About Dumaguete City

Dumaguete City is more popularly known as the City of Gentle People. It is the capital city of Negros Oriental. Dumaguete became a first class city on 1 July 1982, and then a chartered city on 24 November 1948.

The city is known for its number of clean and reasonably-priced restaurants, many of them geared towards chicken cuisine (a local favorite). There are a number of hotels and pension houses and inns, many of them at rates starting at under US$10 a day.

The city has four hospitals and ten clinics. Its educational community has an estimated total of 30,000 students, all enrolled in the city's three main universities (Silliman, Foundation, and St. Paul), two colleges, three vocational schools, 12 public schools, and about 5 privately-run high schools.

The city's population of 90,000 people speak Cebuano and are conversant in Filipino. Dumaguetenos are notably fluent in English.

At the heart of the city is Silliman University, which is the first university established outside of Manila, and is also the first Protestant school founded in the Philippines. The entire Silliman campus has been declared a bird sanctuary. An anthropology museum houses an extensive collection of Filipino cultural artifacts dating back to the 18th century.

The mode of public transportation in and around the city is the tricycle, which are motorcycles equipped with sidecars, and which comfortably seats 2-5 persons depending on the size. Public transportation to nearby municipalities and neighboring cities are via passenger buses and jeepneys.

Dumaguete is an ideal place for get-away vacations. Beaches dot the coastal areas which also serve as take-off points for nearby world class diving sites.
