MAY 1809 FRENCH TURN

After his defeat at Badajoz, Pallofox retreats to Talavera where he consolidates his forces. Militia bands spring up in cities across Spain in reponse to thE English invasion. Soult maintains his position at the headwaters of the Douro.





MAY 1809 ALLIED TURN

Wellington allows the Spanish no respite. Forcing his men at a rapid pace through mountain passes, he descends upon Ciudad Rodrigo, defeats Blake and captures the city.

After 1 1/2 years of inconclusive fighting, the Tsar signs a peace treaty with Turkey.

Wellington attacks Blake outside Ciudad Rodrigo with 40,000 men. The 5,000 Frenchmen under Blake's command promptly shut themselves up inside the city but Blake's 20,000 Spaniards choose to meet the English and their Portuguese allies outside the city. Wellington successfully turns Blake's exposed right flank with his English regulars and almost total superiority in cavalry. Blake soon finds himself swept up in the debris of his army as the survivors flee toward Madrid.
