VIEW FROM THE CROWSNEST THE OFFICIAL #189 NLCC OROMOCTO NEWS LETTER VOLUME 1, NUMBER 4 APRIL 2001 FROM THE CAPTAIN’S CABIN: ( MID (NL) AR BERESFORD CPSM, CD, COMMANDING OFFICER, 357-7463 ) Another month flies by and all is moving along splendidly. The cadets received their uniforms after a long wait and now we have what looks like a cadet corps. We have received many words of praise for the officers and cadets for their hard work. I will share some of it with you: > Jerrod Riley, National Office Coordinator, The Navy League of Canada, writes “I just finished reading the two newsletters for your corps and wanted to take a moment to commend you and your corps (staff and cadets) for the terrific work evident in your report. I know how much work it can be to start a new corps, as I served in the new RCSCC Centurion for 4 years. It is certainly a challenge, but a very rewarding one! I place a tremendous value on the benefits of cadet training. I believe that opening a new corps is wonderful gift to the community, one that will benefit local youth now and for years to come. Please pass my sincere thanks to your staff and your branch for their efforts”. > Glen Stewart, President, New Brunswick Division, Navy League of Canada, writes “Another excellent issue of your newsletter. You certainly have assembled a terrific crew to assist you with the Corps. Well Done. I would like to pay a visit to your Corps at some time that would be convenient to you and your crew. Let me know if this is possible. I am forwarding a copy of your newsletter to all N/L Branches and Corps in the Province. (There is) an application to form another new N/L Cadet Corps in Fredericton - following a canvass of all Navy League Executive member we have decided on the name NLCC Carleton for this new Corps (if it is available). The name is very prominent in the Fredericton Area and the Corps will be using the Carleton Street Armories as their training base - this is also used by RCSCC Fredericton. With the addition of the new Corps in Oromocto, now another one in Fredericton, our current Corps in Quispamsis will have some competition to look forward to. > Clifford Kennedy, National Council, Vice President and Chairperson of Fund Development, writes “I am absolutely impressed by the quality of work being done by the Officer cadre, the Volunteers, and most importantly the NL Cadets. They have come so far in such a short period of time. Congratulations are definitely in order to the CO and his ship's crew. The division of responsibility is clear, and their enthusiasm abounds. They are resourceful and dedicated to the task at hand. (They are) an example for most Corps (NL or Sea Cadets). Bravo Zulu to Mid (NL) AR Beresford CPSM, CD for his dedication, commitment and leadership; and that of the entire organization of NLCC Oromocto. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to meet the ship's company. I would be honored to attend one of your evening training sessions. It is refreshing to see the enthusiasm displayed by your unit.” > Tim Porter writes “I feel that it is a privilege to be party to the newsletters of this organization. The trials and tribulations they are going through remind me of my early days establishing my Corps in Cornwall, Ontario. We did everything including muster on Saturday mornings to swab down the drill deck. There were all kinds of highs and lows-Oromocto is seeing them too-- I wish them well. Our Communications Manager is in touch with the CO so we'll hear her plan for Oromocto and At The Helm coverage, soonest.” It is the hard work and dedication of the entire ship's company that has brought us along so well. The staff is experienced in their own fields, and the cadets are extremely keen. Luckily our Navy League branch also has experienced staff from other organizations and we have experienced strong support from the community. This only the beginning of a two year plan to have this corps developed enough to begin Squadron level competitions with the other corps in the region. Just remember the Town of Oromocto motto “ Effort Brings Success”. EXECUTIVE BRIEFS: ( CF VOL. CPL H M VAN DER POL , EXECUTIVE OFFICER, 357-0984) Discipline: All cadets are to be reminded that it is an offence under the charter of rights to harass or assault another person. This includes name calling, teasing, unwanted touching, hitting and shoving. There is a zero tolerance policy in place. This corps will use the “three strikes and your out” method depending on the severity of the offence. Lower deck justice will not be condoned. All offences are to be reported through the proper chain of command. OPS and TRAINING: (A/SLT (NL) RJ HANSEN, TRAINING OFFICER, 357-6422 ) Make and Mends Weekend: This weekend was very successful. We were able to bring the costs down thanks to the generous donations of Eastern Bakeries in Fredericton, Tim Horton’s Oromocto, 2RCR and to the generosity of the Maritime Club and its Committee members. We will probably try to have another onboard weekend near the Annual Cadet Review in June. The overnight training will most likely be around the Cadets Caring For Canada weekend of June the 9th. The Annual Review is tentatively scheduled for the June 23rd weekend. Ordinary Cadet Exams: All cadets who wrote the exam have passed. It was a very good showing considering the small amount of time some of the cadets have been in the Corps. Able Cadet Exams: These will be held in April for their first chevron (stripe). A study guide is in the works for the cadets. This exam will involve more rope work and drill. Fundy Squadron Adventure Training Weekend: We have been invited on an adventure training weekend with #170 NLCC R.C. Cromwell from Quispamsis on April 20-22 weekend at camp Holderville on the Kingston Peninsula. It will be held in a scout camp on the Long Reach of the St John River. It has 1 main kitchen building and 2 out buildings. Transport will be arranged through our parents group. We would require approximately 6 mini vans and a truck. 5 volunteers have come forward so far! A meeting will be held in the second week of April in order to organize our transport fleet. OP Orders will be issued at that time. Battle of Atlantic Parade St. John: We will be arranging to participate in the St. John observances of Battle of Atlantic Sunday, the first Sunday in May, along with our sister corps RCSCC Nipigon. The Battle of the Atlantic is the longest continuous battle of the Second World War. During this battle Canada contributed over 375 Warships and 110,000 members. Ship losses were as close as the Bay of Fundy and the Gulf of St Lawrence. We will be requiring the use of multiple Mini vans in order to allow everyone to participate. More to Follow SHIPS’ WRITER: ( CI DA ALLEN, ADMIN O , 472-1150 ) Drill Night Location: Our new Ship’s Office is located in the cloak room of the Maritime Club. This will give us the room to store routine administrative and training aids and help us become better organized. No cadets are to enter without permission. Enrolment: Since last meeting we have lost one Cadet, enrolled one replacement. The officer cadre has one male NB DIV warranted officer, one female AB DIV warranted officer, three male Regular Force volunteers, one female CIC (Sea) officer volunteer, two female civilian instructors, one male civilian instructor and one female Army Cadet volunteer sail instructor. E-MAIL, PO BOX MAIL, and CORPS PHONE NUMBER: The Corps’ official E-Mail address is: nlccoromocto@webmail.navyleague.ca . This is at no cost to the corps. The official PO Box address is: Commanding Officer, #189 NLCC OROMOCTO, CFB/ASU GAGETOWN, PO BOX 17000 STN FORCES, OROMOCTO NB, E2V 4J5. This is at no cost to the Corps. The official contact number for the Corps is 1-877-263-6320. This costs 15 cents a minute and is being paid for by the CO. This number can be transferred to another phone on the occasion of a change of command. Cadets and parents are requested to follow normal chain of command and use domestic phone lines. #189 NLCC Oromocto Web Site: A web site is now in the developmental stages to better present our Corps and cause to the public. It will talk about the NLC program, include the Corps Newsletters, Training Syllabus and Schedule, Include the Naval history of New Brunswick and Bay of Fundy Region, A Knowledge test, Links to multiple learning and other Navy and Cadet oriented sites, our sponsor pages, and how to contact us. Cadets will be allowed to compete to place articles on the web site. We are expecting to officially launch it the Battle of Atlantic weekend 6 May 2001 but we need some feedback as I develop it. The site is at http://www.oocities.org/nlccoromocto/index.html No.1 NAVAL STORES: ( CIC LT(N) DA STAPLEFORD, STORES O, 450-6122 ) Uniforms: The initial order is in. All in all, a good fit. Please bear with us as we sort out a few sizing problems. Extra small boots are available through Family Outfitters off the Hanwell Road across from Burden Auctioneers in Fredericton. While they are not original issue, they look very close, and cost approximately $30 a pair. Boots are not required until the Battle of Atlantic Parade. We have received an anonymous donation of 70 extra small green t-shirts, and an additional donation of 35 extra small gray PT shorts from Pro-Am Outfitters on Hanwell Road. These will be issued to those cadets who fit them. It will be a one time issue and will not be recalled on your cadets leaving the corps as they are next to skin items. Scran Locker: The Cadets have requested a canteen for buying pop and chips during Stand Easy. After discussions with the Maritime Club President we will be allowed to operate one in the building as long as we only sell to Cadets, Staff, and Corps Visitors on regular training nights. A location has been found in the old cloakroom for a storage locker. Proceeds from this will be used to defray the costs of Cadet Party Functions or Fun Nights. To enhance their fund it was suggested that a weekly cash recyclable collection could take place and a treat be given to the Watch that brings in the most that week. Loose nickels could be brought in lieu of recyclables if the cadets cash them in first. To date in three weeks it has already raised over $250 thanks largely to the generous contributions of many area businesses and individuals. A list will be published next month. Current Navy Badge Board: We have received an anonymous donation of most of the Navy’s current rank and trade badges. They will be assembled for display and as use as a training aid. SPORTS TABLOID: ( CI JA HILLS, SPORTS O, 357-0003) SPONSORS and PATRONS: ( OROMOCTO BRANCH, NAVY LEAGUE of CANADA PRESIDENT E MURDOCK, 458-9692) Fund raising: Chocolate bar sales for the Oromocto Navy League Branch Fund have been very successful with our corps alone raising $640. Another batch is in the works. Tickets are on sale now at the Oromocto Mall for an Easter Basket. It has been suggested that the corps could put together a recipe book to sell for additional funds and the Atlantic Lottery Corporation has offered a prize package that may be of use for a silent auction. Another Tag Day will most likely be held in the late spring this year in order to ease start up costs. All cadets are expected to participate where possible. Please send any suggestions in with your cadet, or better yet attend a Navy League meeting the last Tuesday of the month at the Oromocto Legion on Restigouche Road. Meetings are held in the Downstairs lounge commencing at 6:30 PM. All adults are welcome. |
