FLIGHT OF THE EAGLE

MARCH 1808 FRENCH TURN

Upon hearing of the British evacuation of Bayonne, Napoleon returns to Paris, seemingly unconcerned with the increased Austria activity along the Danube River valley. Before leaving for the capital, Napoleon orders Soult to clean out the British from Bayonne, which Soult does with little loss. Other than a few minor movements, the Grande Armee spread across Poland and the French forces in Bavaria remain stationary.

MARCH 1808 ALLIED TURN

With the coming of spring, the allied powers move to action. The English begin a two prong invasion of Spain. Wellington overpowers Blake outside the gates of Ciudad Rodrigo and Moore overruns Spanish border outposts near Badajoz.

Protected by a swarm of irregular cavalry, the Russians move out of their great fortified winter camp and begin assembling.

Eager to erase any doubts over his willingness to fight lingering after the evacuation from Bayonne, Wellington marches 25,000 British regulars over the Spanish border at Ciudad Rodrigo. Blake, outnumbered almost 2 to 1 but with a total superiority in cavalry, chooses not to defend behind the city walls, lest it become a trap. The armies slug it out over the course of the day. Wellington finds his lack of cavalry a serious detriment but eventually the superior English musketry force Blake to quit the battle. The Spanish refuse to let themselves be trapped within the city walls. Blake slips away and joins Costanos to the southeast. The English pursuit is ineffectual.
