Northwest Oregon Regional
DBA Tournament!
Hosted by the Oregon Territory DBA'rs
Back to the Plastic Pilum
October 19, 2002
What a kick!  Thanks to Randall Collver and his friend Robyn a good time was had by all 8 participants.  Many donuts and cans of soda were slain that day....

Randy and Robyn provided the armies and the rest of us provided...  er...  good looks and charisma.

I found the experience to be very educational.  Randall's knowledge of the rules is truly encyclopedic, and his knowledge of history is such that one gets the impression he actually saw the 300 Spartans hold the pass.  According to Robyn he's certainly old enough...

I faired poorly, loosing to Robyn, Randy and Phil Jansen.  I did beat Phil's young son Arthur, but just barely.  He sang chirpy little childrens' songs as he collapsed my right flank.  How humiliating...

In the end Troy Stair won.  Randy and Robyn tied for second and  Phil took third.

Troy now prides himself on being the best DBA player in the Pacific Northwest.  His head has swelled like a Macy's parade balloon, so I encourage everyone to show up at our next gig and wipe that smug smile off his face.

Geohex provided prizes in the form of three packs of very fine-looking hills.  Thanks, guys!

A final note:  our organization's motto is "Sixes are better than brain cells."  Can anyone translate this into Latin?  I hope to make T-shirts.

Here's Phil Jansen's take:

What I learned...

1.  Picts vs Sarmations (Phil vs Dynee)

Defending a river bank works fairly well (Cavalry vs Spear), but won't win a battle.  It just consumes time (Even after 2.5 hours, I hadn't learned what else I should have done... I'd like a rematch.)

2.  Picts vs Palmyrans (Phil vs Randy)

Charging your light chariot general and light horse into bows is a "bad idea".  Fortunately I had a chance to run away.

3.  Picts vs Caledonians (Phil vs Dave)

A line of spear vs a line of warband...

Keep your lines straight;  elements out of line can get you into trouble.

Flanking is "good".

4.  Picts vs Caledonians again... a quick rematch

Picts have a litoral homeland.  Make sure your camp is well defended when it's next to a waterway, or the Picts can surprise you (Dave, I'm not sure we did that right -- I think the Camp only gives the first defender a defensive factor;  afterwards, the defenses are gone.  It should have been easier for you to take the camp back.)

Big Battle:  Rome vs Picts, Maccabean Jewish, and Palmyrans

Wow!  What fun!

Facing is important.  When two elements will get into contact with an enemy element, move the "best" one first.  The enemy turns to face;  then you can flank with your other element.

Losing your general is "not" fun.  Make sure he has support so he has a good chance of recoiling safely.

Robyn (left) cuts up my (right) 20mm plastic numidians with his Polybian Romans as Troy (center) stares like a chimp.
After the tournament finished six of us got together for a game of Big Battle DBA.  On the left, from front to back, are me, my brother Michael and Troy commanding Rome.  On the right Randy generals the barbarian horde.  His lieutenants were Phil and Arther (not shown).
A closeup of Phil and Dynee's 2 1/2 hour rumble for the river.  Phil's Picts lost three elements, as did Dynee's Sarmations.  Randy finaly pulled the plug, and the fight ended in a draw.
Randy's Palmyrans beat up on Phil's Picts.  This was Randy's first Palmyran victory in 20 years.  The guy has stamina.  Got to give him that.
Dynee stares in wonder as her Sarmations sit on the river bank, and sit, and sit, and sit...
Arthur, the Boy Wonder, ponders Randy and Robyn's mustered armies.  These guys have over 25,000 figures each.
