FLIGHT OF THE EAGLE

JANUARY 1806 FRENCH TURN

Napoleon marches from Dresden to Berlin. Blucher's outnumbered garrison is no match for the attackers and he retires in disarray. Napoleon triumphantly enters the Prussian capital. The Prussian court retires to Konigsberg.

Marshal Davout arrives at Amsterdam and drives the Anglo-Russian expeditionary force back into the sea. In the name of the Emperor, Davout decrees the liberation of the Batavian Republic.

Soult and Ney overrun Hanover while Murat, with his first command, takes Cassel.

With little fanfare, the Gironde Army of Observation crosses the Pyrennees and establishes a french presence in Spain.

Battle of Berlin
Napoleon marches the 65,000 man Grande Armee to the outskirts of Berlin where he is met by Blucher's 15,000 Prussian defenders. Blucher refuses to retire inside the city and deploys his forces. The French make short work of the vastly outnumbered defenders. Blucher retreats his remaining forces to the northeast to avoid further destruction to the city. French losses: 5,000. Prussian losses: 10,000.

Battle of Amsterdam
Marshal Davout arrives at Amsterdam with the Army of the Rhine (90,000). The 35,000 Anglo-Russian defenders retire into the city except for 5,000 Russians who are quicky overrun. The Iron Marshal proceeds to assault the fortifications but the defenders repel the initial French assaults. Davout redoubles his efforts and a breech is made. With the French pouring into the city, the remaining defenders surender and Russian shipping barely escapes to the open sea before being captured. In the name of the Emperor, Davout decrees the liberation of the Batvian Republic. French losses: 10,000. Russian losses: 10.000. British losses: 25,000 (15,000 captured)

Wearing a black Hungarian pelisse, a black dolman trimmed with gold braid and astrakhan fur, a black-and-gold sash, a small gold-embroidered cartridge box, a scarlet shako, with a white aigrette of heron's plumes, Murat rides into the city after an intense but successful assault. French losses: 5,000. Prussian losses: 5,000.

Battle of Hannover
Marshals Soult and Ney quickly secure the city. French losses: 5,000. Prussian losses: 5.000.

JANUARY 1806 ALLIED TURN

The twin falls of Berlin and Amsterdam resonate through the Allied camp like a thunderbolt. The Prussians retire in generally good order to the Vistula where they are met by the advance guard of the Russian armies advancing from the south. Kaiser Franz, taking advantage of the french involvement in Prussia, pushes his armies back up the Danube. General Johann Hiller, victor of Loeben, falls upon the french garrison at Trieste. The city capitulates and Dalmatia vanishes as quickly as it appeared. Following the victory, General de Division (not a Marshal yet!) Marmont's force at Innsbruck remains the only french outpost on Austrian soil.

Battle of Trieste
Dalmatian patriots are still celebrating when Hiller descends on the city with 30,000 men determined to reassert Hapsburg authority. The french commander has 15,000 defenders who retire behind the city walls. Hiller, aware of disastorous events unfolding to the north and the urgent need for a victory, orders an immediate assault which succeeds in breaking the defender's will to resist. 5,000 frenchman and 5,000 Dalmations become Austrian prisoners. By decree from Vienna, the Dalmatian state is dissolved.Austrian losses: 5,000. French losses: 10,000.
