.

EXECUTIVE BRIEFS:
( CF VOL. CPL  H M  VAN DER POL , EXECUTIVE OFFICER, 357-0984)

Just a short note from the XO: First I would like to thank all the cadets for the superb effort they have shown. We are a young Corps, but already we can see that you all work hard together to make this a special Corps. Therefore I can truly say “Ready, Aye, Ready”

OPS and TRAINING:
( A/SLT (NL)  RJ  HANSEN, TRAINING OFFICER, 357-6422 )

NB Division Adventure Training Weekend: We have been invited on an adventure training weekend with NLCC Marco Polo from Quispamsis on April 20-22 weekend at camp Holderville on the Kingston Peninsula. It will be held in a scout camp by a lake. It has 1 main kitchen building and 2 out buildings. As it stands now some money will be required to purchase rations but transport should be arranged through our parents group. We would require approximately 6 mini vans.
Training Videos: 11 videos have been received on permanent loan from L.M/ Media Marketing services in Markham Ontario. They deal with the Canadian Navy from past to present. It includes ship building in St. John, The Rescue Co-ordination Center, the submarine service, historic ships, and the Canadian Navy in the Gulf War. These were free of charge and will be used to augment our Ceremonial Divisions training nights at the beginning of each month. Cpl McNee of 2 RCR has graciously agreed to act as a projectionist for us to operate the Big Screen TV on Ceremonial Division nights at the Maritime Club. All parents and Navy League Members are welcome.
Summer Training: Plans are in the works to organize a summer camp involving the Cadet Corps in Quispamsis and Charlottetown. If all goes to plan it will involve a loupe through NB and NS with stops at the St. John Shipyard, Cornwallis, HMCS Fraser in Bridgewater, Lunenburg, HMCS Sackville and Museum, HMC Dockyard and Museum, a patrol frigate and submarine visit, CFB Shearwater and The Rescue Co-ord Center Dartmouth. Cadets would stay with host corps locations at most places. The Cadets would be qualified as Boatswains at the end of this training.
Air Rifles: The corps now has access to two Range Safety Officers, one is a Master Sniper instructor. Facilities to fire have been found at the Lindsay Valley Biathlon range as it is condemned for all powder firing. A marksman course outline has been downloaded from Magnificent Squadron in Ontario. It may be viewed on request. RCSCC Nipigon has consented to a loan of their air rifles for training.
Able Cadet Exams: These will be held in early April for their first chevron. We are following the same training schedule as the Corps out west. A study guide is in the works for the cadets.

No.1 NAVAL STORES:
( CIC LT(N) DA STAPLEFORD, STORES O, 450-6122 )

Uniforms: The first request for 30 uniforms was submitted early in January at a combined cost of roughly $3600. The National Contractor was changed as of 1 Jan 2001. There is now a new order form with new prices. A rebate cheque of $293.19 was received for deposit to the branch. Uniforms should be in before the end of Feb. A proposal was granted to finish outfitting the two NL warranted officers, and enroll the two cadets waiting to join. This will cost $ 150.00 for the officers and $240.00 for the cadets.
Scran Locker: The Cadets have requested a canteen for buying pop and chips during Stand Easy. After discussions with the Maritime Club President we will be allowed to operate one in the building as long as we only sell to Cadets, Staff, and Corps Visitors on regular training nights. A location will be found in the old cloakroom for a storage locker. Proceeds from this will be used to defray the costs of Cadet Party Functions or Fun Nights. To enhance their fund it was suggested that a weekly cash recyclable collection could take place and a treat be given to the Watch that brings in the most that week. Loose nickels could be brought in lieu of recyclables if the cadets cash them in first.

SPORTS TABLOID:
( CI JA HILLS, SPORTS O, 357-0003)

BASE FITNESS CENTER: An e-mail was sent to Neil Mackenzie at the Base Fitness Center. Rules that govern our Corps are that as we are not a DND entity and therefore cannot use the Gym free of charge. However we have an agreement in principal that we most likely will be allowed to use the Gym the last Thursday of the month in exchange for a Spring Cleanup of the Gym grounds or selected equipment, recognizing that this is a young group. We may also be called upon to provide colour guards to special sports meets. I think this could give our cadets some positive public exposure.

SPONSORS and PATRONS:
( OROMOCTO BRANCH, NAVY LEAGUE of CANADA PRESIDENT E MURDOCK, 458-9692)

Fund raising; The Oromocto Community 2000 Lions Club is willing to host an Annual Bingo for the Corps. The first is to be held on 17 Feb 2001 at RCL BR 93.Tickets will be sold in advance at the Oromocto Mall the previous 3 weekends starting 1 Feb 2001. Tickets will be $20 advanced or $25 at the door. It is anticipated that over 500 dollars will be raised on the Corps behalf. It has been suggested that the corps could put together a recipe book to sell for additional funds.
Annual Review Trophies and Awards: The Maritime Club has offered to sponsor an annual trophy promoting good comradeship. This would be called the Maritime Club Bon Ami Award and would be voted on by the cadets themselves. The Lion’s Club has also expressed interest in a community service award, and the RCMP have done the same for a proficiency award. We will be approaching the Navy Vets for a seamanship award at their quarterly meeting March 4th. The CO has been invited as their guest speaker.
