| Southern Front (Egypt):
Israel's ground forces now began a massive attack on the Egyptian forces in Sinai. 3 Israeli divisions stood face to face with 7 Egyptian divisions. The Israeli 84th division, led by the now legendary General Israel Tal, hit the Egyptian defenses in the Gaza strip shortly after the first wave of Aircraft reported success. The Israeli tanks bashed their way in, crushing the Egyptian 7th division and driving into Sinai. The 38th division, led by Ariel Sharon, drove into the central part of the Egyptian lines, taking Abu-Ageila and Aum-Katef. The 31st Reserve division, led by Albert Mandler, drove a wedge into the Egyptian lines between Sharon's and Tal's Divisions, preventing the Egyptians from moving troops away from the central sector to assist the Arabs in Gaza. The 31st was also to prepare for surrounding the Egyptians and functioning as an "anvil" for the advancing 84th and 38th. By the next day (6th of June) the Israeli forces were deep into Sinai. The Egyptians were on the run, taking casualties from air raids. The forces drove on. On the 7th the Israeli Navy took the town of Sharem Al-Shiek. The next day the Island of Tiran was taken. This meant that the Red-Sea was completely in Israeli hands. On the 8th the Israeli tanks were parked on the bank of the Suez Cannel. The Egyptians were utterly defeated. Eastern Front (Jordan): As the Israeli armor broke into Sinai on the south, Egypt was misleading the Jordanians. The king of Jordan, Hussein, was told by the Egyptians that they destroyed the Israeli Air Force and that the Egyptian army is on the offensive. Shortly after, the Jordanians started a massive bombardment of Jerusalem and other towns. The Jordanian and Iraqi air forces attacked together. Israel had no original plans to attack Jordan. But since the Jordanians attacked first, the third wave of air attacks (that was meant for Egypt) was thrown at the Jordanians and Iraqis. Israeli paratroopers and tanks took the areas around Jerusalem that very day. Armor also poured into the northern part of the west-bank. On the 7th the paratroopers took the ancient city of Jerusalem, along with the Temple Mount, the most sacred place to the Jewish religion. By the 8th of June, the Israeli forces took the entire west bank. |

| Northern Front (Syria):
The Golan Heights were in 1967, and are today, one of the most fortified areas in the world. Between 1946 and 1967 the Syrians transformed the Golan Heights into a huge military compound. They laid mines by the thousands. Countless fortified positions were built on the steep climes and cliffs facing the border with Israel. The Syrians were sure that their fortifications were unbeatable. The Israeli high command saw the Syrian lines as a tough obstacle, and decided not to attack Syria on the ground. The Syrian had a different idea. On the 5th of June, as the Egyptians were hoping for Syria to open a massive ground attack on Israel. The Syrians attempted a few limited attacks on the 5th and 6th, but were beaten easily. Israel had total air superiority…The Syrians now decided to wait for the Israelis, while their artillery was pounding away at Israeli villages and Kibbutzim. On the 7th, shortly after the Paratroopers won Jerusalem, the Israeli government debated an attack on the Syrians, to stop the bombardment. A decision was made to attack and the IDF prepared. During the night Dayan grew hesitant. He insisted that only the DMZ will be taken. Major General Rabin noted that this action is close to useless. Rabin agreed out of respect to the chain of command. On the 8th the Israeli Air Force used its entire force to pound the Golan. They were not informed of the change in plans…The commander of the Northern Command, David Elazar, took this opportunity to ask the General HQ for permission to attack full on. Rabin said he cannot ignore orders from the MoS. So the attack was canceled completely. The heads of the northern communities came to meet the Prime Minister. They demanded from Eshkol to take the Golan and rid them of the constant artillery. Their own houses were bombed to dust. Their families have been sleeping in their shelters for days now. Eshkol, a civilian all his life, was reluctant to go against Dayan, the battle-hardened General. Finally at 7:00am, 9th of June, Dayan changed his mind. He ordered the Northern Command to take the Golan. The plan was for 2 efforts and one fake effort. The main effort was to be in the northern Golan. The Israeli Golani Brigade was the the main unit in this effort. The fighting was difficult as the Syrians were entrenched and the terrain was impassable in many places. By the 11th the entire Height was in Israeli hands. On the 12th the war ended |

| Israel not only won the war, it won the war with less than 1500 casualties. The Arabs took more than 20000. 80% of all Egyptian military hardware was destroyed. Israel tripled its territories. The military accomplishment made by the IDF was outstanding. The IDF was now considered all-powerful. The Arabs were ridiculed in the Israeli press. Israel quickly hinted that an agreement was possible- Land for Peace and recognition in the State of Israel. The Arabs refused. The seed was sown, and though at that time it was not known, the next Arab-Israeli war was less than a decade away. | ||||||||||||
