On June 7, 2003, the loyal men of OTDBARS gathered to wage biblical war. Troy won the event with a score of 167, making him our GRAND CHAMPION for 2002-2003. Way to go, Troy.
Randy and Robyn set up boards, including terrain and matched armies, the night before the event. Players rotated around them and, not having to worry about aggression rolls and terrain deployment, we played 7 rounds in 5 hours. The pairs were:
Table One: Hyksos versus Early Egyptian
Table Two: Mitanni versus Old Hittite
Table Three: Assyria versus Egypt
Table Four: Mycenaeans versus Sea People
Table Five: Elam versus Babylonia
Table Six: Hebrews versus Phoenecia
Robyn ran the scoring system according to the new national tournament standard, where a victory counts for 25 points minus all elements slain by the looser. The looser gets 1 point per stand he eliminates, 3 points for zapping a general and 2 points for taking a camp or BUA. Thus if I play Bob and loose 3-4, I would get 3 points. Bob would get 21.
Randy, our President for Life, kindly acted as referee. He also got a few games in, including a playtest of De Bellis Jacobitis. His input was, as always, astute, and it has made the rules variant a better game.
As always our sportsmanship was fantastic. Play was fast-paced and exciting, especially for Robyn, who lost a game 0-4 after rolling four ones to Troy's four sixes. Probably not the sort of excitement he was looking for, but if the dice gods are against you, what can you do?
A hearty welcome to Milton and Ashton, our newest members. In a game against me Milton rolled one after one after one, then killed my general (while flanked) with a 6, handing him the victory. Well done, Milt.
Ashton, a rank newbie, played very well and took fourth place with 79 points, beating some very experienced, handsome, and well-educated players in the process. NEXT TIME I WILL CRUSH YOU! Er, moving on...
After tournament play finished we had a fine meal at a local Chinese place, then gathered to wage a few big battles. Here occured perhaps the most pointless, stupid maneuver ever made by a DBA player.
My Assyrians faced off against Mark's Elamites on the right side of a BBDBA board. My commander, Troy, had allocated the highest PIP dice to me. So, drunk with PIPS, I proceeded to dance my elements across the field like a water ballet team.
Mark made an effective attack, taking me down to 9 elements, then in one fantastic run I defeated him. As his elements fled the field I sent my chariots out to make figure 8's around his defeated horde, just to squander my pips and piss him off.
Well, I didn't know that bows, even if demoralized, could still shoot. He killed one of my light chariots and shot my general in the butt. So we were both demoralized. We cancelled each other out. Sigh...
A fine time was had by all. Mark is designing scenarios for our fall tourney, to be held in September or October. Hope to see you there!
