Chapter Five |
"I know. I just never let myself say all that before. You know? I've gotta be strong for Kayla." He smiled as we stood up together. "You've done a great job Michelle. She seems to be a wonderful little girl." I smiled thinking of my baby. She was a wonderful little girl, and I loved her more than anything. Just then I heard something, the screaming of my child. I looked at Justin and we both ran towards the door. We ran to the playground and saw Lance and Lenny returning form their shopping. Then I saw my little girl laying on the ground. I looked at my 15 year old neighbor, Chris. "Chris! What happened?" I saw Justin leaning down beside Kayla. He instantly reached into his pocket, removing his cell phone, and dialed 911. I returned my attention to Chris, he was obviously upset. "Umm...She was on the swing and I told her not to jump. But I was behind her, and I wasn't fast enough. I couldn't grab her, she was already on the ground. I'm so sorry Michelle. Please don't be mad, please." I hugged Chris tightly. But that time a crowd had formed, and I could hear the ambulance in the distance. "It's okay Chris, calm down. Kayla does that all the time. I'm not mad at you." I left Chris, walking over and kneeling beside my daughter. She looked up at me. "Momma, I'm sorry. My back hurts Momma. Please make it stop." She was now crying, and I had to fight to hold my own tears back. There was my baby, laying flat on her back with her arm twisted underneath her body. The ambulance arrived and Justin began explaining what had happened. He had taken control of the situation. He place his hand delicately on my lower back as he talked. He told Lance and Lenny to get his things together, because he would be staying with me. Then he walked me to my 4-Runner, taking the keys and jumping in the driver's seat. I sat in silence as we followed the ambulance. He looked over at me, "Michelle, she's gonna be okay. I promise, I'm here for you." I looked down at his hand as he interlocked his with mine. He was acting just like I needed him too. I would never have been able to do this on my own. We got to the emergency room and they rushed her straight back. Justin and I were sitting in the waiting room when Lenny walked in. "Hey." I looked up at the bigger man as he sat down. "Where's Lance?" Justin looked at Lenny, then back at me. "Well, we came here to invite you to Florida. I've gotta a couple of weeks off, before the album drops, and I wanted you to come down there with me. Our flight left about 20 minutes ago." Was he being serious? "Why are you still here?" I'm sure you wanna be getting home. I know you must wanna get back to your girlfriend." Justin laughed and grabbed my hand, "Michelle, I don't have a girlfriend." I looked around and everything seemed to be blurred. Everything was happening so fast. My best friend was back in my life, and now my baby was in the ER. I looked up at Justin, "Oh, sorry." Justin went to answer, but before he could the unexpected happened. I heard his voice. |
