God Bless Kyrgyzstan
We have constructed a God who is a nationalist. We don’t pray: “God Bless Wyoming,” after all. (And if you do - how silly). And although in times of crisis we may offer prayers for a certain community or region, we don't generally believe that each state, county, city, etc has its own discrete relationship with God .. a unique calling. No, we pray for God to bless America (never other nations of course - that’s up to them I guess ... As if God hasn’t blessed America enough and we need to beg for more, lest we run out of some precious consumer commodity or have to pay an extra 25 cents a gallon for gas - Heaven forbid, literally. ..Or maybe we feel there's only so much Blessing to go around, and we gots ta get ours first .. Each nation for itself, when it comes to God's Blessings..). Yes, we believe God 'deals' with nations, not states. So, it must be true then that God also deals with Laos? Ecuador? Belgium? Taiwan? Togo? Does God have a unique calling for each nation? And lets' admit it: although we don't like to be consciously aware of it, we do like to feel that God deals with America a bit 'more' that He does with other nations. And to what extent is this nationalism we impart to God based on race? tribe? biology? DNA? - apart from "border"? What is God's relationship to national borders anyway .. apparently he is a 'respecter' of them? And are His dealings with nations then contingent upon the borders and boundaries man (sic) makes, and remakes? Is God really as much of a nationalist as we have made him out to be? |
