Richard Neal's
Final Speech
Oct 14th, 1999

People we stand here today on the point of change.
We stand here today as united students of Canterbury University.
Previously Canterbury was known as New Zealand's most apathetic University.
But the situation has become so grave- so desperate- so intolerable.
That the Government has now roused a great beast
And that beast rightly should invoke fear to all politicians.
That fear is not the anger of an angry violent mob.
But the anger that to long have we been pushed.
To long has the past and present Governments pushed students
And we have bent
To long has the past and present Governments pushed apon our academic staff
And we have bent
To long has the past and present Governments eroded the very foundations of academic freedom
And we have bent
Well today Students shout to the country that
We Shall Bend No Longer!!
Through the realisation of freedom we see that the balance of power is changing.
And we offer a warning to the past and present governments that we will no longer play the role of the subordinate child.
We will no longer ask for more like Oliver Twist.
We have been pushed to far to ask.
We are too free to beg.
We are TELLING both present and future governments

Students are not stupid- we know fee increases and cuts in Government funding in present years are but mid points of a history of abuse and warnings of a grave future.
But we also know that student rallies, student occupations, marching on parliamentarians is still only the mid point of what we can and will do.
