| South Pole |
| The South Pole is one of Antarctica's few wonders. Though it has very little life around it it has many neat things about it. Well, the earth has two magnetic poles. The North Pole and the South Pole. These magnetic poles make a sort of force field around the earth. Auroras occur around Earth's north and south poles in regions known as auroral ovals. Southern auroras are called aurora australis. The aurora is higher in the atmosphere than how high the highest aircraft can go. The lowest areas are at least 50 miles above the Earth, while the highest reaches 600 miles above the Earth. The American satellites fly at a zone even less than the auroras australis. Some findings have shown that the aurora australis makes sound that goes along with the aurora australis. This information is not true. If the aurora australis does make sound, the sound would have to be created here on Earth by some magnetic effect on the sun's radiation. Any noise created by the aurora would take a very long to travel all the way to the planet. Auroras occur because Earth's magnetic field interacts with the solar wind, a mix of charged particles blowing away from the Sun. The solar wind doesn't hit Earth because of the magnetic field, instead it is pushed to the north or south poles. These winds mix with the atmosphere or space to form the lights. Not only is the South Pole a magnetic pole, but it is an important reason we get the aurora australis. It also protects us from the Sun's dangerous Solar Winds. The South Pole is also being used to test cold weather things. It is also a place where astronauts train for cold weather on Mars! If we ever get to Mars the training will help survival. The South Pole may also have some problems. Though they say the problem is over Antarctica, it is also over the South Pole. This major problem is the hole in the ozone layer. The ozone layer protects earth from the sun's deadly radiation. Even with the ozone layer, sun burn and skin cancer are still out there. Without the ozone layer, we would die from ultraviolet light radiation. Well, this hole has created problems for Antarctica. The heat is melting the icebergs of the continent. This will increase water levels and cause possible permanent flooding. Places like New York, Florida, Europe, and Southern Asian countries will be under water. You know what causes the ozone layer to break. It is caused by pollution. And the being that produces the most pollution is humans. The South Pole produces many great things, like the aurora australis. It also has deadly problems. That's why the South Pole is a world wonder. |
