Goodnight Moon Core Learning: Number Learning: With your child, look at the clock on the pages in the book. What time does the clock say the first time you see it, the second time and so on? How much time passes between the first time you see the clock and the last time you see the clock? Do you think the time is during the morning or at night? (Parents: the clock times are: 7:00, 7:10, 7:20, 7:30, 7:40, 7:50, 8:00, 8:10. This would be a great time to teach your child to count by 10 and to learn how to tell time.) A,B,C Learning: With your child, notice the hair brush on the table has Bunny's name on the head of the brush. This would be a great time to teach your child how to recognize his/her name if that skill has not been learned and/or to learn how to write his/her name. For an extra fun and meaningful activity, take your child's brush and write his/her name on the back. Shapes: With your child, go through the book and locate all the circles, triangles and rectangles. Social Studies: Discuss with your child when this story might have taken place. Look at the pictures and read the story again. Do you think this this could have taken place 100 years ago, 50 years ago, 20 years ago, modern day or perhaps it's a futuristic story. There are no wrong answers! This is also a great opportunity to discuss and compare how you were put to bed compared to how your child is put to bed. Science: With your child, learn the phases of the moon. New Moon, Waxing Crescent Moon, First Quarter Moon, Waxing Gibbous Moon, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous Moon, Last Quarter Moon, and Waning Crescent Moon. www.surfnetkids.com/games/moon_phases.htm Science Experiment: Draw a chart with eight squares. Over the next month, draw the moon, identify the phase and record the date. How many days does it take the moon to pass through all eight phases? Music: Learn the song: Hey Diddle, Diddle Hey diddle, diddle, the cat and the fiddle, the cow jumped over the moon, the little dog laughed to see such sport, and the dish ran away with the spoon. Art: Have some Shadow Fun with your child. With your child, notice the shadows cast by the lamp in the book. Tell your child that you are going to have some shadow fun also. Take a lamp or projector (if using a lamp be sure to place something over the lamp so the light is shining in a concentrated direction.) Tape a sheet of paper to the wall the light is shining on and then have your child sit between the lamp/projector and the paper. Draw your child's silhouette. Then switch places and allow your child to draw your silhouette. Allow your child to decorate your silhouette while you decorate his/her silhouette. Recipe: "Yummy Mush" 3 cups of water 1 cup of yellow cornmeal butter maple syrup Boil water and cornmeal for about 20 minutes or until thick. Pour into loaf pan and let cool. Butter and add maple syrup and eat. Outdoor Exploring: Take a night hike with your child when the moon is full. During your hike, encourage your child to be very quiet and try to identify as many sounds as he/she can. Look at the sky and look at the moon. Does it look like there is a man in the moon? It used to be said that the moon was made of cheese, ask your child if he/she thinks this is true. Make sure you take some time to look at the stars and identify some constellations.
