Early 80's: Janet made several appearances during the early 80's to the American Music Awards whether it was with ex-husband James Debarge, her family during Michael's "Thriller" reign, or just a small sit in appearance.
Janet won her first set of American Music Awards during the 1987 cermony. Janet won Favorite Soul/R&B for "Nasty" and Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist!
The next year Janet won for her first #1 single "When I think of You" for Favorite Pop/Rock & Soul Single. (1988)
Janet's last AMA win of the 90's officially was for Favorite Female Soul/R&B artist during 1999 for her album The Velvet Rope. At top is a photo from Janet's AMA performance in 1998. At that present time Together Again was the #1 Pop single on the Hot 100.

Unfortunately Janet didn't win an American Music Award during the
janet. era due to the widespread popularity of "The Bodyguard Soundtrack." Although Janet was nominated for numerous awards.

On January 8th 2001, Janet received the AMA's highest honor, its Award of Merit. The inscription on the trophy reads: "Because of her finely crafted, critically acclaimed and socially conscious, multi-platinum albums..and because of her spectacular performances on music videos, television, and worldwide concerts, the Amercian Music Award of Merit is presented to Janet Jackson.



Janet was graced once again with an AMA honor in 2002 for best Pop/Rock Favorite Female Artist, an honor that was well deserved despite the release of the albums most successful pop/rock track "Trust a Try". Janet delivered her thank you speech live from Japan where she had taken the All For You Tour the top of Jan. 2002.
During the 1991 ceremony Janet picked up Fave Soul/R&B Female Artist, Pop Rock Female Artist, and Dance Music Artist of the Year awards.
