For quite some time now I’ve been pondering what might happen if something were to ever happen to Connie in some physical way. It’s one of the last things left that would truly make Andy go over the edge. And so I decided to play around with this idea a bit and see where I’d end up. As usual, when your VP is writing, all things lead to the gutter.

The timeframe for this story is considered somewhere between Season 10 and the upcoming Season 11. Consider it my version of a typical mid-summer day in the Sipowicz/McDowell household. Andy and Connie aren’t married yet.

Consider this my effort to contend with Vicki for the gutter crown!

Happy Swimming A & Cers!!!

Now & Forever

Whenever I’m weary

From the battles that rage in my head

You make sense of madness

When my sanity hangs by a thread

I lose my way, but still you seem to understand

Now and forever, I will be your man.

Sometimes I just hold you

Too caught up in me to see

I’m holding a fortune that heaven has given to me.

I’ll try to show you each and every way I can.

Now and forever, I will be your man.

Now I can rest my worries and

Always be sure that I won’t be alone anymore

If I’d only known you were there all the time.

All this time.

Until the day the ocean doesn’t touch the sand,

Now and forever, I will be your man.

Opening Scene

Andy and Connie’s Bedroom

The scene opens with Andy in bed under the covers. Connie’s side of the bed is empty. He can hear the shower running in the bathroom. He rolls over to her side and lays his face in her pillow remembering the night before.

The Night Before

Andy remembering the events of the previous evening in great detail.

Yesterday had been a really fun day after work. They’d gone to the park in the evening with the kids after work and had a picnic. Andy had picked the kids up from Andrea’s house and brought a picnic basket with him. Connie had met him at the park. The entire family had a great time together. Andy and Theo played catch in the park. Connie cheered her two boys on. Andy was a big kid at heart and it was just another reason why she loved him. It was moments like this when he let his guard down that she glimpsed the man he really was. Those moments only made her love him more.

They sat on the blanket and finished their meal. Afterwards, Theo asked if Connie would push him on the swings. Connie readily agreed. She picked up Michelle and put her in the baby swing while Theo swung alongside them.

“Higher, mommy. Higher!!” Theo shouted to Connie.

“If I push you any higher sweetheart, you’ll swing all the way to the moon.”

Andy looked on watching these faces of the people he loved and how blessed he was to have their love. Inside his heart he felt an immense calm.

They’d come home exhausted. They got the kids put to bed and then collapsed in each other’s arms afterwards on the couch. Andy had woken up about 11:30 p.m. and tried to get Connie off the couch but she wouldn’t budge. Her arms were around him and they wouldn’t let go. So he picked her up as gently as he could and tried to quietly lay her on their bed. Michelle was sound asleep in her crib. Connie awoke finally as he was putting her under the covers.

“What time is it?” she asked sleepily rubbing her eyes.

“Almost midnight. Way past your bedtime.” Andy chuckled softly as he kissed her forehead. He always kidded her about dozing off on the couch with him. It was a private joke they shared together.

Connie returned the kiss as she reached up and put her arms around him.

“Thanks for tucking me in.” she whispered in his ear. She began raining small, delicate kisses on his face as her fingers worked to unlace the drawstring of his pajama bottoms.

“Thank you for the picnic tonight and the park.” She whispered as she kissed him again this time on the mouth.

“You’re welcome.” As he returned her kiss.

Soon their kissing became a frenzied need. Connie needed Andy and she needed him now. Her mouth slanted over his, their tongues finding and stroking. Her hands were busy unfastening the buttons to his pajama top, and at the same time, his fingers unfastened her shirt.

Pushing aside her shirt, Andy found her breasts. He stroked each nipple with the pad of his thumb. Gently holding them in his palms, he administered detailed attention to one nipple and then the other, first licking them to hard peaks and then sucking each in turn until Connie sighed with the intensity of the pleasure.

Connie pushed Andy on his back then and straddled him. She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him with such fervor it was a wonder they could even breathe. His hands slowly grasped her hips as he slowly lowered her weight onto him. Connie felt the hot tip of his penis as she settled herself over him, slowly taking him inside her. She paused giving her body ample time to accept his. For a moment, neither moved.

Then as slowly as she’d descended, Connie rose and sighed feeling warm and very womanly as she set the pace of their lovemaking. She rocked back and forth gently setting the tempo. With his hands on her hips, Andy guided her movements until she reached orgasm and he did too almost immediately afterward. Andy wrapped his arms completely around her waist and wordlessly hugged her. Safe and content they fell asleep in each other’s arms.

Scene II

The Morning After

A Hot Summer Morning in Manhattan

Place: Andy & Connie’s Apartment

Time: 7:00 a.m.

Andy and Connie are in the kitchen getting ready for the day. Connie is making Theo’s lunch and Andy is helping her clean up. They are just cleaning up from breakfast.

Andy puts the breakfast dishes in the sink and takes a piece of bacon and snaps it in two. He puts one piece in his mouth and puts the other half in Connie’s mouth. Connie playfully takes it from his fingers as she nips at his fingertips with her lips.

“Ouch…” Andy smiles ruefully at her. “Hey, that hurt.”

“I know how to make it all better.” As she takes his finger into her hand and kisses it.

“Oh, I bet you do.” And Andy kisses her on the mouth.

Connie returns the kiss. “Andy…we better go.”

Andy stared at her with a glint in his eye again remembering the night before. He caught her meaning and could see she was in a fun loving mood this morning. He could see the joy in her eyes. He kissed her quickly again.

“OK, we’re going. But you started it. Anyways, I’ll see you later...OK.” as he stood behinds her and wrapped his arms around her and embraced her. He gave her another kiss only this time on the cheek. “I’ll get Theo to school and see you at the station house. I’ve got some fives to type up from yesterday.”

“OK…” as Connie glances at her watch. “I better get Michelle to Andrea’s. I’m already late.” Yet she still kept Andy’s arms in place around her waist.

Andy playfully kissed her again only this time he kissed her neck. Connie let out a sigh.

“Andy…we’re gonna be late for work.” Connie returned the kiss by kissing his cheek. Andy ignored her remark, kissed her again and released her.

“I gotta go.” He told her with a grin on his face.

Connie smiled up at him. “Maybe we ought to have picnics in the park more often.”

Scene III

Later that Morning

Time: 9:00 a.m.

Place: The Streets of New York City

The workday began like any other day at the 15th precinct for Connie McDowell. She and her partner, Rita Ortiz, had just come from a canvas of a vacant lot over on Avenue D with Andy and John and they had been headed back to the station house when a call came in over the airwaves.

An attempted robbery/homicide was in progress at a bodega on Avenue C.

“15th Squad responding.” Rita answers.

As they arrive at the scene, they notice a tall white male in jeans and a t-shirt bolt from the store. The detectives give chase in their car and the perp goes flying over their car hood and lands on his side on the asphalt. Connie and Rita get out of their car and Connie goes to arrest him. After being momentarily stunned, the suspect gets up, turns on her and bolts. She chases him down an alley. He pulls a gun. Connie pulls out hers. They exchange gunfire. Connie gives chase and catches up with him. She detains him by taking a short cut through a side street, sees a garbage can where the two alleys intersect and throws a garbage can in his way. The suspect stumbles and falls to the rough asphalt below. He goes to pull out another gun, a semi-automatic, when Connie catches up with him and fires a warning shot. “Freeze asshole!” The perp doesn’t listen and gets ready to shoot at her. Connie fires her weapon and hits the guy in the arm. He drops his weapon. Connie kicks the gun away as she sees Rita in the alleyway.

”Just not your day, huh!”

Rita picks up the suspect’s gun as she arrives less than a second later from behind. She keeps her gun on the suspect as Connie pulls out her handcuffs and they arrest the perp. Just then a uniform patrol car pulls up to take the suspect to the house. Rita notices a bullet hole at the top of Connie’s leather jacket.

“Connie. You okay??”

“Yeah…why wouldn’t I be?”

“Look.”

Connie turns to look at her shoulder and notices the hole in her jacket. She proceeds to take the jacket off and sees a small crimson spot on her shirt. As they were exchanging gunfire in the alley during the chase, a bullet grazed her shoulder. She has a small flesh wound in her right shoulder. It’s bleeding but it’s not too bad.

Rita gets on the radio…“15th Squad to Central.”

“Detective shot…minor wound. We’re in route to Bellevue. 15th Squad out.”

Andy and John were on their way back to the stationhouse to interview a witness when they hear this conversation go out over the air. Andy’s face turned pale.

“Andy…she’s OK. We’ll go to the hospital. She’ll be fine. Rita would have said if she was seriously hurt.”

Scene IV

The Emergency Room at Bellevue

Connie and Rita arrive at the emergency room. Connie is taken to an exam room. Rita goes with her. Connie’s shoulder is bleeding a little more and she’s a bit quiet.

“Connie, hang in there with me. You OK??” Rita asks.

“I’m all right…just starting to feel a little bit green.”

In the ER, the doctor treats Connie for minor shock and then they stitch and bandage her up. The doctor writes a prescription for a painkiller and for an antibiotic to prevent infection.

“Take this every 4 hours for pain as needed. And take the antibiotic twice a day. You’re lucky that bullet only grazed you. You’ll be sore for about a week detective and the stitches will dissolve in about a week or so. Till then…no heavy lifting on that shoulder. I’ll want to see you again in two weeks. You can make a follow up appointment with my office.”

“Is an 11 month old considered heavy lifting??”

The doctor chuckled at that remark.

“Well, you can pick her up…just don’t over do it.”

“Gotcha doc.”

Andy and Junior walk into the ER. John sees Rita walking out of one of the exam rooms.

“How is she?” John asks.

Rita answers him while looking at Andy. “She’s fine, Andy. She’s just a little sore. She’s a tough cookie. She didn’t even realize she’d been shot. The doctor is just finishing stitching her up now.”

Andy goes into the exam room. Connie sees him. She is sitting on the gurney in her bra and getting ready to put her shirt back on. The doctors have given her a temporary sling to wear for a few days to keep her arm immobile.

“Connie! Are you okay?” Andy asks her…just relieved to see her face.

“Andy, I’m fine. It’s just a flesh wound.”

He looks at her shoulder and sees the dressing the doctor has applied. Connie notices he has a bit of a glazed look in his eyes…sort of like a little child that is lost. His bottom lip is quivering ever so slightly and his voice is filled with emotion. Connie notices this as she tries to alleviate his fears.

“Andy…really…I’m all right.” She pleaded with him as she bent to kiss his forehead. “Let’s get back to the house.”

“You’re not going back there…you’re going home and rest. I’ll tell Rodriguez that you’re taking some lost time.”

“Andy…I feel fine. Really...if I get tired, I’ll go home. OK?”

“Connie!”

“Andy…I said I’m fine. End of discussion! We’ll talk about it later tonight!”

“No, we’ll talk about it right now!”

“Andy…don’t you raise your voice to me! I said we’d discuss it later. I’ve got a perp to interview. You know damn well that if this were you sitting here you’d be doing the exact same thing. I don’t appreciate the double standard. I always thought we’d understood each other on this subject.”

“Apparently not.” Replied Andy rather sarcastically.

“Apparently this conversation is over. NOW! I’ll see you back at the stationhouse!” Connie proceeds to finish buttoning her shirt, walks out of the exam room with an angry look on her face while slamming the exam room doors together.

As she walks through the exam room doors, we hear the sharp, piercing sound of bedpans crashing to the floor. A moment later we see Andy gruffly walking out of the exam room with a pissed off look on his face.

“C’mon Junior.” Andy barks at John. John gets up rather hurriedly and follows Andy out with Rita by his side.

“That went rather well, don’t you think? Good to see this isn’t affecting their relationship.” Junior remarks to Rita

.

“You ever get the feeling you’re caught in the middle of one of those old dramatic movies?” Rita told him.

You mean like “Anthony and Cleopatra”? John asked.

“Yeah, only Cleopatra never had King Kong for a boyfriend.” Rita replied.

“Well, at least he left the hospital still standing. This is gonna be a long day.” As Junior let out a frustrated sigh.

John and Rita exit the hospital and return to their respective partners.

Andy and Junior got in their squad car and drove back to the precinct. Andy was silent all the way back to the stationhouse. Junior knew better than to say anything. Andy was going to be in a foul mood for the rest of the day.

Scene V

The 15th Precinct – Squadroom

Location: The Pokey Room

Connie and Rita were interviewing their perp from this morning in the pokey room. Andy and John had just gotten back to the squad.

Andy still hadn’t calmed down yet from the scene earlier at the hospital. He and Junior went into the “gallery room” and watched through the glass as Connie and Rita interviewed the man that had almost turned Andy’s life upside down today. Andy was furious and with each passing minute, he anxiety grew.

John noticed Andy’s anxiousness. “Andy, calm down. Breathe will ya. Connie’s doing fine.”

“This asshole…so help me…if he lays one hand on her.”

“So, Ramon, when we run your fingerprints, are we gonna find the evidence we’re looking for?” Connie asked him.

“Kiss my ass, you bitch.” As he spit at Connie and moved to strike her.

“That’s it. This asshole needs a beating.”

Finally, Andy couldn’t take anymore and within seconds he busts through the door. John follows him in and tells him, “Andy, take it easy.” But Andy doesn’t hear him.

“We’ll take the interview from here.” Andy informs Connie.

“What? Andy, what the hell’s wrong with you? This is our collar and our interview. And I’ll thank you to keep your hands off my perp.” Connie was pissed.

“Andy, c’mon!!!” John yells at him.

Rita leaves the room to get Baldwin.

All of a sudden, Andy just snaps and throws punches at the perp. John jumps between the two and Baldwin separates Andy from the perp.

John yelling to Baldwin. “Get him the hell out of here!!”

Baldwin wrestles Andy off of the perp and gets him out into the hallway. Andy heads for the locker room.

“Don’t touch me!” Andy snaps at Baldwin. Baldwin lets him go.

“Andy…man…you gotta calm down.”

Connie immediately follows him into the locker room and locks both doors.

“OK, Andy…what’s this all about? What the hell’s wrong with you? What were you thinking in there…that I wouldn’t notice you were taking a collar away from me!!! Have you lost your mind? Do you have any idea what you just did to me in there? You undermined my ability to do my job and do it effectively. Not to mention the embarrassment of me and my co-workers. What the hell were you thinking or were you?”

“I…I was trying to protect you from this asshole.”

“That’s it, isn’t it!! That’s what this little outburst is really all about. You’re pissed because I got hurt. And the minute the going gets tough your answer for everything is to pick a fight. Well, you want a fight…here I am!”

“I thought we had an understanding between us that we’d never let work get in the way of our own personal feelings for one another. We’d respect each other both on and off the job. Apparently, the same professional courtesy I give you doesn’t apply to me.”

“Connie…”

“Screw you Andy!!!” And Connie walks out of the locker room slamming the door.

Scene 6

Lt. Rodrieguez’s Office

He knew he’d screwed up big time.

“Andy!!!! In my office…NOW!!!”

“What the hell is this Andy?” Tony asked him.

“What the hell’s wrong with you? I won’t have this in my squad, understood??? Or else either you or McDowell is out of here.”

“No, you don’t need to tell me.”

“I won’t put up with this bullshit Andy!!! Whatever this is, I want it worked out by the end the tour today or else one of you is gone. Got it. Now go do whatever’s necessary to work it out. You can start with an apology.”

“C’mon Lou…”

“Stop it, Andy!! Or do you like the idea of pushing pencils at One PP until your retirement. Now what’s it gonna be.”

Last Scene

Connie and Andy’s Apartment

She’d been avoiding the inevitable all day long. She hadn’t been looking forward to this conversation but she knew this conversation had to happen. It was unavoidable. Andy had kept his distance from her all day long. Their little exchange of words at the hospital hadn’t made for the most pleasant of work conditions between them today. They’d been on edge with each other all day long.

And then later on at the station house when he’d embarrassed her in front of all her co-workers. That had been the last straw. It was time for her to put her foot down. He had to understand that this was the way it was going to be. No matter how much he wanted to protect her. There were always going to be times that she would have to fend for herself and she might get hurt in the process. This morning in the alley way had been one of those times. Andy had never been overprotective of her on the job. He always knew where and when to draw the line and he always let her do her job her way. It was one of the things she admired the most about him. He’d always been respectful of her as a cop. That meant a lot to her.

But she knew that today was eating him up on the inside. What little he’d told her about Sylvia’s death, she understood that a part of him blamed himself for not being able to stop it. She knew what he’d been thinking this morning. What if that bullet hadn’t been just a flesh wound? What if???

Well, she’d had all day to think about that too. And that knowledge hadn’t consoled her. If she’d had it to do all over again, she would have done the same thing she’d done this morning. Destiny and fate made for strange bedfellows. When it came right down to it, all you can do is live your life. The best way you know how. And trust in your heart.

She knew that today Andy’s worst fears had kicked into overdrive and she knew those were the reasons behind why he’d overreacted with her in the hospital this morning. It wasn’t Andy the cop talking. It was Andy…her lover, her friend, her partner and soon to be husband. He couldn’t take one more loss. She’d give anything to take all the pain he’d suffered in his life away.

They’d wrapped the case up early. Lt. Rodriguez sent Connie home early today and told her to take some lost time. She’d been sleeping on the couch when she heard the key turn in the door lock. It was Andy.

“Connie??? You awake?? Theo and Michelle are at Andrea’s. She said she’d keep them for the night so you can get some sleep.” He whispered silently. He sat there next to her on the couch desperately wanting to hold her at this moment.

“I just stopped to pick up a few things…I’ll be out of your way in a minute” and Andy got up to go into the bedroom. Connie caught his arm as he got up from the couch.

“And just where do you think you’re going?”

“Back to the stationhouse…I figured I’d flop in the crib tonight. I figure you probably don’t want me around right about now.”

“Andy…don’t run away from me. Every time you get scared, you run. I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere. You’re not going to lose me. I don’t know how many times I have to say it.”

“You have me…all of me…right here. (And Connie took her hand and put it over his heart.)

“I’m sorry…Connie. I overreacted which is me just bein’ me. I screwed up and I’m sorry.”

“Andy, I know.”

“It’s just that today I saw you in that hospital emergency room and every person I’ve ever loved and lost….it all came back to me again.” His voice broke off as it quivered again with emotion.

She put her arms around him.

“I’m sorry for the things I said to you today. But I did mean them. You have to be okay with this Andy or else we’ve got bigger problems. You have to trust in me; both on the job and off…that I’ll be there for you. Always. But you have to be there for me too. We have to support each other. Equally. 50/50. I love you…so much. I need your support. I need you.” She reached up and kissed him.

Their mouths met in a fiery splendor as the tension that had been building between them throughout this day exploded. His mouth was hot…hot enough to light a fire inside her, and when he finally broke the kiss; she took him by the hand and led them through the hallway towards their bedroom.

As they walked to their bedroom, her heart beat out a thunderous rhythm. Today had scared her as much as it had scared him. She knew exactly what she was doing and she was intent on showing Andy that the love they shared was all that mattered. She wanted to feel Andy’s hands on her, his lips on her. She wanted to touch him and feel his body take possession of hers.

“Are you sure?” he asked, his voice deep with emotion.

Connie didn’t say a word. Instead she reached up behind her neck and removed the strap that held her sling in place. She then took Andy’s hands in hers and kissed them. He had his answer.

Andy stood before her unbuttoning the buttons of her shirt, his mouth moving hungrily over hers. Within seconds her shirt and bra were on the floor. Her naked breasts were pressed tight against the fabric of his shirt, but she didn’t want contact with the material. She wanted to feel him closer to her.

With her mouth still connected to his, she undid his tie and shirt. Her fingers fumbled and tripped over themselves in her eagerness to undress him. He smiled at her as he helped her undo the last of the shirt buttons, then tore the shirt off and tossed it to the floor.

His hands worked to unbraid her hair from its ponytail as he loosened it from its confines. Once freed, he wrapped his fingers into her hair, tugging her head backward and pressed his mouth against the throbbing pulse point at the base of her throat.

His fingers unwound from her hair and moved to the zipper at her waist. He unzipped her jeans and pulled them down until they were in a heap at her feet. Gently then he picked her up and eased her down on the bed, then stepped back, his eyes intently holding hers, before trailing a series of slow, delicate kisses down the length of her.

He joined her on the bed as their mouths once again sought each other’s. His kiss was demanding, greedy, and Connie met it with a deep hunger of her own. She felt as if she could kiss him for an eternity and even that wouldn’t be long enough.

When he finally broke the kiss and lowered his head, his mouth finding the taut peak of one breast, she cried out in wonder. Her fingernails dug into his back as his hands and mouth left her breasts and trailed down her ribs, across the expanse of her abdomen and lingered at the low cut band of her panties.

After removing her panties, he hesitated for a moment. She didn’t want his hesitation, didn’t want him to tease her. She moved her hips provocatively, felt his swift intake of breath, then his fingers and his mouth were on her, caressing her. Closing her eyes, she gave herself over to those sweet sensations coursing through her. The tension inside her climbed higher and higher. As his hungry mouth probed her tenderly, the sensations became stronger. In and out…in and out. Connie shut her eyes and held his head tighter to that most intimate of places as his tongue continued to probe deeper and deeper. His mouth and tongue were warm and wet. “Oh, God, Andy.” When he touched her like this, she would do anything…anything just to have this feeling stay with her forever.

Connie felt herself go limp. She felt her release approaching and stopped moving, wanting…needing him to go there with her.

She opened her eyes and spoke his name, a whisper of yearning. “Andy, please…I need you.” His lips then took possession of hers as he entered her. For a long moment neither of them moved, as if afraid a single motion would instantly carry them over the edge.

She touched his cheek as she lost herself in him as he moved his hips against hers, taking complete possession of her body, her heart, her soul. He wanted to make each moment, every sensation last as long as possible. But her mouth tasted too sweet, her body was calling to him and he felt all restraint slipping away.

Not yet, his mind pleaded, not wanting it to end, but wanting instead to take her with him to the highest peak of pleasure. Faster and faster they moved together, and he felt her tension rising…building…and when his release came, she cried out his name as he carried her with him over the edge.

“Connie, you okay?” he asked her. His voice was a hoarse whisper.

They untangled and he propped himself up on one arm so he could look at her. Her cheeks were flushed, her lips slightly swollen, and she had tears in her eyes. She’d never looked more lovely to Andy.

“Shh.” She pressed her finger against his lips and laid her head on his shoulder.

“I’m….”

“Don’t,” she whispered. This time she silenced him with a kiss. “I’m more than okay, Andy. For now, just hold me.” She snuggled against him, her breath warm against the hollow of his throat.

They made love that night as if they’d been born for this, for one another. In the aftermath of their passion, Connie wasn’t entirely sure how their kissing had escalated to this point, but she understood why. She’d survived a deadly risk today, and with that realization had come another ---- about the preciousness of life. What they’d just shared was a celebration of life and hope. And that was all that mattered because they were in love for now and forever.

The End
