BATTLE OF DGANIA, MAY 1948

Again the farmers who refused to sourrender their homes stoped the Syrian army, which retreated from Dgania B two. I t was then that the 4 65mm field guns opened fire. The guns were only brought to Israel the night before and had no sights. Even though the crew was not trained, they quickly ranged the guns at the retreating Syrians who panicked and broke. The Syrians were finally stopped, and made no efforts at the Dganias afterwards. Tzemah and The other settlements were taken back by the Israelis, who outnumbered, under equipped and unready, broke the Syrian offensive.
The battle of Dgania is one of many good examples of what made the 1948 war a myth: a few poorly armed, untrained young Israelis stopped 7 regular armies. The defenders of the young nation achieved this miracle with self-assurance, brotherhood and pure courage.
