Kelly!
(1999)

Welcome to Kelly's Engine Page!! Kelly, my 14 year old daughter (2003), has been going to shows and swap meets with me since 1999 and decided in 2000 that she wanted an engine of her own. We were at an [engine] friends house and she fell in love with an engine, so Dad "negotiated" for her. That engine was an International model 'LA', 1-1/2 to 2-1/2HP. Since then Kelly has acquired two more engines, a 1945 International 'LB', 3 to 5 HP, and a Fairbanks Morse 'Z' model 'D', 1-1/2HP age unknown yet. Kelly likes the enclosed, flat flywheel type of engines. Below are pictures and information on Kelly's engines, each of which have been named! Feel free to email her if you have any questions on them. There is an email link on the home page of "Norm's Old Stuff".

Butch
This was Kelly's first engine, an International 'LA', 1-1/2HP. We are not sure of the age of the engine as it did not have a serial number tag on it. However, it is probably close to 1938 given it has the "new" throttle lever which only appeared in late 'LA' production. LA's were built between 1934 and 1938. This one needed some work to get it running. Compression was almost non-existant, and it needed a gas tank. The magneto was hot and produced a good spark which was good news. The valve cover was not correct, it was off of a model 'LB' which was the successor to the 'LA'. Here are before and after pictures of Butch. He now is on our show trailer powering a corn cleaner. Rex
After having her 'LA' for a year Kelly decided she wanted a 3-5HP 'LA' or 'LB'. After looking at several swap meets and shows we decided to go back to the gentleman that we bought the 'LA' from and buy the 'LB' that we had seen at the time. This is a 1945 3-5HP model and was free but not running when we bought it. It was complete except for a valve cover and muffler. Below is Rex as found - he is still in the "engine hospital" getting finished so there is no "after" picture - yet! Click here for the restoration story of Rex!

Luke
Last summer (2002) we were at the Portland Indiana show in August. Kelly had been looking at FM 'Z' model 'D' engines for a while and had expressed interest in them in the spring when we saw some at the Portland swap meet. Well, we found a number of them in the swap area at the show but they seemed overpriced for what condition they were in. Towards the end of the day we were looking once again in a row and Kelly spied a ZD sitting on a trailer with a bunch of other engines. We stopped to look at it and it looked in pretty nice condition. Well, I could tell Kelly was getting excited about it but I figured it was going to be pricy given the condition. But, I talked to the fellow there and he told me what he wanted - it was less than anything we had looked at that day! So, an offer was made and accepted and we loaded the engine onto the mule that we happened to be riding in (a friend of ours, Joe, uses a mule to get around shows and we were spending the day with him and his Dad - very convenient for taking the engine back to the truck! - thanks Joe!!!) Well, we haven't done much of anything with the engine yet other than to see that there is no spark from the mag. The engine is complete including the crank, the muffler is not original, nor is the paint. It needs decals as well. We'll get to this engine this summer hopefully!
