The Northwest Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1969 as the Bexar County Company 3. Within a few years of opening, the name was changed to the San Antonio Northwest Volunteer Fire Department. The name was long, so most people just called it the Northwest Volunteer Fire Department. Over the course of time the department has been in operation, most of the area we once provided fire protection to has been annexed by the City of San Antonio. We were left with an approximate 4 square mile area. In 2003, voters in our coverage area voted to approve an Emergency Services District. This was a joint venture with the a neighboring department.. However, in September 2005, the E.S.D. decided not to renew our contract to provide fire protection. In October, 2005, N.W.V.F.D. teamed up with Bexar County Rehab as the West Bexar County responder. Bexar County Rehab is the group that responds to large incidents to provide firefighters and other response personnel with drinks, snacks, etc. They also assist with search and rescue operations. N.W.V.F.D. joined B.C.R. to assist with this VERY essential operation. Even though we no longer provide fire protection, we are still active in the community and still desperately need the support of the community, whether financially, or with volunteers.
