Nicole Luiken grew up in a small farming community called Hawk Hills (latitude 57 °N) in northern Alberta, Canada.  She always had a great imagination and began writing at a very early age, finishing her first novel at age thirteen (it was summer holidays and there was nothing else to do).  With encouragement from her family, friends and teachers, Nicole began submitting her manuscripts to publishers.  By the time she had graduated from high school she had published three young adult novels:  Unlocking the Doors (1988), Escape to the Overworld (1988)  and The Catalyst (1989).

After high school, Nicole obtained a library technician diploma and worked in libraries for several years to support her writing habit.   All of her hard work eventually paid off and Nicole is now able to write full-time at home.  She lives in Edmonton, Alberta with her husband, Aaron, and three young children, Simon, Luke and Jinian.  It is physically impossible for her to go without writing for more than three days in a row.
