CHAPTER 11

The next morning Alexis rolls over to find Sonny still lying next to her.

“Well good morning sunshine.” He said as he leans over and kisses her.

“Last night was amazing.” She replied as she looked away.

Sonny brought her eyes to his. “Are you sorry it happened?”

She half-heartedly smiled. “No ofcourse not, I’m sorry if I made you feel that way” she said as she reached out an touched his face.

“Then do you want to tell me what’s on your mind?”

She kissed him on the cheek and slowly got out of bed. She put on her robe and walked into the bathroom and turned on the shower. “I’ve just got a real busy day ahead of me and would rather climb back into bed and stay there.” She replied as she walked over to her closet and gathered her clothes for the day.

“So why don’t you.”

“Because I can’t.”

Sonny looked up at her and even though she didn’t say it, he could tell she was thinking about Ned. He got out of bed and began to get dressed. “Yeah, I know what you mean. I have three meetings in a row later on today and really can’t afford to miss them.”

“So I’ll catch up with you later?” She said as she walked into the bathroom.

“I’ll let myself out.” He replied as she smiled at him and then shut the door.

Sonny looked over at the bathroom door for a moment before picking up the rest of his clothes. He sat down on the edge of her bed and listened to the running water. He couldn’t tell if she was crying or not so he got up and placed his head against the door. He still couldn’t tell for sure over the running water but decided either way it would just be better if he left.

Two hours later Ned Ashton unlocked the door to his hotel suite at the Port Charles Hotel. “Oh it’s so good to be home.” He yelled out loud as the bellboy brought in his bags. “Just put them anywhere.” He told him before giving him a generous tip. The kid left and Ned walked over to the bar and picked up the phone.

First he dialed the florist and had them immediately send a dozen red roses to Alexis Davis. Then he picked up the phone and dialed her number. As the lines began to connect and her phone rang he pulled her ring out of his pocket.

Alexis walked down the stairs of her Penthouse as the phone began to ring. Not sure if it was Sonny, Ned, or anyone else she really couldn’t talk to at the moment, she opted not to answer it. Instead she just stood there and waited for the caller to leave a message.

Ned continued to look at the diamond ring he held in his hand, he couldn’t help but smile. He knew the only true thing that would make him happy is seeing it back on her finger where it should have never left. His smiled faded quicker than it had appeared as her machine picked up. He listened to the entire message and sighed before finally hanging up the phone.

Alexis closed her eyes and listened to the buzzing sound on her machine as the person on the other end hung up. She sat down in the chair by her desk and started going through some files. She dropped the files and looked back at the phone. She sat back in her chair and couldn’t help from having the feeling that the caller who hung up was Ned.

Ned walked over to the bar and poured himself a drink before sitting down on the couch and pulling out his cell phone. He thought for a moment before finally getting up the courage to try her cell phone.

Alexis walked over to the fireplace and stared at a picture of her and Ned on the mantle. She was so lost in her thoughts that the ringing of her cell phone startled her. She quickly looked around for her phone but couldn’t find it.

Ned just sat there listening to the phone ring as he thought about what he was going to tell her. He question not leaving a message the ten thousand times he called and the fact that every time he wrote her a love letter he stuck it back in the draw never mailing it.

Alexis was relived when she finally found her phone. She quickly picked it up and answered it. “Hello.” She said as the line went dead.

Ned threw his phone across the room and placed the ring back in his pocket. “Where the hell are you Alexis?” He asked himself as he picked up his keys and headed out the door.

“That’s just great.” Alexis replied as she tossed her phone on the couch. She walked back over to her desk and tried to get some work done.

Ned opened the door to his car and got behind the wheel. He slowly placed the key in the ignition and drove away.

After several minutes of accomplishing nothing, Alexis got frustrated and threw the papers to the floor, crashing her head into the desk.

Ned was about to step on the elevator as he ran into the delivery boy. He took the flowers from him and handed him a tip. He then stepped onto the elevator and headed upstairs. He continued to repeat what he was going to say to her over and over again in his mind. The elevator doors opened and he stood outside her door.

Alexis just sat there crying.....crying for herself......crying for hurting Ned......crying for using Sonny they way she did.......and mostly crying because she just couldn’t stop.

Ned raised his hand and finally lightly knocked on the door…almost as if he didn’t want her to answer. He almost got his wish as Alexis sat back in her chair and wiped her eyes hearing the faint knock on the door. She stood up and took a deep breath and tried to regain her composure as she opened the door.

Ned smiled at her and handed her the flowers. She couldn’t believe it was really him as she took them from him. He didn’t say a word as he walked past her. She closed the door and leaned against it as he spun around and took in her beauty.

They just stood there face to face and looked at one another. Neither spoke a word. Suddenly the speech that he rehashed over and over again in his mind disappeared.

Alexis walked over to the coffee table to place the flowers on it. She broke the silence as she began to speak in a very low tone. “The flowers are lovely, thank you.”

“It was the closest thing I could find that was as beautiful as you.”

Alexis took her eyes off the flowers and turned her attention to him. “Ned I don’t know what I’m supposed to say or do.”

“Neither do I.” he replied as he took her hand and they sat on the couch. “All I do know is I love you and I’ve missed you something awful this past month and a half.”

Alexis began to fidget with her hair. “ I know I said some terrible things and for that you’ll never know how sorry I am.”

“We both said things we didn’t mean.”

Ned took both of his hands and placed them on the sides of her face. She looked deep into his eyes as he spoke.” Alexis I need to hear you tell me you love me.”

Alexis’ eyes began to water, as she thought about how different her life would have been without him. She loved him with all her heart but she was so confused and didn’t know what to say.

As Ned eyes followed suit and began to water as well, he asked her the one question he so desperately needed to know the answer to. “Alexis, sweetheart do you still love me?”

Seeing the pain in his eyes that she caused, she couldn’t remain quiet any longer. “I’ve never stopped loving you.”

Ned quickly pulled her into a deep passionate wholehearted kiss. She wrapped her hands around his neck as he began to unbutton her blouse. As his hands made their way up her side and towards her chest she broke the kiss and pulled away. Ned was a bit taken back by her reaction.

“I’m sorry Ned but too much has happened to just go back to the way things were. I need time to figure out what’s going on.” She replied as she stood up.

Ned got up and placed his arms around her waist. ‘Time sweetheart has only keep us apart, not drawn us closer.” He kissed the side of her face. “More time at this point I think will only hurt our relationship more.”

“Ned you don’t understand, I’ve done things that I can’t take back. Things that I’m not sure if I.......”

Ned couldn’t help himself, as he looked her in the eyes. He brought his mouth to hers and cut her off as their lips crashed together. He slammed her body into his and held her tight as they continued to kiss. She held her arms out to the side of him refusing to give in. He lowered his lips to her neck and began biting the one place he knew always drove her crazy. She closed her eyes and moaned as several thoughts raced through her mind. He breathed heavily into her ear and whispered ’I love you.’ before he began to nibble on it.

She wanted him so much and needed him even more. While he drove her crazy along her neckline and up to her ear with his tongue, his hands began unbuttoning the remainder of buttons on her blouse. She couldn’t take it anymore as his kisses started to move lower. She grabbed his head with her one hand and pulled on his hair as she unbuckled his pants with her other hand.

Ned once again brought his lips to hers as their tongues collided. They quickly ripped the clothing from each others’ body like two animals in heat. Their bodies were sweating with pure desire as he threw her back onto the coach and slipped inside. They continued to make love to one another as their hearts and souls reconnected...both lost in each other, without a care in the world.

After they made love, Ned pulled the throw blanket over them and they laid there in silence...neither knowing what to say, or just how to say it. They both knew things were different and that a lot needed to happen before they could take the next step, but at that moment, all they cared about was holding on to one another until the outside world wouldn’t allow them to do so.

Chapter 12

Several hours later Ned woke up wrapped in a sheet. He looked around the room for Alexis before getting up and throwing on his boxers. “Alexis sweetheart where are you?” He called out as he went up the stairs. After he searched her bedroom and saw no sign of her he went back down stairs and continued to get dressed. He looked around for a note but found nothing. “That’s odd.” He said to himself as he made his way into the kitchen. ‘She made coffee but didn’t leave a note.’ He laughed to himself. He went over and poured himself a cup as he dialed her cell phone. ‘Hey sweetheart it’s me, where are you? I missed waking up and not having you in my arms. Call me as soon as you get this message.’ He replied to her answering service.

“Yes this should do.” Sonny said as he grab a bottle of Champagne and headed out the door.

He walked across the hall and was just about to knock when the door opened.

“She’s not here.” Ned coldly remarked.

“Well, where is she?”

“I don’t know, why?” Ned yelled. “And what’s with the bottle?”

Sonny looked down at the bottle. “I was just coming to see if Alexis wanted to celebrate with me.”

“Celebrate what?” He said as he closed the door. “Oh let me guess, she got you off on yet another charge?”

“Something like that.” Sonny smirked back.

“Well it’s kinda hard to celebrate with someone who’s not here.” Ned yelled as he stepped onto the elevator.

Sonny waited for the doors to close and then motioned for Johnny. “Go find Ms. Davis and make sure she’s okay.”

“Do you want me to call you when I find her?”

“Yeah, but don’t let her see you.”

“No problem.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

As Alexis walked through the park the sun began to quickly fade and the darkness came to light. She didn’t know what the hell she was doing out there or why she wasn’t smart enough to grab her coat before she left. As she stood there with her arms wrapped tightly around her body, she heard someone approach her from behind. She quickly turned around and slightly laughed.

“Out lurking so late at night.”

“I could ask the same of you Natasha.” Helena replied.

Alexis put up her hand and swung it. “Well why don’t you just lurk......right on by.”

“You know my darling, it isn’t safe for you to be out at night all alone.”

Alexis just looked at her and then took a seat on the bench behind her. “You know, I’m really not in the mood for your crap tonight.”

“You know your poor brother got careless and look where he ended up.” Alexis looked up at her. “You don’t really want to join him and your mother do you.”

“What on your list of people you murdered yourself?” Alexis shot back.

“Oh, are we still singing that same old song?” Helena asked as she sat down next to her. “It really is getting kinda old.”

“I know you murdered my brother Helena and you will pay for it!”

Helena laughed. “You know Alexis you really shouldn’t be to sure of yourself.” She got up and wiped her fingers across Alexis’ face. “It tends to make one look weak.”

Helena continued to laugh as she walked off. Alexis just closed her eyes and threw her head back. She sat there for a moment in utter silence until a noise in the bushes made her look up.

Johnny pulled out his cell phone and called Sonny. “I found her.”

“Where is she?”

“She’s sitting on a bench in the park.”

“Is she alone?”

“Yes.”

“Is she okay?”

“Appears to be.”

“Okay thanks Johnny, keep an eye on her and don’t let her see you.”

“Don’t worry Sonny, Ms. Davis won’t know I’m following her.” He replied as he hung up the phone.

“You know if you don’t want people to know you’re following them.” Johnny jumped at the sound of her voice. “Then you really should learn to be more careful.”

“Ms. Davis, it’s nice to see you....” He trailed off as she cut him off.

“Save it Johnny.”

“Mr. Corinthos was just worried about you that’s all.”

“So he sent you to spy on me?” She asked playing mad.

“It’s not like that.” He replied as he took off his coat and placed it over her shoulders.

“Well I guess I could think of worse people to have following me.” She laughed. “Well as long as you’re here, why not take me home?”

“Certainly.” He replied as they walked towards the car.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Back at Sonny’ Penthouse he was on the phone when Johnny and Alexis came walking in.

“You know I have this bad habit of knowing when people are following me.” Alexis said as she looked Sonny in the eyes.

“Hey Benny I have to go, but get back to me as soon as possible.” He hung up the phone and then looked at Johnny.

“Don’t blame him.” Alexis stated clearly. “You get use to hearing strange things when you live the life of a Cassadine.”

Sonny walked over to Alexis and took her hand. Johnny left as they walked over to the couch and sat down. “I was just worried about you.”

“Why?”

“I went over to see you earlier this evening and I ran into Ned. He told me you weren’t home.”

Alexis looked away from him. “Is he still across the hall?”

“No he left.”

Alexis got up and started to walk away. “You know I really should let you get back to work.”

Sonny jumped up. “Have you eaten?”

“I don’t actually recall eating anything today.”

Sonny took her hand and led her into the kitchen. “See now that just won’t do.” He lifted a cover off a dish. “Smell this.”

Alexis gave him a strange look before taking in the smell. “Wow that smells good.”

“Great, then I’ll make you a plate.” He replied as he got two dishes down from the cupboard.

“Did you make this yourself?” Alexis asked as Sonny made them both a plate.

“Yeah.” Sonny smiled at her. “It’s a small hidden talent of mine that very few people know about me.”

Alexis took one of the plates from Sonny and they walked into the other room. “I for one can’t even boil water.”

“I’d love to teach you how.”

“Trust me Sonny when it comes to cooking I’m a lost cause.”

“I wouldn’t say that.” He smiled at her. “It seems to me that you do everything you put your mind to extremely well.”

Alexis looked up at him and bite her bottom lip. “This is really good, thank you.”

“Anytime you want a home cooked meal just let me know.”

“I’ll keep that in mind.”

“Maybe the next meal we can make together.”

“And then you expect us to eat it?” She shot back.

Sonny laughed. “Even if it did turn out inedible, I’d have a lot of fun making it.” He replied as he flashed his dimples.

They finished eating and walked over to the couch.

“Dinner really was great Sonny.”

“You know the best part of it?” he asked as he moved his body closer to hers.

“That you cooked it and I didn’t?” She laughed.

Sonny looked her in the eyes. “That I got to eat it with you.” He softly replied as he brought his lips to hers.

Alexis smiled at him before his mouth overtook hers. Alexis broke the kiss and laid her head against his chest. “Sonny I’m sorry I can’t.”

Sonny placed his arm around her and ran his fingers through her hair. “Alexis?”

“Yeah?”

“Now that Ned’s back.....”

She cut him off. “I don’t want to talk about Ned.” He looked down at her and she looked up. “Not tonight.”

“Okay.” Was all he said as they just sat there holding one another, for a little while longer.

“Alexis?”

“Yeah?”

“Do you want to stay here tonight?” he asked as he held her in his arms.

Alexis sat up. “I can’t Sonny. In fact, I really should be going.”

“Ok, I can just tell something is on your mind and I wasn’t sure if you wanted to be alone tonight or not.”

Alexis grabbed his hand and held it in both of hers. “I have to go.” She brought his hand up to her lips and gently kissed the top of his hand. She turned around and headed for the door. Sonny didn’t say anything, he just watched her go. As she opened the door, she turned around to look at him, smiled, and left. She walked into her penthouse, shut the door and leaned her back against it. She looked around the room as if she was seeing it for the first time…taking in every detail, when these words came to her in almost a whisper “I’ve never been as happy as I’ve been since the day you moved in, and THAT is when I feel in love with you.”

Chapter 13

Alexis tried to sleep but couldn’t. Thoughts of both Ned and Sonny and the pain she was going to end up putting them both through kept running through her head. She looked over at the clock which displayed 12:15am. She sat up, reached for the phone, and dialed his number.

“Yeah?”

“Hey, were you sleeping?”

“No, I can’t sleep.”

“Me either. Sonny?”

“Yeah?”

“I really need to talk to you, do you think you can come over, or you know…it could really wait until tomorrow.”

“No Alexis, I’ll be there in a minute.”

“Ok. Why don’t you just use your key. I’m upstairs and really don’t feel like getting up.”

“I can do that, just give me a minute.”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

A few minutes later, Sonny walked up the stairs in her penthouse and stood in her bedroom doorway. He watched her as she sat there reading a file and thought about how much more complete and meaningful his life had become from the moment she moved in.

“May I come in?”

“How long have you been here? I didn’t hear you come in.”

Sonny walked into her room towards her bed. “I just got here.”

Alexis motioned for him to sit down on the bed, and as he did he muttered “This is a goodbye isn’t it?”

Alexis could feel a lump building up in her throat. She looked down to avoid making contact with his eyes. “Not exactly.”

Sonny got up and walked over to the window. He gazed out into the night. “You are going back to him aren’t you?”

“I love him Sonny” she said as her eyes began to fill with tears.

He continued to gaze out of the window as the words she had just spoke played over and over in his head. Everything inside of him was numb and he fought the tears that were building up inside of him. A single tear fell down his face and he couldn’t look at her…he didn’t want her to know that his heart was breaking.

“Look at me Sonny” she said as her tears began to stream down her face.

“What do you want me to say, Alexis? I’ve known from the beginning that you loved him and would continue to love him. This isn’t news to me.”

“I just can’t do this anymore…I can’t live here anymore…it’s not fair to either of you.”

Sonny immediately turned around. “What? You’re moving out of here?” he asked in an angry tone.

“This isn’t easy for me Sonny but it’s something I have to do. I can’t try to put my relationship with Ned back together living here, and I don’t want to put you through the pain of having to watch me do it.”

Sonny turned back towards the window. He didn’t know what to say to her. He desperately wanted to reach out to her and tell her what she had come to mean to him, but he couldn’t. He knew he had to give her the opportunity to see if her happiness was still with Ned. It took everything he had in him not to breakdown over the reality that he may lose the woman who completes him. “So when do you leave?”

“Well, Jax and Chloe are going to Milan for a few months and he said I could stay at his penthouse until I found another place.”

“Just let me know when and I’ll get Johnny and the boys to help you move your things.”

Alexis just sat there. She didn’t realize it would be so hard, but she needed to be honest with him. She looked over at him as he stared out the window and she called out his name.

“Yea” he said without turning around.

“I fell in love you…but I love Ned…he and I have gone through too much for me to just walk away from that love.” she said as she couldn’t stop the tears from flowing out her eyes.

Without saying a word, he turned around to leave. The pain was too much for him to bear. He longed for her to say those words to him, but always thought it would be under different circumstances. As he got to the door, he turned and looked at her “I will hold those words you just said to me, right here…forever.” He said as he patted him heart and walked out the door.

Alexis continued to lay on her bed crying. “This isn’t what I want…I didn’t want it to end up this way, but Ned threw away the key to my heart and until he gives it back, it’s not mine to give again!”

Sonny walked into his penthouse and shut the door behind him. He walked over to the table, picked up a vase and threw it against the wall. He put his head down on the desk and let his emotions take over. His tears weren’t only for him they were for her…he wept over the pain of not being able to see her everyday, for the pain of losing the one thing that was good in his life, over the thought of never being able to touch her again or being touched by her, for the pain he knew she felt over loving two men, over the pain he knew she would feel when she had to tell Ned, but mostly, he wept because she said she loved him and now that he had finally found love, he had lost love.
