Bashir lawyers seek mainstream Islamic support
Lawyers for militant Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Bashir say they will ask major
Indonesian Islamic groups to denounce so-called "foreign intervention" being used to
keep him in jail as a terrorism suspect.
Indonesian authorities have said they are investigating Bashir over possible terrorism
links, putting his scheduled release from prison at the end of this month in doubt.
The lawyers plan to meet the Indonesian Council of Muslim Scholars, the country's
main authority on Islam, and are also seeking meetings with the country's two largest
Islamic groups.
Bashir was due to be freed April 30 after serving a sentence for immigration offences
but police say they have new evidence to allow them to question him as a terror
suspect.
