Northern Street Rods Whangarei |
Northern Street Rods is based in Whangarei, New Zealand, with just under 50 members spread throughout the Northland region. It is an affiliated Club to the N Z Hot Rod Association and caters for those enthusiasts that own hot rods, street rods, street machines, and muscle cars of predominantly American origin. Vehicles owed by Club members cover from the mid twenties through to the mid seventies. There are close to 30 rods and street machines "on the road" and several more in various stages of construction. Check out photos of some of these on the following pages.
The Club's aim is to promote the sport of hot rodding in it's area in such a way that it is safe and enjoyable for the members and their families. The Club is a run by a committee of seven members who are elected at the annual general meeting. Communication with Club members is via a monthly news sheet and phone. A newsletter is sent out to members every two months and this keeps everyone entertained with interesting happenings and stories from members about their cruises to runs outside the area.
The committee's main task is to organise activities for the members. These range from public displays, often in support of community events such as the A & P Society Summer Show, to evening or afternoon cruises. Every Christmas (mid summer in New Zealand) the Club has a day cruise to one of the local beaches. Here the members can relax and socialise while the barbeque burgers are cooking and Santa arrives to entertain young and old.
Each year the Club's main fundraising event, a swap meet, is held around late August in one of the larger warehouses in Whangarei. Being an undercover swap meet may limit the number of sellers that can be accommodated but at least it means that the Spring showers don't dampen the spirits. Future plans are for a bigger and better event with a run on the Saturday afternoon, social that evening, finishing with the swap meet on the Sunday to make it a full on weekend.
During each year members attend several rod runs, shows, and other activities organised by hot rod clubs outside the 'home' area. A few of the Club cars have been highly placed in National Shows or Runs with these cars often making it into the Top 5 or Top 10 prize arena . In the past few years Northern Street Rods has organised both a highly successfully provincial hot rod show and a run to Paihia north of Whangarei. The 2002 year was a big year for the Club - we organised the New Zealand National Hot Rod Show - officially named the:
Water Street Motors 2002 National Hot Rod Show
This show is one of the premier events on the NZ Hot Rod Association calendar, visitors to the show could see the top hot rods and street machines from throughout NZ.Having just passed it's tenth anniversary in 2001, things are looking good for the Club especially with the current strong growth in membership.
