The 2002 Western Regional Conference of the National Youth Advocacy Coalition (NYAC) will be held at the University of New Mexico (UNM) the weekend of September 6, 7 & 8. Attendance will draw from the entire state of New Mexico plus Texas, Arizona, Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Kansas and Nebraska.

The fact that NYAC has chosen to bring the conference to Albuquerque is a recognition of the significant local community efforts to support gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth. This year's conference is co-sponsored by Common Bond (Albuquerque) and The University of New Mexico Women's Resource Center.

The National Youth Advocacy Coalition is the only national LGBTQ organization working to meet the comprehensive needs of these young people. It provides advocacy for LGBTQ youth in an effort to end discrimination against them and to ensure their physical and emotional well being. Common Bond is one of 130 community-based organizations across the country that are members of NYAC.

A special feature of these conferences is that the program is based as much as possible on YOUTH initiatives -- the topics they most want to discuss with their peers from the Western United States.

This year's NYAC Western Region will:
1) give queer youth and their allies a place to learn, teach, engage, socialize and have fun,
2) give everyone a chance to find out why Albuquerque is so awesome, and
3) give the community a chance to support queer youth issues and learn what their lives are about.
