Apathy
What happens with the rest of the world doesn't matter.  I've got my own problems to deal with.  The news is a big, corporate-run, useless piece of crap, so why should I watch it?  My local paper isn't worth anything, and we don't have an independent paper.  I don't have time.  There's too much violence and death on the news and it's starting to depress me.  I just can't take it anymore, so I'm boycotting the news.  Who cares?
I hear this every day.  People don't know what's going on beyond "we're at war," and they don't care.  They don't care so much that the people who fund news sources often don't report the "little" things, thereby cutting back my sources of information.  People really don't care.  After all, they've got school to worry about.  They've got their job to worry about.  They have to worry about what guy likes them, and how they should do their hair tomorrow.
Of course, there are people who are starving and sick and really do have their own problems to deal with.  It wouldn't surprise me, however, if these people were to be more informed than those with "real world" problems.
Apparently, people would rather be uninformed, letting the world go by and do whatever the heck it wants without check or balance.  It's all about feeling "good" or "comfortable."  The idea of millions of children starving to death is unsettling, and best not thought about.  The thought that men and women are losing their lives in bloody, senseless battle is disturbing, and could lead to unhealthy thoughts.  Illnesses running rampant in other countries just don't apply here.  So what if another country is having financial problems - so are we.

Those of you who have better things to do are going to wake up to great unpleasantness in the future.  Maybe you'll realize that genocide is very real and very bad, and you'll actually feel guilt.  Maybe you'll catch some disease that finally escaped those "other" countries and reached the U.S.  Maybe one of your loved ones will die in a terrorist attack while on vacation.  Maybe all of these things will happen, and you'll be left wondering: where the heck did that come from?
Those of you who "just can't take it" are likely going to feel immense pain about the same time as those who "just don't care."  You're the ones who will know vaguely what's going on, but cite impending mental illness as a reason to not really know anything.  When atrocities finally break past your selfish barriers, what will happen then?  You won't be able to deal with the "mental anguish" attacking your poor little sensitive mind.
Some day, something's going to happen that will take our comfort level here in the U.S. down to zero.  This terrible something could be prevented, but I doubt it will be because the "moral majority" will have missed the warning signs.  And so, in the end, even as people are dying, these apathetic losers will be left scratching their heads in confusion.
