APRIL 1806 FRENCH TURN


Ignoring the nearby Russians, Napoleon steals a march on Charles and overruns Vienna,
cutting the Austrians' supply lines and leaving Charles isolated at Linz.

In the north, Soult takes command of the newly created Armée du Oder at Berlin.

Napoleon falls on the city with 70,000 men and crushes the 10,000 man Austro/Russian garrison.
French casualties: 5,000. Austrian casualties: 5,000. Russian casualties: 5,000 (captured).


APRIL 1806 ALLIED TURN


Charles concentrates all available Austrian forces in an effort to eject Napoleon from Vienna. Kutusov marches from Warsaw with 50,000 men but the Russians are still 40 miles away when the battle is fought outside Vienna at the hamlet of Berndorf. The battle sways back and forth until the Austrians are finally broken and forced to retreat.

Reinforced form Budapest, Charles makes good the distance between Linz and Vienna and approaches the city with 105,000 men. Napoleon faces the Austrian army with 65,000 frenchmen. From the north, Kutusov and his army of 50,000 struggle to arrive but the footsore Russians are still 40 miles from the city when Charles attacks. The hamlet of Berndorf anchors the French line. Austrian assaults on the position fizzle as Marshal Lannes directs the defense of the French center. Massed French guns hammer the exposed Austrians throughout the afternoon. Judging the time is right, Napoleon commits his heavy cavalry which pierces the Austrian line. The numerically supoerior Austrian cavalry has difficulty reacting in the resulting confusion. A desperate counterchage led by the yourg Archduke John fails to right the situation. WithVienna's spires within sight, Chalres is forced to quit the field.
French casualties: 20,000. Austrian casualties: 35,000.
