Indonesian police to question Bashir over terror actions

Indonesian police say they will question militant Islamic cleric Abu Bakar Bashir as a suspect in terrorism cases.

Bashir is due to be released from jail on April 30, after serving 18 months in prison for immigration offences and document forgery.

The national police chief, General Da'i Bachtiar, says there is information, witnesses and evidence that could be used to link Bashir to actions in Indonesia and abroad.

General Bachtiar says the information was gained during the questioning of jailed Jemaah Islamiah operatives in Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore.

He has refused to give details of possible charges, but says Bashir will be interviewed as a suspect on charges of perpetrating terrorist acts.

Foreign governments accuse Bashir of having led the Jemaah Islamiah terror network, which is blamed for a string of attacks across South East Asia, including the October 2002 Bali bombings.
