** Yamato Nadeshiko - Ideal Japanese Women **

In the increasingly materialistic world we live in today, it's no surprise that many of us think that money is the most important, and get ourselves caught up in the money chasing race. Can money really buy us happiness? Is there something more important which money cannot buy? Yamato-Nadeshiko starring Nanako Matsushima is the new comedy drama from Fuji TV which attempts to address these questions.

Nanako Matsushima is Sakurako who resents poverty because she grew up from a poor family. She vowed to become rich in life, and uses her only asset - her beauty - to achieve that aim. Soon after graduating from high school, she left home for Tokyo to become a flight stewardess. To her, that was the easiest way to meet rich men and she was relentless in her quest. A regular at matchmaking parties, she's an expert in sniffing out wealthy men by checking out the watches they wear, clothes they put on and car keys they carry. With her good looks and charming manners, she soon gain a rich following of admirers. Even though she already has a fiancé, she would not missed any opportunities of meeting wealthy men in case a richer one came along.

It was at one of the matchmaking parties where Sakurako met Ohsuke (Shinichi Tsutsumi), a poor owner of a fish shop. Sakurako initially mistook Ohsuke for a rich man while the latter was smittened with her because she resembles his ex-girlfriend who left him when he was studying Mathematics at the Massachusettes Institute of Technology. Although Sakurako felt very comfortable with Ohsuke, she dumped him as soon as she realized that he is poor. To her, Ohsuke had no future because he gave up his studies when his father died to run the fish shop with his mother. She refused to believe in the budding romance and continued in her pursuit for rich men. However, a few incidents brought them together again and Sakurako began to realize that Ohsuke is perhaps able to provide her something which money cannot buy. So what is it that Ohsuke has which money cannot buy? Will Sakurako realize her life-long dream of marrying into a rich family? Or will she choose to be with Ohsuke and remain poor?

Yamato-Nadeshiko in Japan means "an ideal Japanese woman". While Sakurako appears to be materialistic, one must admire her for her steadfast attitude towards achieving her goal. This is in contrast with Ohsuke who is constantly escaping from his problems and societal pressures.

Watch this drama if you haven't. You will be inspired. Nanako Matsushima is very convincing as the materialistic Sakurako and the theme song "Everything" by Misia is simply beautiful.
