Human rights group says Malaysia mistreating Aceh refugees
Malaysia has been accused of forcibly repatriating refugees from the Indonesian
province of Aceh, putting their safety at risk amid as the province's conflict continues.
The New York-based Human Rights Watch has released a report that it says
documents Malaysia's deportations of refugees and asylum-seekers from Aceh, and
the mistreatment of Acehnese refugees in Malaysia.
The group accuses Malaysia of violating its international legal obligations by failing to
distinguish between Acehnese refugees fleeing conflict and other undocumented
Indonesians in Malaysia.
Indonesia declared martial law in Aceh last May and launched an all-out offensive
aimed at crushing separatist rebels of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM).
