more appropriate title for a gutter fanfic.
I thought it might be fun for us to see what happened after those two
kisses and after the camera fades to black as Andy and Connie walk off hand in
hand.
I’m sure many of you
wondered what happened next. Here’s my take on what happens next later that
night in Better Laid Than Never and afterwards during the dinner date. Happy

(Dialogue from the last scene at the carnival in “Better Laid Than Never”
Andy and Connie
put Theo carefully on the carousel.
Connie: Ride’em cowboy.
Andy: (nervous
about letting him ride alone):
OK, we’ll stay right
here.
Theo: No I’m fine.
Andy: You okay riding alone?
Theo: Let’s go.
Connie: All right, sweetheart. We’ll be on that bench right over there.
Connie and Andy
make their way over to the bench to sit and wait for him. They sit down enjoying the momentary break.
Connie: Theo really takes you away from it.
Andy: Yeah.
Connie: Oh, is it too late to get him a cotton
candy?
(Connie almost
gets up to leave.)
Andy: Stay here a second. (wanting her undivided
attention)
Theo: (from the
carousel): Hi Daddy. Hi Connie.
They smile and
wave.
Andy: Look if anything happens to me…I want you to
take care of Theo. I mean I’d want it
legal. It wouldn’t be a financial burden on you. That’s all squared away.
If you’re up for that?
Connie: Of course I am.
Theo: (again from the carousel) Hi Daddy. Hi Connie.
Andy: Theo asked if he could call you Mom.
Connie: Do you want him to call me Mom?
Andy: I don’t want to disrespect his mother.
Connie: Well I don’t think it’s being disrespectful Andy. I think Theo would want someone in his life
that he could call Mom. Someone in both
your lives.
Andy: Yeah…you’re probably right.
Then Connie
reached over and kissed him on the lips.
Connie: “That wasn’t so bad, was it?”
Andy: “No.
Not bad at all.” And Andy
reached over and returned the kiss in kind.
Connie pulled away from the kiss, happy and content. He finally gets it she thought.
Connie: Tomorrow night we’re getting a sitter and
you’re coming over to my apartment for dinner.
Andy: Sounds good.
Suddenly Theo
appeared breathless from his ride on the carousel and rushed into both Andy and
Connie’s arms.
Connie (to
Theo): Hey, you have fun?
Theo: “Yeah!”
“Can I have some cotton candy, please?”
Andy: “Yeah, all right.”
Getting the
cotton candy….
Connie (to
Theo): “Look at that…”
As they walked through the carnival, Andy reached his hand down toward her. Connie willingly placed her hand inside his as the three of them weaved their way and walked through the crowded maze of people. Connie looked down at her hand firmly enclosed in Andy’s strong grasp. Crazy Glue couldn’t bond more thoroughly she thought as she glanced down at the hold he had on her hand. They walked in silence together. Andy glanced over at her and smiled. Just this once he’d follow his heart.
One Hour Later
9:00 p.m.
She gazed around the park and listened to
the shouts of laughter and screams coming from the riders of the Tilt-A-Whirl
and the Spider. It had been a wonderful
evening. Especially when Andy had
kissed her. Connie glanced over at her
two guys. Theo had almost drifted off
to sleep in Andy’s arms. Her heart
filled with love for Andy even more as she watched him holding his son. He was such a good man.
As she juggled her newly won stuffed animal
in her arms, she gingerly tugged on Andy’s shirtsleeve. When he turned, she gestured toward the
refreshment stand.
“I’m thirsty.” She told him. “You up for some lemonade?”
“”Two snow cones, one hot dog and a bag of
popcorn weren’t enough for you, eh?” he asked with a grin.
“Don’t be a smart ass.” Connie ruefully looked over at him and
shrugged.
Andy pulled some money from his pants
pocket. “I’ll say one thing, you’re not a cheap date.”
“Maybe not Sipowicz, but I’m a fun
one.” She laughed. “And I’m not the one who blew almost $50
bucks trying to win that oversized bear.”
“No, huh?
And who was it who sighed and said “Oh, he’d look so cute sitting in my
apartment.”
“Guilty.”
She grinned. “And it was kind of you to accommodate me.”
“I’m nothing if not accommodating.” Andy smiled back at her.
She hid her face behind the cuddly blue
bear as she carried it to the car. They
walked in silence all the way back to the car.
Andy with Theo cuddled in his arms and Connie with her big blue bear and
the remaining part of Theo’s cotton candy in tow.
Andy deposited Theo in the back seat of the
car and buckled him in. He barely
stirred as he sleepily asked his father “Are we home yet?”
Andy answered back with a gleam in his eye
“Not yet sport…we’ll be home in about 30 minutes.”
“Okay…wake me when we get there.” And Theo
closed his eyes again and drifted back off to sleep.
Connie glanced back to look at Theo in the
backseat cuddled close together with her big blue bear. Theo was using it as a pillow. She smiled over at Andy as he glanced back
through the rearview mirror. Andy gave
her a knowing smile and took her hand in his as they made their way home for
the night.
On The Drive Home
Approximately 15 to
20 minutes later.
“How’s the pitching arm?” She gave Andy’s upper arm a playful squeeze.
Andy grinned back at her. “I don’t know…I
may need to ice it later on. I might
end up on the DL.”
Connie held Theo’s cotton candy in her lap
as she cuddled close to Andy and idly began picking at it as they made their
way home. Andy’s eyes danced with
amusement as he watched her eating it.
“I love cotton candy.” Taking a bite of the
pink fluff, she closed her eyes and let the sugar dissolve in her mouth.
”Heaven.”
Andy was really amused now. They were stopped at a red light. Andy looked over at her, his eyes pleading.
“Don’t I get some? C’mon…just a little taste.” The laugh lines crinkled around his
eyes. “Please.” His eyes pleaded with her.
“Open up.
I want you to know I don’t share cotton candy with just anyone.” She told him.
Andy complied. She raised her sugar-laden finger and placed it into his waiting mouth,
watching her intently as his lips closed around her finger. Warm, wet and welcoming. A rush of dizziness assaulted her, but that
was like a small wave compared to the heady rush she received when he nibbled
on her fingertip with his teeth. A tidal
wave of sensations coursed through her.
If he kept this up, they’d never make it till their dinner date for
tomorrow night.
Slowly, Connie pulled back, wiping her now
cool finger against her denim jeans.
She let out a deep breathe.
Talk about turning up the heat a few degrees. She wanted to soothe the ache that pounded in every part of her
body. She had waited long enough for
him as it was. Don’t tease me Andy
Sipowicz. She wanted Andy and if he
wasn’t careful, they wouldn’t make it until tomorrow night. Don’t play with fire Sipowicz. He wants to play with fire. Well, two can play at that game. She waited for her opportunity.
Andy knew he was playing with fire but
tonight he just couldn’t seem to help himself.
Once he’d kissed her tonight, it seemed that the floodgates opened and
he just couldn’t help himself. She’d
had a chance to see his playful side. A
side of his personality he rarely showed to anyone.
The car stopped at another red light as
they got closer to Andy’s apartment.
That’s when Connie made her move.
She looked over at him. He smiled back at her.
“Hmmm…looks
like you missed a spot.” She reached
over and with her tongue licked a small smudge of cotton candy from his bottom
lip. Andy didn’t move. Her tongue
lingered there for just a moment but her intent was clear. She was gonna kiss him and she wasn’t taking
no for an answer.
She
plunged her tongue into Andy’s mouth softly gaining entrance. The kiss went on and on until suddenly a
loud beep came from behind. That
startled both of them back into awareness.
Andy reluctantly acquiesced and broke the kiss.
“There…all
better.” Connie said with a gleam in her eye as she pulled away lowering her
hand to rest on his upper thigh. She
left it linger there for the rest of the ride home. Andy looked over at her as if to say this game isn’t finished
yet.
They
tried not to look one another in the eye the rest of the way home. Andy kept his fingers gripped tight to the
steering wheel in a supreme effort to control his emotions. Connie continued to keep her hand resting
lightly on his upper thigh.
She
never flinched or blinked. She just
kept on looking straight ahead. Connie
could feel the heat of his gaze on her but she never moved her hand. She just kept on lightly rubbing the top of
his thigh with her fingertips.
It
took every ounce of strength he possessed right now to not pull this car over
and kiss her senseless. That’s what she
did to him. She made him feel like
losing control.
The
rest of the ride home was rather uneventful.
In a few moments they turned onto Andy’s street. Andy parked the car. As soon as the car stopped, Theo hazily woke
up from his short nap.
“Daddy?”
“Yeah,
sport?” as Andy took him up the apartment stairs.
“Are
we home?”
“Yep.”
“Can
Connie come in and tuck me in?”
“You
bet sweetheart.” Connie replied.
Andy
picked Theo up in his arms and carried him up the steps and into the
apartment. Connie followed.
They
got Theo settled in for the night both dispensing their goodnights and then
Andy tucked Theo in for one final time before closing the door to his
bedroom. Andy then walked out into the
living room to sit down beside Connie.
She sat there on the couch waiting for him with her legs tucked under
her body. She’d taken her shoes off and
made herself right at home in Andy’s apartment.
“He’s
such a sweet kid.” Connie told him as
she laid her head against his chest.
Andy held her and breathed her in.
God it felt good to feel this cherished he thought and to be this
blessed.
“I
had a great time tonight.” She admitted
to him.
“I
did too. Connie…can we talk some more
about tonight?”
“Sure. What’s on your mind?”
“You.
You and me. It’s all I seem to think
about these days. And how much I want
to be with you. You… these feelings
scare the hell out of me.”
Connie
flashed a gentle smile at him. This was
so hard for him. Admitting he had
feelings for her.
“I
just can’t believe you’d actually want to be with me. I’m no prize.”
“I’ll
be the judge of…”
“Let
me finish.” Andy put his finger to her lips. “It’s just that you’ve been so
patient with me. It’s been a long time
since I’ve felt this close to someone.”
“Sylvia?” Connie asked him. Andy nodded. At that
moment, Connie couldn’t have loved him more.
She took her hand and ever so softly touched his temple. He captured her hand.
“It’s
just that I don’t want to screw this up.
It’s like there’s this emotional pull between us and I’m helpless to
stop it.”
“Do
you want to stop it?”
“Hell,
no.” He told her firmly.
“All
right then. Andy, let’s just let nature
take its course and see what happens.”
He
looked over at her and then leaned over and brushed his lips over hers. His hand, already at the nape of her neck,
dug farther into her hair as he shifted positions and slid his tongue across
her lips. She sighed aloud.
She
raised both of her hands to his face and opened her mouth beneath his. The kiss was hot, intense and like nothing
in his previous experience. He lost
track of everything but Connie. He
lifted his head and looked into her soft, blue eyes.
“Andy.” His name was a plea he couldn’t resist. He captured her lips again. Together they tumbled backward against the
pillows. He trapped her slender body
between his thighs and shifted until the heat of his arousal was pressed firmly
at the juncture of her thighs.
He
paused long enough to open his eyes. He
watched her face as he further inflamed her senses and then he ground his hips
against hers.
Her eyes glazed over. “Andy…I need you.”
He
grit his teeth against the combination of pleasure and pain and thrust himself
against her welcoming body yet again.
She uttered a sigh and rotated her hips, causing him to silently curse
the barrier of clothing that separated them.
Then he closed his eyes and pushed deeper.
His
mouth never left hers, his tongue mimicking the erotic motion of their
bodies. She rocked beneath him and
wrapped her arms around his waist, pulling him, needing him closer. Their bodies fit together as one.
Still
separated by layers of clothing, they were both so close to losing
control. Andy hadn’t touched an inch of
her skin, yet he ached to lose himself inside her. The thought amazed him.
He
gentled his kiss in an effort to bring them down from the peak they’d almost
reached. He wanted Connie and she
wanted him. Amazing.
He
allowed himself one last lingering kiss before pulling himself up and away from
her soft, willing body. He left her
entire body throbbing. Need pulsed
through her as she looked over at Andy.
Andy
took her hand in his and put it to his lips.
“I
have no self restraint when it comes to you.”
“Is
that why you pulled back? Heaven knows
I wouldn’t have stopped you.”
“You
scare the hell out of me.”
“What
happened just now”—she gestured back and forth between them—“that was about you
and me. No one else was in the room.”
“I
know.” He replied.
“Andy,
don’t look at me like that.” She said, her voice quivering with emotion.
“Like
what?”
“Like
you’re afraid of me.”
“I’m
not.”
“Aren’t
you?”
“I’m
just afraid of what you make me feel.
I’m afraid to want this all again.
I told you before everytime I reach for something more, it gets taken
from me.” he admitted to her.
“Andy,
I’ll let you in on a little secret. I’m
beginning to fall in love with you. I’m
not going anywhere. All these feelings
are new for me too. It feels good. It feels right. You scare the hell out of me too. But I want this. And I want it with you. Nobody else, okay.”
She
straightened her sweater as she gathered herself to leave. She kissed him again
fleetingly on the temple as she got up from the sofa.
If
he only knew how much she wanted him.
It took everything she had inside her to leave. She gave him a quick kiss goodnight on the
cheek as she left.
“I
had a great time tonight. I’ll see you
tomorrow night.”

The
Next Evening
At
Connie’s Apartment
The
Dinner Date
The
doorbell rang. She headed to get the
door. She swung the door wide open.
“Can
I borrow a cup of sugar? I’m all out.”
Andy gave her a smart ass grin.
“Couldn’t
think of something more original, huh?” she asked.
“Avon
calling.” He advanced two steps into
the apartment. Connie looked like a
vision to him. She wore a pale yellow
cotton sundress. She closed the door
behind him.
She
shook her head. “Try again.”
“How
about this?” He took another two steps forward, closed the door, and met her
lips with a scorching kiss. His mouth
moved over hers with such skill and perfection, she was surprised her legs
still supported her. All she could do
was reach for his shoulders and hold on.
The
kiss was all she’d dreamed about and more.
It ended all too soon. He freed
her with an agonized groan as he reluctantly let her go.
He
went into the kitchen and watched intently as she began to prepare dinner.
“Need
any help?” He asked her as he watched
her cut up the garlic bread for their dinner tonight.
“Nah,
I got it.”
“You
sure. I make a mean salad.” Andy snuck up behind her, wrapping his arms
around her waist and burying his face in the expanse of skin at her neck.
“Okay,
Andy.” She relaxed in his arms as he
insistently nuzzled at her ear. His
hands splayed across her stomach. Every
ounce of willpower he possessed went into keeping them below the round swell of
her breasts. Pace yourself
Sipowicz…you’ve got all night. He
pressed his lower body into her back and was greeted by her soft moan of
pleasure in response.
He
wanted to turn her around and bury himself inside her. He wanted to see her face when he entered
her for the first time. He wanted all
those things and more. Things he
thought he’d never have again.
He
wanted to step back but needed her warmth and closeness for a minute more. Then he’d let her go. He steeled himself to release her, but she
turned. Eyes glazed and face flushed
with desire, she looked unsteady. He
reached out a hand to support her and immediately noticed that her nipples were
drawn tight beneath her dress.
Without
thought he brushed one distended peak with his thumb. She swayed toward him, and damned if her knees didn’t almost
buckle. Control deserted him, and all
good intentions along with it. Any
thoughts he’d had of restraint vanished.
He knelt down and replaced his hand with his mouth, suckling her through
the material of the cotton sundress.
She braced herself by grasping the handle of the stove.
He
bit down lightly. She murmured his name
at the same time her legs gave way.
Andy reached for her, supporting her until she was able to stand on her
own.
“You
keep that up and there won’t be any dinner.” She gently scolded him.
“I
know. I thought maybe we’d skip dinner
and go straight to dessert.”
“You’re
a hazard in the kitchen.”
“Look
who’s talking. Dress like that and
expect results.”
“You
have a salad to make.” She said in an
unsteady voice.
“And
you have a table to set. Now get going
before I get distracted again.”
Connie
didn’t miss the desire in his gaze as she went out into the dining area to set
the table for two.
They
had a lovely dinner for two.
After
dinner, they sat on the couch. Andy put
his arm around her as she cuddled into his embrace. He kissed her softly, gently now. She had expected the hot intensity of last night’s kisses. His tenderness caught her off guard.
Nothing
could have surprised her more at the reverent way he caressed her mouth. He wet his lips with his tongue, then rubbed
his own against hers, soaking up the moisture.
He created a damp path down the side of her neck. She shivered. His thumb traveled the same path as his lips had just seconds
before, drying the moisture and warming her at the same time. The gentleness of the gesture shocked her,
causing a lump to form deep in her throat.
She loved this man.
She
drew a deep breath and waited for the sensual onslaught to continue. His fingers traced the outline of her
mouth. Her body felt alive with need. She ached for him.
She
ran her tongue over her lips, coming into contact with the rough pad of his
thumb. His skin tasted salty and warm,
making her wonder what other tastes and textures awaited her tonight.
Connie
couldn’t wait any longer. She smiled
and placed her hand in his. She then
wrapped her fingers around his.
“Are
you sure?” he asked.
She
nodded. “I’m sure, Andy. I’ve never
been more sure of anything in my life.”
With
his nerves stretched to the breaking point, Andy followed her into the dimly
lit bedroom.
“Did
I give you too much time to think?” She
asked as she hugged him from behind.
She placed a soft kiss on his cheek.
“Maybe.”
He replied.
In
the ensuing silence, he forced his mind to function, and the conclusions he’d
reached were staggering. If he wasn’t
in love with her, he was well on his way.
He
swallowed hard and turned. He took both
her hands in his as she stopped in front of him.
“I
want you to know what you’re getting into.” He told her.
“I
already do,” she whispered. They’d been
moving towards this moment from the beginning…since that night she’d pulled him
out of that bar after Danny’s death.
“I
can’t make any prom…”
She
covered his lips with one finger. “I know, Andy. I know. Andy Sipowicz,
you think too much.” Looking into her
eyes, Andy believed her.
He
backed her towards the large bed that beckoned to them. When her calves reached the platform of the
bed, he stopped and encircled her waist with his hands.
She
smiled and lifted his shirt, her soft hands linking behind his neck. He dipped his head toward her but she caught
him off guard. In one smooth motion,
she wrapped one leg around his and pulled him toward her so they tumbled back
onto the bed together. The mattress rocked
beneath them.
“Think
you’re so clever, eh?” he asked, brushing his lips against hers.
“Nope.
I know I am.” She smiled at him.
He
kissed her again letting her fill the empty spaces deep inside of him. To keep from crushing her, he rolled to his
side and propped himself up on one elbow.
Sealing his mouth over hers, he entwined his tongue and feasted on her
until he could barely breathe.
They’d
never done more than this, yet each kiss contained more power than the
last. Her hand came between them and
caressed his arousal through the rough denim of his jeans. His body jerked involuntarily at her touch
and the bed swirled beneath them.
“Oh,
no you don’t. Not yet.” He removed her hand and grasped her fingers
with his own. “Not if you want this to
last.”
“I
want,” she murmured. Her eyes fastened
on his face. He removed a strand of
blonde hair from her cheek and kissed her again.
“So
do I.” Reaching behind her neck, he
opened the two buttons that held the top of her dress in place. He watched, mesmerized, as he drew her top
down. The dress fell to her waist and
he sucked in a deep breath.
She
felt wet heat on one breast. He leaned over her lavishing his undivided
attention on her hardened nipple. He
suckled her, nipping and soothing with alternate breaths. Heat traveled to the juncture of her thighs.
She
ran her fingers through his hair while enjoying the rasp of his moustache
brushing against the sensitive skin on her chest. Andy lifted his head long enough to turn to the other breast,
giving it equal attention. She felt
only a moment of cool air on the spot his mouth had abandoned before his hand
began equally skillful maneuvers. The
muscles in her stomach clenched as he rolled one nipple between his thumb and
forefinger, while working the other one with his mouth.
Unable
to think, Connie lay her head back on the pillow and gave herself up to the
incredible sensations of she and Andy together.
He’d
touched a place deep inside of her.
She’d touched a place deep inside of him. More than their bodies were involved in the act that was about to
happen. Much more.
He
straddled her with his legs. His
erection nudged at her, barely easing the ache of desire for her. She lifted her hips and he eased into her
slowly at first and then harder, pushing inside with one hard thrust. She felt him deep inside her. Andy filled her body but also her
heart. She knew it the same way she
knew nothing in her life would ever be the same again. He paused to kiss her, working his tongue in
her mouth as if searching for something greater than both of them.
He
began to move inside her, and soon his gentle movements weren’t enough. She wanted him deeper and wanted more from
him than she’d ever thought possible.
The bed rocked in time with their movements. Enclosed in Connie’s warmth, Andy fought against feelings so
intense he thought they might drown him.
She murmured his name and wrapped her long legs around his waist,
forcing him as hard and as deep as he could reach.
He
felt her contract around him, heard her cry out, and any control he had
maintained shattered along with her. Surging
into her, he drove higher. Andy let go,
losing himself inside her, the way he’d always known he would.
************************************************
Later
that night…
Connie
lay in Andy’s arms but sleep eluded her.
She listened to his deep breathing and cuddled closer to his warmth and
tried to not think about anything but the miracle of them being together.
She
pressed a kiss against the back of his warm hand. That startled Andy into awareness. His hand reached over and cupped her face and he brought their
lips together. He kissed her
deeply. She leaned into him, brushing
her breasts against his chest.
“Connie
McDowell…I think I’m falling in love with you. He told her as he entered her.
This
time they came together in an explosive combination of want and need. He climaxed first and she followed. Their bodies entwined, Andy still inside
her, she rested her head against his cheek and they both finally fell back to
sleep.
The
late spring sun shining through the window woke Andy first. Connie’s long legs were entangled around his,
reminding him that there was beauty in this harsh world.
God
had given him many challenges in his life over the last nine years but Andy
didn’t question his fate now. Those
things had all brought him to this moment and to this woman.
He
stretched his arms over his head, letting his hand come to rest on her bare
breast. It had been a long time since
he’d ever felt so at peace.
Life
was good. After all, he had the woman
he loved by his side.
The
End
