Lessons From A Box
By Annie Nybo

The box is perfect
Made by human hands
Yet there is no sign of them
Except for the loving care that went into the delicate features
Every brush stroke of emerald paint
Every slender silver nail that rests in the wood
Even the key, beautifully created to fit only this lock
It is a symbol of perfection,
An untainted creation in a tainted world.

But like all “perfect” things,
Imperfections soon surface.
The right corner was broken off
Replaced with glue,
Nothing shows but a crack,
A thin hairline fracture that separates the box
From ancient glory it used to possess.
The paint is no longer lustrous-
Only some places reflect the emerald of the past.
The box hid secrets in its days of splendor,
Now the rusted key sits inside the behemoth’s belly
Rattling as it snores through its life, condemned to sit on a shelf.

A once perfect box
Now never can be
Reminds us now of our human fragility
A simple hairline fracture – not hard to disguise
Bur the gap widens steadily,
Separating us from life.
The paint chips away
But some is left behind
Distant reminders of a path long forsaken.
The key to life is hidden
Buried beneath rules and “truths”
That clouds the mind and confuses the soul.

And so my friends,
Take a lesson from a box
The fracture is necessary
Without a river there is no bridge
Find the bridge and cross it – to life!
