Kitchen
Andy and Robbie are getting settled in the kitchen. Andy has turned off Connie’s alarm clock in order for her to get some much-needed sleep. This is bonding time for Andy and Robbie. Andy is holding and talking to Robbie as he mixes him some cereal and formula. Andy places Robbie in his infant seat to feed him.
Andy: Alright big guy…open wide…got your favorite here, oatmeal…good stuff.
Robbie looks at his father with a furrowed brow. Andy offers a spoon full of cereal to Robbie. He wants no parts of it. Andy tries again and gets the same reaction. Andy looks around as if someone may be watching them.
Andy: Alright…but this is the last time, you hear…
Andy proceeds to make his best airplane noise. Robbie responds much better this time.
Andy: Atta boy…eat this and you’ll grow big and strong. (Pointing the spoon at Robbie) You know…I think we got us a case of the tail waggin’ the dog…enjoy it, cause it won’t last.
Whenever Andy would feed Robbie he would fill him in on the days events or maybe read him something from the sports page. Whatever the case maybe, Robbie always responded well to his father’s voice. Probably all those nights he spent talking to Connie’s belly.
Andy: Now, today me and Jr. are goin’ over to question a fella out at Rykers. There’s a place you want to stay away from…(Looking deeply at Robbie) promise me…you’ll never do something to land you there?
Andy waits for some sort of response from Robbie. Connie is now standing in the doorway watching them.
Andy: Promise me…
Robbie kicks and lets out a squeal.
Andy: Ok then, like I was sayin’…
Connie: What are you making him promise now?
Andy: To stay outta Rykers. What are you doin’ up? I thought I turned off your alarm clock?
Connie: (Getting a cup of coffee) You did and thank you. (Sitting down with Andy and Robbie) Its picture day at Theo’s school and I wanted to make sure he wears the outfit I picked out for him.
Andy: (Still feeding Robbie) What, you weren’t happy with last years pictures?
Connie: No as a matter of fact I wasn’t. I don’t think a ripped football jersey makes for a nice picture. I still don’t know how he got it out of the house without me seeing it. (Turning her attention to Robbie) Hey sweetie…what daddy make you this morning…ummm oatmeal…yum yum yum…(pretending to eat his toes).
Andy and Connie did so enjoy this time alone with their creation. It was a bit difficult to make sure everyone got the attention they needed. They did their best as not to show favoritism towards one child or another. Theo with his being ten years old problems…Michelle with her two year old issues…and Robbie just being Robbie. He is a good baby. For being the offspring of two thick headed, single-minded parents, so far, he’s a good baby.
Connie: (Finishing her coffee) Ok boys…let me get my shower and then I’ll get Theo dressed for school.
Andy: Hey…c’mer.
Connie: (Yawning) What?
Andy stands to meet her. He places his strong yet gentle arms around her waist. Connie places her arms around his neck.
Andy: (Kissing her nose then her forehead) Mornin’
Connie: (Smiling) Mornin’.
Robbie gives out a squeal and they turn their attention to him. He smiles back at them while he kicks his legs and waves his arms.
Andy: (To Connie) Don’t forget…we have a date this week.
Connie: Oh, I am so looking forward to that…where we going?
Andy: It’s up to you…wherever you want…its your night.
Connie: (Kissing his cheek) I can’t wait…just an hour alone would be great.
As Connie leaves the kitchen, Andy gives her bottom a tender pat. She throws a glance over her shoulder at him and smiles.
Andy: (Returning his attention to Robbie) So…like I was sayin’…
10am
15th squad room
Connie and Rita enter an empty squad room. John is just finishing up a phone call as Rita replaces the radio in the holder.
Connie: (To John) Where is everyone?
John: Detectives Medavoy and Jones are taking a witness statement in the coffee room…Detectives Sipowicz and Clark are on their way back from Rykers (handing Rita a message slip) the boss is up in Anti-Crime and you have someone waiting for you in the pokey.
Connie: (Looking a bit confused) Me? Who is it?
John: She wouldn’t say. She did look familiar to me. I offered for her to sit here on the bench, but she wanted to speak to you privately.
Rita: (To Connie) Expecting someone?
Connie: Not that I can think of.
Rita: You want me to go with you?
Connie: No I’ll be fine.
Rita: Ok…I’ll be up in Anti-Crime getting those pictures together.
Connie: Good…I’ll meet you up there.
As Connie walks down the hall to the pokey, something pings at the bottom of her stomach. She hesitates just before opening the door. She unsnaps the top of her holster and places her hand on the butt of the gun. She slowly opens the door and sees a young girl standing with her back to Connie looking out the window.’
Connie: (Standing in the doorway) Can I help you?
The young girl turns to face Connie. Suddenly, there isn’t enough air in the room. Connie tries to hide her shock, but it isn’t working too well. Standing there before her is Jennifer. Connie quickly closes and locks the door.
Jennifer: I sure hope so…surprise!
Connie: What? What are you…
Jennifer: What am I doing here? That’s a fine thing to say to your long lost daughter.
Connie: ( Trying to focus) Jennifer…you got to give me a minute here…
Jennifer: Sorry.
Connie slowly walks over to the table and takes a seat. Connie literally shakes her head in an effort to refocus. All she can hear is the voice of Richard Beck, Jennifer’s father, telling Connie if she didn’t stay away he would slap her with a restraining order.
Jennifer: You ok? Want me to go get someone?
Connie: No I’m ok…just a little thrown off is all. Sit down. What’s going on?
Jennifer: (Sitting across from Connie) Two things: one…I’ve been emancipated…and two…I want to come and live with you.
Connie’s eyes widen so much you would think they were going to fall out of her head.
Connie: Pardon me? Wha..why?
Jennifer: Cause you’re my mom.
Connie: Jennifer…back up here…one thing at a time…Emancipated?
Jennifer: Yeah you know…set free by the courts?
Connie: I know what emancipated means…but why?
Jennifer: My parents are going through a divorce. Now they have one less thing to divvy up…one less thing to argue over.
Connie: And they just allowed this to happen? No fight to keep you?
Jennifer: I’m telling you they are so wrapped up in who gets the townhouse and who gets the summerhouse. I didn’t want any part of it. I didn’t want to be a pawn in their games. My girlfriend Gwen, her father is a child’s advocate lawyer. I went to him and he helped me file the nessary paper and saw me through the process. I don’t think they even noticed…one more paper to sign.
Over the initial shock of seeing her daughter, Connie now was busy trying to process the information Jennifer had just given her. Connie had always dreamed of this day…when her daughter would return to her. She never in her wildest dreams thought it would be under circumstances like this. She thought when Jennifer had turned 18, perhaps she would reach out for her. But then again, Connie never saw herself married with three children under the age of ten. Connie is ready to shift right into detective mode, but thinks better of it. She didn’t want this to turn adversarial. It was obvious Jennifer has had enough of that. Connie takes another few seconds to digest the news and decide on how to deal with Jennifer.
Jennifer: Helllllooooo anyone home in there?
Connie: You just can’t blow someone out of the water like that and expect them to respond.
Jennifer: I just thought you’d be…I don’t know…ready?
Connie: You’ve had time to adjust yourself to this situation…I’ve had two minutes.
Jennifer: You must have always known I’d come back.
Connie: I’d hoped you would come back…
Jennifer: I wanted to come back two years ago.
Jennifer is distracted by a small piece of scotch tape on the table. With her thumb she tries to move it while she talks to Connie.
Jennifer: After I left you that night in the diner, I went home and had a huge blowout with my parents. After two hours of a lot of screaming and yelling and not a whole lot getting accomplished, I locked myself in my room. Later that night I overheard my father telling my mother that he had come to see you and told you he was getting a restraining order on you…is that why you sent me away?
Connie: That was one of the reasons. There were a few others.
Jennifer: Like what?
Connie: Like how I went about getting into your life was all wrong and disrespectful to you parents.
Jennifer: You busted me for smokin’ pot…how can that be wrong or disrespectful?
Connie: The way I went about it was wrong…spying on you. I just wanted to make sure you were ok. I could have gone about it differently is all I’m saying. (Long pause) I just can’t believe your parents would just let you go like that.
Jennifer: I could have run away. I’m sure someone would have found me sooner or later. There’s only so many places to hide in this city when your real mom is a detective and your adoptive parents have money.
*** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** ***
Andy and Jr. have returned from Rykers. Andy sees Rita coming down from Anti-Crime.
Andy: Howzit goin’?
Rita: Good.
Andy: Where’s Connie?
Rita: I don’t know. She was going to meet with someone in the pokey. John, is Connie back yet?
John: No, I haven’t seen her.
Andy hangs up his coat and heads to the pokey. He goes to open the door only to find it locked.
Andy: Connie…you in there?
Connie: Yes I am.
Andy: Open the door.
Connie: Not now Andy.
Andy: You ok?
Connie: Yes…
Andy: Then open the door.
Connie: NOT NOW ANDY!
Andy goes to the observation room to see what is going on. He cannot believe what he is seeing. Unconsciously, he flips on the intercom.
Jennifer: Who was that?
Connie: Never mind that. You gotta know I’m going to talk to your parents. I really hope this isn’t a result of a fight about you cleaning your room.
Jennifer: Go ahead. Good luck getting to see them. I’m sure they could squeeze you in between appointments with their lawyers. Tell them I said hello.
Connie takes a long hard look at Jennifer. It was like looking in a mirror when she was 17. Attitude. Body language. Physically. She was looking at herself from a lifetime ago. She was also remembering what she herself was like at 17. Most of her wild oats had been sewn. She was starting to get over the hurt and anger of what her parents had done. She was ready to start a new life at college. She was ready to break free cause she knew where she was going and what she was going to do with the rest of her life. One look across the table and she knew it was the same for Jennifer. Funny how a life can replay itself.
Andy has mixed emotions about what he is seeing and hearing. He doesn’t know the full story. He keeps his emotions in check for now and continues to listen.
Connie: (Handing her paper and pen) Write down all the number I can reach your parents at.
Jennifer writes down all the information Connie will need to track down her parents. Connie has the distinct feeling she is being watched. She casually walks over to the two-way mirror pretending to fix her hair. Andy knows he’s been caught. She stands in front of the mirror with her hands on her hips letting him know she knows he’s there. He folds his arms across his chest and stairs back at her. As if she could actually see him, she folds her arms across her chest and stairs daggers back at him.
Jennifer: (Looking up from her writing) What are you doing over there?
Connie: (Never taking her eyes off the mirror) Just making sure we have our privacy.
Andy: (Into the intercom) Fine.
Jennifer: Who was that?
Connie: Never mind…
Jennifer: Was that your boss? Are you going to get in trouble?
Connie: (Taking a second to answer) Kinda sorta…not exactly.
Connie takes one more look in the mirror before returning her attention to Jennifer.
Connie: Where you staying these days?
Jennifer: With friends.
Connie: That’s gotta be hard…moving around like that. What about school? Why aren’t you in school today?
Jennifer: Whoa there cop mom…
Connie: Cop mom? You have no idea…I’m just getting started…
Jennifer: Sorry…just slow down for a second. I’ve been staying with Gwen and her family. Her mom isn’t too thrilled about the situation. So tonight I’m moving to Chloe’s.
Connie: And her parents don’t mind?
Jennifer: No, not really.
Connie: What about school?
Jennifer: I was off today for an in service day.
Connie: What?
Jennifer: Report cards come out at the end of the week. The teachers use this day to get all their marks and stuff done.
Connie: How are you doing in school?
Jennifer: Well…let’s see…all A’s except for Chemistry…got a B+. I was accepted to NYU next fall. I have a full boat…I had to fight to keep that.
Connie: Fight? With whom?
Jennifer: My father. His point was that if it wasn’t for him sending me to private schools, I never would have so well. But as I explained to the judge, I did all the work…I put all the time and effort into studying and I earned that scholarship.
Connie: Really?
Jennifer: Yes. And if I do come and live with you that would be one less thing you would need to worry about. I have two jobs…one after school at a law firm…mostly gopher stuff around the office and on the weekends I work at The Gap. I can and do pull my own weight. When I was emancipated, I was also cut off from any money from my parents…but that comes with the decisions I’ve made. No problem.
Connie: (Thinking to herself) Oh my God…she is me.
Jennifer: So…what do you say…can I come and live with you?
Connie: Jennifer, there’s other people involved in my life right now. I’ll have to talk it over with them and take their thoughts and feeling into consideration.
Jennifer: So that’s a no.
Connie: Did I say that?
Jennifer: Sounded that way to me.
Connie: Listen…when I last saw you, I was single and living on my own. I’m now married and have three kids under the age of ten. All I am saying is just give me a few days…to talk to and prepare the people in my life.
Jennifer: Your married?
Connie: Yes.
Jennifer: With three kids?
Connie: Yes…is there a problem here?
Jennifer: No…I think it’s awesome…I have family…a real family?
Connie: (Smiling) Yes Jennifer…you have a family.
Jennifer: Oh, this is sooo cool. I totally understand where you are coming from. (Reaching for pen and paper) Here’s Chloe’s home phone number…she can’t get calls after ten…I’ll give you her cell number, you can call that anytime. (Getting up to leave) I really hope this all works out. Call me and let me know what’s going on.
Connie: I hope it works out too.
Jennifer: I just want to be a normal kid…with a normal family. I want to get to know you. I want to know where I came from.
Connie: Well like I said…I have people to talk to, namely your parents.
Jennifer: (Hugging Connie and whispering to her) Is it too soon to say I love you?
Connie: Never.
Jennifer: (Taking half a set back) Well, I do.
Connie: Me too.
Jennifer: Ok, I’ll be at Gwen’s till six…after that you can reach me at Chloe’s
Connie: Jennifer…there’s a lot to be done here.
Jennifer: I know…I just thought…if maybe you wanted to talk…or whatever…
Connie: Good then.
Connie walks Jennifer to the top of the stairs and says good-bye. Andy allows for what he thinks is enough time for Connie not to see him come out of the observation room. WRONG. She catches him coming from the room, from the corner of her eye.
Andy: (To himself) SHIT!
They walk towards each other.
Connie: (Standing in front of Andy) We need to talk.
Andy: Whenever you’re ready.
Connie: How’s your case going?
Andy: Nothing Jr. can’t handle…what about yours?
Connie: I think Rita will be able to handle it without me. I have a little lost time I could use. Let me talk to Rita for a minute?
Andy: I’ll go see Jr.. Meet you outside?
Connie: Yeah…sounds good.
Half an hour later they meet outside the stationhouse. They grab a couple of sodas and soft pretzels and make their way to the playground. Once settled, Connie tells Andy everything Jennifer had told her. Andy listens without interruption.
Connie: So, what do you think?
Andy: (Choosing his words very carefully) I think a meeting with the parents is in order. If her story holds up…we move forward.
Connie didn’t know what to expect from Andy. In her heart, she knew for a fact Andy would stand by her decision. She half expected to have to fight for it. His resistance to change is what had her worried.
Connie: (Looking deeply into Andy’s eyes & thinking to herself) I love this man…God help me…I love this man. (Smiling at him) Ok…who are you and what have you done with Andy Sipowicz?
Andy: (Laughing out loud) Keep you guessin’ do I?
Connie: Yeah…
Andy: Good…look, she’s your daughter. This is something you’ve always wanted. And don’t say it ain’t…cause I know. I just don’t want you to get hurt is all.
Connie: How’s that?
Andy: (Clearing his throat) All’s I’m thinkin’ is…what if in say…six months she gets board with the idea of family, or rules, or even work…what then? Where she gonna go? Where does that leave you? Are you sure you want to open yourself up to something like this?
Connie finishes her pretzel and thinks over what Andy has just said. Leave it to him to show her the glass is half-empty. This is a good thing for her. She didn’t think about things the same as Andy did. Andy has caused her to put on the emotional breaks. All she wanted was to take Jennifer in right here…right now.
Andy: (Taking her hand into his) Look…I couldn’t be happier for you. You’re getting your second chance. I know how good that feels. I am not tellin’ you to not invite this kid into your…our life. I’m just sayin’ don’t get too far ahead of yourself…don’t get your expectations too high…and end up getting your heart stomped on.
Connie: (Turning to face him) You said this would happen someday. You told me that night in your kitchen…you said when she was ready she would make a move. Damnit if you weren’t right.
Andy: (Shrugging his shoulders) Lucky guess.
Connie: No, I think there’s more to it then that.
Andy: Whatever…(taking a sip of his soda) You call the parents yet?
Connie: No…I wanted to talk to you first. I wanted to be sure you were ok with the idea of Jennifer maybe moving in with us.
Andy: I’m fine…I just worry ‘bout you is all.
Connie: I’m fine…I can handle it.
Andy: Yeah, huh?
Connie smiles at him. She knows what he meant by that comment. It was in reference to the last time Connie had dealings with Jennifer.
Connie: This is not like last time.
Andy: (Nodding in agreement) You’re right, I know…its bigger…which means the hurt could be bigger.
Connie: Through my tears and mistakes…with all this…you’ve been there for me. I’m glad I have you here…beside me. I’d be lost without your shoulders.
Andy: I can’t think of a better place to be. (Clearing his throat) You, ah, want me with you when you talk to the parents?
Connie: Absolutely.
Andy: I’ll be there.
Connie: Thanks.
They walk through the schoolyard hand in hand. Once they hit the sidewalk, unwillingly, they let go of each other. Andy walks Connie to the car.
Connie: Tell Rita if she needs any help to call me.
Andy: Ok.
Connie: What time do you think you’ll be home?
Andy: (Looking at his watch) I have a few 5’s to finish up…about 3 or 4 I guess.
Connie: Ok…I’ll see you then.
Andy: Drive carefully.
Connie: I love you too.
Andy returns to his desk and starts his paper work. It is an unusually quiet day in the squad…which he is grateful for. When Connie arrived home, she started to make the nessary phone calls. After working her way through the maze of different phone numbers and dealing with the lawyers, she got Mrs. Beck to finally agree to meet with her tomorrow at 9am or so at the station house. Mr. Beck was another story. First he refused to take her calls. When he heard his soon to be ex-wife agreed to meet with Connie, he agreed to meet with her. Then he called to cancel. He called again to make other arrangements for another day, then canceled again. Connie knew what he was doing…he was trying to wear her down. He had no idea of who he was dealing with. If Connie wanted something bad enough, she would get it. She tried one last time and he agreed to meet with her on Wednesday afternoon at Tony’s Bar & Grill on Lexington Avenue. That being done, she called Andy to fill him in. She then asked to speak to Rita. If Connie was going to “drop out” for a few days, she thought Rita had a right to know. They made arrangements to meet for breakfast the next morning. She asked Rita to tell Andy to bring home milk and bread.
Tuesday
8:30am
Squad room
Connie and Rita return from breakfast to prepare for their day.
Connie: I promise…I’ll find a way to make this up to you.
Rita: Connie really…when I was going through all that stuff with Don…you covered for me…here’s my chance to pay you back. Just promise me one thing…if there’s anything I can do to help…you’ll let me know.
Connie: (Hugging Rita) I will and thanks.
T-Rod enters the squad room and sees Rita and Connie hugging.
T-Rod: Everything ok?
Connie: Yeah…
Rita: Girl stuff.
T-Rod: How’s the case coming?
Connie: (Looking to Rita for help) Good…
T-Rod: Was that an answer or a question?
Connie: Answer…good.
Rita: We’re waiting for the phone dumps to come back. Meanwhile, we’ll be going out to recanvis the area. We’re just getting our thoughts together.
T-Rod: (Looking at Rita) Keep me posted.
Rita: Right boss.
Andy and Jr. enter the squad room along with Greg and Baldwin. They hang up their coats and get ready to bring T-Rod up to speed on their cases. Andy and Jr. go to see T-Rod first.
Jr.: …so that’s where we’re at.
Andy: Yeah, we need to get in touch with a neighbor to see if this mopes alibi holds up. We’ll swing by there later today.
T-Rod: Ok…(as they are leaving his office) Andy…got a second?
Andy: Yeah…what’s up?
T-Rod: Everything ok with Connie?
Andy: (Caught off guard) Yeah. Fine. Why?
T-Rod: She doesn’t seem 100%.
Andy: (Rubbing his head and clearing his throat) Want me to talk to her?
T-Rod: No…that’s my job. I was just wondering is all.
Andy: New baby…new house…she’s got a full plate. I’ve been doin’ my best to help her.
T-Rod: I don’t doubt that…so just chalk it up to readjustment?
Andy: There you go…readjustment.
T-Rod: Andy…I’m not lookin’ to squeeze anyone’s shoes…I just like to know what’s goin’ on with my detectives.
Andy returns to his desk. Jr. is in the coffee room. Connie is at her desk.
Connie: Everything ok?
Andy: Boss is worried about you.
Connie: I’m fine. (Pausing to think) Oh…
Andy: What?
Connie: (Sliding her chair over so she can whisper) He walked in this morning just after I finished telling Rita what was going on. We were hugging.
Andy: Yeah, huh?
Connie: (Rolling back to her desk) Almost forgot…can’t be a girl in the squad room.
Andy: Connie…he’s just lookin’ out for you.
Connie: I know…I know…
Andy: What time is Mrs. Beck due?
Connie: In about 45 minutes or so. You ok with that…time wise?
Andy: Yep.
Connie: Thanks.
At 9:45 Christine Beck introduces herself to John. He asks her to take a seat on the bench while he goes to find Connie. She is in the coffee room.
Connie: Thanks John. (Walking out together) Hey, by the way, where’s the boss?
John: He had to go down to 1PP…he should be back around noon.
Connie: Have you seen Andy?
John: I think I saw him heading up to Anti-Crime. Would you like me to go get him?
Connie: Please, that would be a big help.
They walk out to the catching area together. Connie and Mrs. Beck return to the coffee room.
Connie: Thank you for agreeing to meet with me.
C.B.: No problem.
Andy: Sorry…I had something up stairs.
Connie: Mrs. Beck, this is my husband, Andy Sipowicz.
Andy: Howzitgoin’?
C.B.: I guess Jennifer has been in touch with you?
Connie: Yes she was.
C.B.: What did she tell you?
Connie: That she’s been emancipated.
C.B.: Did she tell you why?
Connie: Because of the divorce.
Andy: And what we’re not understandin’ is why neither of you put up a fight to keep her. Whaddya to busy decidin’ who gets what?
Connie puts her hand on Andy’s arm and gives it a squeeze to settle him down. She doesn’t want this to turn ugly.
C.B.: Is that what she told you?
Connie: Partly.
C.B.: I just didn’t think she would go through with it.
Andy: What were you doin’…playin’ chicken with the kids emotions?
C.B.: I hardly think so detective. Jennifer has a way of over dramatizing things sometimes.
Andy gives Christine Beck his best “what the fuck was that” look. Connie catches him and this time she squeezes his knee before he can say anything else.
Connie: I just don’t understand why you would take a chance of loosing her like that.
C.B.: Truth is…we started loosing her two years ago. It was right after you “found” her.
Connie: So…this is my fault?
C.B.: Its no ones fault detective. I knew this day was coming. I knew sooner or later she would leave. From the day they put her in my arms…I knew I was on borrowed time. After a few years, I put that thought out of my head…or at least I let myself believe I did. When she turned ten years old…we told her she was adopted. I started from that day on to prepare myself for her leaving. I really thought she’d stay until she was 18. I guess the divorce was just her way of getting out. I really do miss her…I love her with all my heart. But if she didn’t want to stay…I couldn’t force her. I just hope she’s well and safe.
Andy: You didn’t think this was just maybe her way of getting your attention?
C.B.: Oh, so now you’re an expert on the mind of an adoptive child? You haven’t a clue what its like. You see them through everything…colic, teething, cuts and scrapes. The first day of school…the first everything. All the while you know someday…someday they’re going to want to know where they came from…who the “real” parents are.
Connie: All parents…adoptive and natural go through this. We…you do all the work, pace the floors at night when their sick, chase the monsters from under their bed. You show them the difference between right and wrong…knowing someday they are going to leave you. And when they do, you hope you’ve instilled in them what they are going to need to make a life for themselves. You live your life…and your child learns how to live a life. You did a wonderful job.
C.B.: And now you get to reap the benefits of that.
Andy: No…Jennifer gets to reap from that.
Mrs. Beck looks at both Andy and Connie. Connie can see the hurt in her eyes. From one mother to another.
Connie: You will always have a place in her life. I will make sure of that.
C.B.: It’s me who should be saying that to you.
Connie: Then why didn’t you fight?
C.B.: Because I’m weak. She’s so strong. (Looking deeply at Connie) I can see now where she gets it from.
Connie looks away from her and over to Andy. This time, Andy places his hand on her knee and gives it a squeeze. Not for any other reason other than to say I’m here…I got your back.
C.B.: How is Jennifer? Where is she staying these days?
Connie: She seems fine. She’s staying at her friends’ house. Mrs. Beck, Jennifer wants to move in with us.
C.B.: (Taking a moment to think) I’m glad. Least she won’t be bouncing form house to house. She needs stability right now…I just can’t…I don’t have it in me…to fight.
Connie: Your fighting in you divorce…how is Jennifer different?
C.B.: It’s the lawyers who do the fighting. I just don’t have it in me…never did.
Connie: If you don’t mind me asking…why are you divorcing?
C.B.: Irreconcilable differences…at least that’s what the papers say. A fancy way of saying I don’t love you any more I guess. She’s all I have…had left in my life. She was my reason for getting out of bed in the morning. (Gathering her belongings) If there’s nothing else…I’ll be leaving.
Connie: Thank you…for all you have done…for coming in and being so open with us.
C.B.: When you see Jennifer, tell her I said hello and that I love her. Please take good care of her.
Andy: Absolutely.
Connie: Can I give you our phone number…just in case you want to talk with Jennifer or us?
C.B.: I’d rather Jennifer make the first move in that direction.
Andy and Connie walk Mrs. Beck to the top of the stairs and say good-bye. Connie heads right for the locker room, Andy follows. She locks the door leading to the squad room as he locks the door to Anti-Crime.
Connie: (Turning to look at Andy) What am I doing? What am I getting us into?
Andy: (Holding out his arms to her) C’mer.
Slowly she walks into his arms where he holds her securely. She begins to cry. He places his hand on the back of her head and gives it a kiss. He’ll hold her until she is done crying. He can feel her getting weak against him. He holds her tighter in hopes she will feel his strength. He leads her over to the bench in front of the lockers. They sit down holding on to each other.
Andy: (As delicately as possible) Are you sure you want to go through with this?
Connie: (Through her tears) What choice do I have? Should I let her wonder the streets…going from house to house? That’s no way to live.
Andy: There’s always choices. She can still be a part of your life.
Connie: (Pulling back to look at him) I couldn’t do that. Knowing she’s out there somewhere. Mrs. Beck was right…she needs stability. I can do that now. We can do it together…right?
Andy: Absolutely.
Connie: I mean before, I was 15. A kid myself. What the hell did I know about raising a child? (Andy thinks to himself while Connie continues) The decision that was made for me tore my heart in two. But I knew, later, it was what was best for her. At the time I couldn’t be the mom she needed.
Andy: Connie…are you doin’ this outta guilt? Cauz if you are…that’s not gonna work. Not for you. Not for her.
Connie: What do you mean?
Andy: Are you doin’ this because you feel guilty…for not bein’ there before?
Andy takes a good long hard look at Connie. Right now, he’s thinking maybe she’s in denial of the guilt factor. He feels its playing a major role in her decision making.
Connie: My only motive for doing this…for even considering this…is so I can be with my daughter. To get to know her and be even a small part of her life. There’s no hidden agenda here Andy. I know I could never make up for that lost time. I will always feel guilty…I know that…I’ve had time and space to deal with that. That’s off the table.
That’s the answer he wanted to hear from her.
Andy: Good then. I just didn’t want that cloudin’ your judgement.
Rita knocks at the door.
Rita: Connie? The boss is back and wants to us in his office.
Connie: Hold on…(She unlocks the door) C’mon in.
Rita: You ok?
Andy: (Clearing his throat) I’ll catch up with you later. (Holding Connie’s hand) You better?
Connie: Yeah…you’ve given me more to think about. (Giving him a kiss on the cheek) Thanks. (To Rita) Better fill me in while I clean up.
10pm
Sipowicz house
Kitchen
Theo and Michelle are down for the night. Robbie on the other hand is keeping his parents company. Robbie just can’t seem to get enough to eat these days. Connie is dancing with him on her hip while Andy warms a bottle for him.
Andy: He eats any more today, he’ll explode.
Connie: That’s cause he’s a growing boy…ain’t that right (kissing Robbie's cheek) Shall we dance some more?
Connie continues to rock back and forth with Robbie on her hip.
Andy: All right…break it up…break it up…time to eat.
Connie: (Handing Robbie over to Andy) You guys have a good time. I’ll be up in a bit.
Andy and Robbie head up to the bedroom while Connie stays to clean up. She is thinking of calling Jennifer just to see how she is doing. She looks through the papers Jennifer gave her the other day and finds Chloe's phone numbers. She looks at the clock and sees its after ten. She dials up the cell phone number.
Chloe: Yo…what up?
Connie: Chloe?
Chloe: Yeah…
Connie is suddenly at a loss as to how to introduce herself.
Connie: It’s…it’s…Connie. Is Jennifer there?
Chloe: Oh, I’m sorry…yeah, hold on she’s right here.
Connie can hear some movement and then a knock on a door.
Chloe: Jen…it’s you mom.
Jennifer: Chloe…I told you if she calls I’m not here.
Chloe: Chill…its your real mom…spaz queen.
Jennifer: Oh…sorry…Hello?
Connie: Everything ok?
Jennifer: Yeah, just a little miscommunication…what’s up?
Connie: I met with you mother today…
Jennifer: And…
Connie: And it went well. She’s worried about you.
Jennifer: Doubt it.
Connie: Jennifer…she told me to tell you she loves you. (Silence…Connie waits for a response)…Jennifer?
Jennifer: Here…
Connie: You ok?
Jennifer: Yeah…
Connie: What’s wrong?
Jennifer: It’s just…she hasn’t…told me that in a long time.
Now there is silence on Connie’s part. What is one to say to that? Connie wanted to say it to Jennifer, but didn’t want to seem opportunistic of her venerability.
Connie: Well…she does.
Jennifer: Whatever.
Connie: I’m here if you want to talk.
Jennifer: You want to meet and get coffee or something?
Connie: Sure.
Jennifer: Now?
Connie: Jennifer…its 10:30 at night…you have school tomorrow.
Jennifer: Oh, my, God…you are such a mom.
Connie: (Choosing to take that as compliment) Thank you. We could get together tomorrow morning if you want…before school?
Jennifer: Sounds good. There’s a coffee shop right by school on 3rd Avenue.
Connie: Yeah…I know it.
Jennifer: Say…7:30?
Connie: I’ll be there.
Jennifer: Cool…I guess I’ll see you then…and umm…thanks for calling.
Connie: See you tomorrow…night.
Jennifer: Night.
After Connie hangs up she goes to check on Andy and Robbie. Andy’s eyes are at half-mast. Robbie has his face nestled in Andy’s neck. What a sight these two are. She gives them each a kiss as she takes Robbie and places him in his crib.
Andy: (Half-awake) Where you been?
Connie: I called Jennifer.
Andy: What’s up?
Connie: Nothing…I was just filling her in. We’re meeting for breakfast tomorrow.
Andy: Sounds good.
He looks at Connie and sees her wheels are spinning. He rubs his face in an attempt to wake himself up. If there’s something on her mind he wants to be awake if she needs him.
Andy: Hey…you ok?
Connie: Yeah…I’m gonna grab a quick shower, then I’ll be in.
Andy: Sure.
As she heads to the bathroom, Andy returns downstairs to lock up for the night. Back upstairs, he checks in on Theo and Michelle on last time before heading off to bed. He gets himself settled in bed waiting for Connie. He grabs a magazine and starts flipping through it looking for something to hold his attention. As he is about to give up, Connie returns.
Andy: Hey…that was quick.
Connie: We need to talk…
7am
Sipowicz home
Connie is getting ready to leave when the phone rings.
Connie: Hello?
Jennifer: Hi. It’s me.
Connie: What’s up?
Jennifer: Me and Chloe stayed up late last night watching a movie and talking and now we overslept and we’re running so late…If I’m late for school again, I’ll get another demerit and if that happens I’ll be suspended.
Connie: Ok…
Jennifer: I’m not avoiding you…I really want to see you.
Connie: It’s ok…how about we do this…why don’t you come over for dinner on Thursday night?
Andy shoots her a look.
Jennifer: Really?
Connie: Yes.
Jennifer: That would be great. I have field hockey till 5…I could be there by 6 if that’s ok with you?
Connie: Six sounds great. See you then.
Jennifer: Cool…all right Chloe…I know…I know…I gotta go. Bye.
Connie: Bye.
Andy: What’s up?
Connie: She overslept…she’s coming for dinner on Thursday.
Andy: (Walks over and takes her hand into his) Tell her then?
Connie: Good a time as any.
Andy: Good. (Kissing her forehead) You’re doin’ the right thing.
Connie: (Letting out a sigh) God, I hope so.
3:45pm
Tony’s Bar&Grill
Andy: This guy gives you any shit like before…
Connie: Andy, let’s not go in with that attitude, ok?
Andy: Just sayin’ is all.
Connie: Relax.
As they enter the bar, they need a few seconds to let their eyes adjust from the sunlight. Andy takes a quick look around but doesn’t see Richard Beck. Andy and Connie take a seat at the bar and order a couple of sodas.
Andy: (Looking at his watch) How long you gonna give this guy?
Connie: We just got here. (Placing her hand on his arm) I need you here with me…I need your support.
Andy: All right…sorry.
A few minutes later, Andy spots Beck coming from the men’s room.
Andy: (To Connie) Here we are. (Nodding in Beck’s direction)
R.B.: Barkeep…another (holding up an empty glass)
Connie: Mr. Beck…
R.B.: Yeah…
Connie: Mr. Beck…I don’t believe you’ve met my husband, Andy Sipowicz.
Andy: (Offering his hand to shake) Howzitgoin’?
R.B.: (Turning in Andy’s direction) How zit going? Great…just great.
Andy realizes he’s drunk and starts looking for a quiet place to sit and talk.
Andy: Why don’t we get a table over here (pointing to the back of the bar)
R.B.: Why don’t you say what you need to and go.
Connie: Mr. Beck, c’mon lets sit down.
R.B.: Let’s not.
Andy: (Half whispering to Connie) C’mon let’s go…he’s drunk…we’re outta here.
R.B.: Yeah, go…you got what you wanted you friggin’ bitch.
Andy: What did you just say?
Connie: (Placing herself between Andy & Beck) Pardon me?
R.B.: You heard me…you got what you wanted…now go.
Connie: We came here in hopes of reaching an arrangement we could all live with…some middle ground…
R.B.: (Finishing his drink, then looking at Connie) Why don’t you go before I put you in the ground.
Andy: THAT’S IT!!
Connie: (Holding Andy back) Andy! He’s not worth it.
Andy: I’m not lettin’ him talk to you like that and walk outta here with all his teeth…
Connie: (Still holding Andy back) Andy…he’s not worth it…back off…NOW!
R.B.: Well…I can see who wears the paints in this relationship…(looking at Andy) she got you whipped pretty good huh?
Andy: (Trying to get past Connie) Motherfucker…
Bartender: Hey…do I need to call the cops?
Connie: NO…we are the cops…Andy, lets go.
Connie has herself right between Andy and Beck. She pushes hard into Andy’s chest to get his attention.
Andy: (Finally looking at Connie) Just let me beat…
Connie: And accomplish what…loosing your job…loosing your pension? He ain’t worth the sweat off your balls.
She has Andy’s attention. He gives her one hard look, which she returns in full. She nods towards the door. Andy tosses some money on the bar and turns to go. Connie is holding his arm when he swings free and takes off in Beck’s direction. Andy gets within an inch of Beck’s face.
Andy: (In an angry whisper) Next time jitbag…next time.
Richard Beck finally realizes he is not dealing with just anyone. Beck can feel the heat coming off Andy. Beck leans back on the bar in an attempt to get Andy out of his face. Andy stairs into Beck’s eyes while holding his fist to the side of Beck’s face.
Andy: She’s right…you’re not worth it.
In the car outside the bar, Andy and Connie sit in silence. Andy is seething. He really wanted to beat the crap out of Richard Beck. He had too much pent up energy to drive. He was afraid to open his mouth for fear of saying the wrong thing to Connie. She is extremely frustrated. All she wanted was to speak to Richard Beck in hopes of gaining some insight as to why Jennifer took such a drastic step. In dealing with him for the past few days, Connie can almost understand why Jennifer did what she did.
Connie reaches over for Andy’s hand. First she needs to calm him down. After that she can talk to him about moving forward. Andy sees her hand from the corner of his eye. He looks out the driver’s side window at the entrance to the bar, and then he looks over at Connie who is looking straight ahead. He closes his eyes and interlocks his fingers with hers. Her touch is soothing.
Andy: That went well.
Connie slowly looks over in his direction. The corners of her mouth show the hint of a smile coming to the surface. She shakes her head as she returns her gaze straight-ahead.
Andy: Sorry.
Connie: For what?
Andy: For bein’ an asshole.
Connie: I hardly call defending my honor being an asshole.
Andy: Still…I could have handled that better.
Connie: We both could have.
Andy: He was drunk…I should have…
Connie: We…we should have. You didn’t go in there alone. I shouldn’t have agreed to meet him in a bar.
Andy: Then he never would have agreed to meet anywhere. He knew what he was doin’.
Connie: (Letting out a sigh) Well…that’s over with. Let’s go home.
Andy: (Starting the car) Sorry it didn’t work out.
Connie: (Leaning her head on his shoulder) Andy?
Andy: Yeah?
Connie: Take the long way.
Andy: Sure.
Thursday
6pm
Sipowicz home
The doorbell rings.
Theo: I’ll get it! (Opening the door) Hi, are you Jennifer?
Jennifer: Yes I am.
Theo: Hi, I’m Theo.
Jennifer: (Seeing Connie coming to the door) Hi Theo, nice to meet you.
Connie: C’mon in. (To Theo) Why don’t you go finish your homework?
Theo: Ok…nice to meet you.
Jennifer: Same here…he’s cute.
Connie: (Taking her coat) Yeah…he’s a good kid. He’s Andy’s son from a previous marriage.
Jennifer: Andy?
Connie: My husband. (Walking through the living room) And here’s Michelle.
Michelle is watching a Blue’s Clues tape.
Michelle: Mama…mama…(Holding out her arms to Connie)
Connie: (Picking her up) I adopted Michelle after her mother died. Her mother was my sister.
Jennifer: (With a stunned look on her face) Oh, man…
Connie: (Placing Michelle back on the couch) And over here is Robbie.
Robbie is rolling around in his playpen.
Jennifer: He’s a cutie…Hi big guy…and he’s…
Connie: He’s Andy’s son and mine.
Jennifer: (Taking a look around at all the kids) Family.
Connie: Family.
Andy comes out of the kitchen to meet Jennifer.
Connie: Jennifer…this is my husband, Andy.
Andy reaches out to shake her hand but is instead met with a hug. He shoots a look over Jennifer’s shoulder at Connie. She puts her hand to her mouth in an effort to hold back her tears. Andy gives her a warm hug.
Jennifer: (Taking a half step back) Nice to meet you.
Andy: Same here…welcome.
After the introductions, they sit down to dinner. Conversation was a little awkward at first but as the dinner went on, the mood relaxed and conversation flowed nicely. After dinner, Andy took charge of the little ones while Connie and Jennifer cleaned up. He felt they could use some quiet time together. Andy helped Theo finish up his homework. He gave Michelle a bath and got Robbie down for the night. Theo was allowed to stay up a little later which allowed Andy to read to Michelle. At 9 o’clock it was time for Theo to go to bed. Andy joins Connie and Jennifer in the kitchen.
Andy: (To Connie) Hey.
Connie: Hey…everyone down for the night?
Andy: Yep…how’s things?
Connie: Good.
One look at Connie and Andy knew it was time. He takes a seat next to Connie and nonchalantly places his arm on the back of Connie’s chair and gives her shoulder a squeeze. Jennifer looks at Connie, then to Andy.
Jennifer: This isn’t going to be good, is it?
Connie: It will be.
Jennifer: I can’t stay here, can I?
Andy: Don’t jump the gun.
Jennifer: Just tell me…yes or no?
Connie: It’s not that easy.
Jennifer: It’s no…right?
Connie: Jennifer…hear us out.
Connie takes a deep breath and lets it out real slow. Before beginning.
Connie: Andy and I had a long talk the other night after we spoke to your mother. She needs you.
Jennifer: Yeah right.
Connie: She does, believe me.
Jennifer: Your just trying to clear your conscience before you get rid of me again.
Andy: That’s not fair.
Jennifer: Not fair…I’ll tell you what’s not fair…being put up for adoption isn’t fair…never knowing where you came from ain’t fair…being shuttled form one house to another ain’t fair.
Andy: (Slightly aggravated) Life ain’t fair. Just listen to what we have to say.
Jennifer: Why…your minds already made up…(looking at Connie) Isn’t it?
Connie: Jennifer…
Jennifer: This sucks…
Andy: WHOA…
Connie: (Placing her hand on Andy’s arm) STOP…Just stop.
The tension in the room is thick. This is not what any of them wanted. Connie regathers her thoughts. There was so much she wanted to tell Jennifer…so much to explain.
Connie: We talked with your father. He wasn’t as cooperative as your mother.
Jennifer: Yeah? No kidding?
Connie: After we spoke to you mother and saw the pain she is in, we…Andy and I, thought it best if you would go back and help her through what she’s going through. Then after that…we’ll see about you living with us.
Jennifer: WHAT? She doesn’t even want…
Andy: Trust us…she does…she needs your help…she needs you.
Jennifer: How am I supposed to help her?
Connie: By just being there for her. By not adding more misery to her life. Her world is falling down around her; your leaving hasn’t helped her any. She needs something good in her life…she needs you.
Jennifer: And she told you this?
Andy: In not so many words…yes.
Jennifer: I’m only 17…am I suppose to listen to what a jerk-off my father is for doing this to her?
Connie: No one expects you to be her therapist. But you can be a source of something good in her life. When the rest of her world…
Jennifer: (Spitting mad) Why don’t you just say it…you don’t want me!
Andy: That’s it…(Standing up) First of all its not that cut and dry. You had yourself emancipated…declared an adult so to say…right? Now is the time to start acting like one.
Andy looks deeply at Jennifer. He didn’t want to come on too strong, but he felt he had to.
Andy: I don’t know what you know about me…personally…alls I can tell you is you have to resolve you problems not run away from them. Trust me…I was an expert when it came to that. I thought I could drink my problems away. I don’t want to see you come to something like that, cause you will. Maybe not drinkin’…but you’ll find some way to bury them. If you don’t learn now while you are young to deal with life’s problems…your never gonna be able to deal with them when you’re an adult. (He sits down across from Jennifer) It’s the stuff of your past that makes you what you are as an adult. Otherwise, your gonna find yourself goin’ form relationship to relationship wondering why they never work out and always blaming the other person. You didn’t want to be treated like a spare part in their divorce…I can respect that. What I can’t respect is you runnin’ away from somethin’ you can help fix.
This is what he and Connie talked about the other night. Were they doing right by Jennifer by just taking her in? Or were they teaching her it was right to run away from your problems? They talked deep into the night about what to do and say. If she was going to be apart of their lives, she had to know right from the start; they would not be enablers. They agreed to help her, to love her, and respect her decisions. They would not allow her to run roughshod over them or play the guilt card as it pleased her.
Andy didn’t mean to dominate as he did. Connie was too emotionally invested in the situation. He was an outsider. They had seen too many kids come through the system to know better. If he had to be the bad guy by shining this light, so be it.
Connie: Andy and I both have made our fair share of mistakes when it comes to relationships and even kids. We just don’t want to see you do the same when it could be avoided. Our door and our hearts will always be open to you. Why don’t you take a few minutes to think this through while we go check on the kids?
They leave Jennifer in the kitchen while they go to check on the kids. In the hallway upstairs, Andy takes Connie aside.
Andy: (Whispering) I’m sorry if I overstepped my bounds.
Connie: (Whispering) No, no, you were great. You said all that needed to be said. I was dragging my feet and letting my emotions get in the way. Really…you were great.
Andy: (Hugging Connie) It’s gonna be ok.
Connie: I know…I know…if you say it I believe it.
Andy: Do you want me to go back down with you…or should I stay up here?
Connie: No…I want you down with me. She’s tough. I’m afraid the “stubborn” gene got passed on to her.
They share a small laugh. After checking in on the kids, they make their way back down to Jennifer. They find her pacing in the kitchen, deep in thought. So deep she didn’t hear them come in. She jumps slightly when she sees them.
Jennifer: (Taking a seat at the table) I do miss her.
Connie: That’s good. That’s a good thing.
Jennifer: Sometimes she can be so…so…I don’t know…
Andy: Not everyone is as strong as we like to think they are. We have an image in our heads…per-set ideas of how we think people should be. And when it turns out that their not…it’s confusing. It’s a tough spot to be in.
Connie: (Sitting across from Jennifer) Do you want to go home? This isn’t going to work if you don’t want to go…
Jennifer: I do…
Andy walks up behind Connie and places his hands on her shoulders. He knows Jennifer is going to go. He wants Connie to know he’s there for her. He knows Connie can’t stand the thought of loosing her again…the thought of sending her away is killing her. But it had to be done. Connie could never live with herself knowing that Jennifer’s mother was on the other side of town dying to be with the daughter she raised form a baby. It didn’t sit right with Connie and until this was resolved she couldn’t allow Jennifer back in to her life.
Andy: Then there’s the first step. That’s usually the hardest. After that…you’ll see it all falls into place.
Jennifer: This isn’t exactly what I had planed.
Andy and Connie let out a small snicker.
Andy: Let me tell you somethin’…man plans and God laughs.
Jennifer looks at them with a very confused look on her face. She runs that thought through her head for a few minutes…then the light bulb goes on. She smiles at them.
Jennifer: I can still come and see you right?
Connie: Anytime you want.
Andy: Alls we ask is that you don’t play one against the other.
Jennifer: No I wouldn’t do that…I’ve seen my friends do it and it never works out. I’d like to come for a weekend or something like that…if it’s ok with you?
Connie: Absolutely.
Jennifer: Maybe baby-sit sometime? I’m certified. I took a class during the summer with my friend Lauren.
Andy: Good to know. That would be great.
Jennifer: (Looking to Andy) I should go tonight?
Andy: No time like the present. Do you want to give her a call first, maybe give her a heads up? If it’s ok with her…I’ll take you home.
Jennifer: Yeah…let me call.
Andy and Connie leave Jennifer in the kitchen to call her mother. Connie was glad to get away from her for a few minutes. She didn’t know how much longer she could hold herself together. Andy and Connie sit in the living room.
Connie: I was so afraid she was gonna have a tantrum and leave and never come back. Seems like she has a good head on her shoulders.
Andy: She should…look where she came from. (Looking deep into her eyes) You gave her life…they may have raised her…but you gave her life. She is a part of you and always will be.
Connie: (Holding his hand) Somedays Andy…somedays.
Andy: (Kissing the back of her hand) Yes they are.
Jennifer spoke to her mother for more than half an hour. When she was done she went to see Connie and Andy.
Jennifer: We’re good to go. She told me she loved me.
Connie: (Standing and hugging her) That’s great. This probably isn’t the first time you’ve heard this but…I told you so.
Jennifer: Yeah, right.
Although Connie’s heart was hurting, she wanted to see Jennifer smile, because if all of this makes her life better and happy, Connie would have to say it was all worth it. Hurting so bad never felt so good.
Connie: I promise you that I will always be here for you. If you just need me to be there for you as a friend, you will always be able to confide in me about anything. I’m here for you and I always will be. This is my promise to you.
Connie walks Jennifer to the door. There were hugs and kisses and promises to call. Andy drove Jennifer to Chloe’s house to get her things and then drove her home.
Andy: (Pulling up to Jennifer’s house) Here we are.
Jennifer: Yep.
Andy: Nervous?
Jennifer: Yep.
Andy: She’s your mother. There’s nothing to be nervous about. Five minutes and it will be like you never left.
Jennifer looks out the window and sees the entry hall light go on. Andy sees this also.
Andy: She’s waitin’ for you.
Jennifer: Yeah…feels good…strange but good. If that makes any sense.
Andy: Got a key?
Jennifer: Yeah, right here.
Andy: Let me walk you to the door.
Andy gets out and gets Jennifer’s bags together and walks her to the door. She hesitates for a few seconds before putting the key in the door.
Jennifer: (Looking at Andy) Wish me luck.
Andy: No need. It’s gonna be ok.
She smiles as she reaches over to give him a hug and a kiss on the cheek.
Jennifer: You two are good together.
Andy: Thanks. Let’s go.
As she opens the door Andy sees Mrs. Beck standing in the entryway. Jennifer walks in, puts her bags down and hugs her mother. Mrs. Beck looks over Jennifer’s shoulder seeing Andy and mouths Thank you to him. He nods and closes the door. A short time later he arrives home. He locks up for the night and heads up to bed where he finds Connie asleep. He quietly gets undressed and slips into bed beside her. She rolls over onto his chest. He hugs her.
Connie: (In a whisper) Thank you.
Andy: (Whispering back) Thank you for lettin’ me help. (To himself) and thank you God…for this woman.
10am
Coffee room
Andy is in the coffee room when Rita walks in.
Andy: (Nodding in her direction) What’s up?
Rita: Not much. Caught a dickey waver in the playground.
Andy: Hey, how’s Connie? She was quiet this morning…I didn’t want to press too hard before work.
Rita: She’s a little blue. She told me about last night, since then she’s been quiet like you said.
Andy: We have a date tonight…think she’s up for it?
Rita: I think maybe it’s just what she needs.
Andy: Yeah, huh?
Rita: Need help?
Andy: Let me think about it…I’ll get back to you.
5pm
Sipowicz house
Connie’s mood was no better at the end of her day. Jennifer was on her mind all day. Dealing with a guy who was dickey waving at the kids in the playground didn’t help. And now the thoughts of having to go out was just the icing on the cake. She didn’t know where she wanted to go. She didn’t have anything to wear. Just the thought of getting the kids ready for the sitter was enough to make her call it quits. As she opened the door she expected to be greeted by Theo and Michelle and Andrea handing Robbie off to her. That was not the case. Instead, it was noticeable quiet. As she makes her way through the living room she sees Andy coming from the kitchen.
Andy: Hey.
Connie: Hey…(looking around with a confused look on her face) What’s going on?
Andy: It’s date night.
Connie: Oh, Andy…
Andy: What…did you forget?
Connie: No…its…I don’t know where I want to go (plopping down on the couch) None of my stuff fits me any more cause I’m too fat…we have to get the kids ready…(looking around again) what the hell is going on?
Andy: (Kneeling in front of her) Theo is spending the night with John. They are goin’ to see Cat In The Hat. Tomorrow, they’re goin’ into Manhattan. Theo is gonna help John pick out Christmas gifts for his nephews.
Connie: Michelle?
Andy: With Rita…for the night. Here’s the best part…tomorrow Rita, John and Andrea, who is keepin’ Robbie overnight, are goin’ to see Santa Clause and have the kids get their picture taken with him. Everyone will be home, here by 6 o’clock tomorrow night for dinner…along with the sitters. So, from the looks of things…we have 24 hours…alone.
Connie: (Holding his face in her hands) This was supposed to be just a date.
Andy: I know…but with the week you had…I thought you could use the extra time. (Clearing his throat) And if you want to be totally alone…I have an offer from Jr. and Baldwin to join them at Mac’s to watch the Nicks game. (Kissing her palm) So…what’s it gonna be…go out, stay in, kick me out…whatever you want.
Connie: (Kissing his nose) You never scees to amaze me.
Andy: Good…now…what do you want?
Connie: (Taking a second to think) You know what I want…what I really want? I just don’t want to think. I’m sick of thinking.
Andy: We could do that. (He stands and offers her his hand) C’mon.
Connie: Where?
Andy: Wash away time.
She knew what that meant. He held her hand all the way to the bedroom. Once there, he helped her to get undressed. He walked her to the shower, got the water just right and sent her in.
Connie: Where you goin’?
Andy: I’ll be back in a minute.
He gave her five minutes alone to unwind. She did just that, letting the warm water run all over her body. True to his word he returned to find her a bit more relaxed. Wearing nothing but a smile, he joined her in the shower.
Andy: Nice thing about these old homes…
Connie: What’s that?
Andy: Extra big shower stalls…lots of room.
He removed the showerhead and ran it over her hair getting it good and wet. He got a handful of shampoo and began to lather her hair. He used the tips of his fingers to massage her scalp. He used small circular motions making sure not to rub too hard. He gently rubbed her temples and moved to the middle of her head. He gathered up her hair putting it atop her head and massaged the back of her scalp near her neck, afterwhich he rinsed her hair.
He loaded up her schrunchy with a big blob of Oil of Olay and worked it to a good lather. He brushed her hair aside and started at the back of her neck. He made slow, soft circular motions working his way across her shoulders and down her back. He paid extra attention to the small of her back, pressing just a bit harder to work out the knot of tension. He took his good old time doing her backside, mostly enjoying the view. He rubbed up and down her legs till she felt like she could no longer stand on her own. He removed the showerhead from its holder and rinsed her body.
He turned her around to face him. He brushed her hair back off her face and kissed her ever so softly on the lips. He left her wanting more of that. He relathered the schrunchy and began to wash the front of her body. He started at the nap of her neck. Slowly he worked his way over to her arms. From the outside of her shoulders to her fingertips with the slow circular motion. He returned to her chest and made a figure eight of her breast. Down her ribs to her hips, all the while looking deeply and lovingly into her eyes. Now on bended knee, he massaged her thighs, inside and out. Occasionally, he would let his thumb slip into the lips of her soft mound causing her to jump ever so slightly. He continued his journey down the front of her legs to her toes. She felt absolutely lightheaded. She leaned against the shower wall for support while he rinsed her off.
Taking her by the hand he led her out of the shower. Prior to joining her in the shower, he laid towels for drying her over the radiator. By now they felt like they had just come from the dryer. He patted her dry with one of them and then wrapped her in another one. He quickly dried himself off and put on his robe. He wrapped her hair up and led her to their bed. Before laying her down, he helped her to towel dry her hair. When he was done, he gently laid her on her stomach on the bed. He placed a sheet over her while he prepared for phase two.
He had stopped at a Bath & Body Works on his way home. He purchased a tube of Warm Vanilla Sugar body lotion with matching candles. He had left the lotion on the radiator to warm. He lit the candles and turned off the bedroom lights. The soft shimmer from the candles gave the room a feeling of being in a dream. He returned to the bed, pulled down the sheet and began to massage her body.
Connie: Andy?
Andy: Shhh…
Connie: Andy?
Andy: Humm?
Connie: You’re a god.
Andy: (Laughing) Yeah, thanks.
Starting at her toes, he worked his way up her body. He would rub hard and fast then change to slow and mathocal when doing her legs. Again he would allow his thumbs to wonder too near to her mound. Always apologizing for causing her to jump…but not really meaning it. He rubbed her backside, one cheek at a time. When he did, she let out a soft low moan of pleasure, just enough to let him know he was doing a good job. The small fire he started in the shower was growing stronger. He placed his thumbs on either side of her spine and slowly moved his way up her back. When he reached her shoulders, he rubbed slowly and deeply. He moved out her shoulders, down each arm to her fingertips, essentially chasing any tension left in her body. He left her feeling like a wet noodle. She was powerless and loving every minute of it. He covered her with a sheet then went to the bathroom clean up.
After he washed up, he checked in on her. He wouldn’t swear to it but he thought he heard her snoring. He went down to lock up for the night and grab something to eat. He made himself a sandwich. He made one for Connie if she would be hungry later. He took his snack into the living room and flipped on the TV. He muted the sound. He flipped around but nothing held his attention. He finished eating and cleaned up then went back upstairs. He stood in the bedroom doorway just looking at her. She looked at peace for the first time this week. He dare not disturb her. He quietly got into bed and lay beside her propped up on one elbow to get a good look at her.
Connie: That you?
Andy: You expectin’ someone else?
She rolled over to get a look at him. They lay face to face. She quietly places her hand on his face. With her thumb, she traces his lips. He parts them slightly and takes hold of her thumb between his teeth. He holds it there while his tongue runs circles around it. She slowly pulls her thumb back but he catches it in his lips and begins to softly suck on it. He releases his hold and she again begins to trace his lips. He brushes her hair back off her face then places his hand on the back of her neck and pulls her in for a kiss. Just before their lips meet, he looks deep into her eyes. He holds her there for a second or two then proceeds to kiss her waiting moist lips. She finds him so incredibly sweet and precious when he does that. Her nimble tongue pushes deep into his hungry mouth. She gives out a soft moan as his tongue meets hers. She tastes so sweet. He slowly opens his eyes as he kisses her and sees the mischief within them.
Andy: Suddenly we’re not so tired huh?
Connie: You bite my thumb like that and expect me to roll over and go to sleep?
She takes a wicked glance down his body and then back up to his eyes.
Andy: Oh, boy…your gonna be trouble tonight.
Connie: You started it.
Andy: That right?
Connie: Yeah right.
Andy: I don’t start anything I can’t finish.
Connie: (Rolling onto her back) Now whose gonna be trouble?
He pulls the covers over his head and starts nibbling on her ribs causing her to giggle and squirm. He positions himself between her legs and with his hands on her hips trying to hold her still while nibbling on her body. She half heartily tries to move away while smacking at the covers. He slides up her body to pin her down. With their fingers interlocked he holds them down above her head and dives in to kiss her madly and deeply.
He lay atop of her breast to breast. His hands slide down her body to her hips pulling her closer. She rakes his back with her nails causing him to flinch. He kisses her neck. She grabs his head bringing his face to hers. She kisses him and moans into his mouth as he shifts his weight. His pelvis rubbing on hers, she anticipates feeling his hardness. He breaks from her lips and begins to kiss her upper chest. He slides himself down making sure to apply pressure to her pelvis. He sucks on her breast. She pulls his head closer. He stops what he is doing to look up at her. He throws the covers off of himself and rolls off her. They are both trying to catch their breath.
Connie: (Panting) What’s wrong?
Andy: Oh, nothin’…I’m just not in the mood any more is all.
She shoots a look over at him. He’s biting down hard on his bottom lip trying to hold back a smile.
Connie: Ooohh you brat…(Straddling him) Well lets see what we can do about that?
She moves in slow motion to his chest where she begins to kiss his body. She bypasses his pelvis and begins to kiss his thighs. With her teeth, she pulls his boxers off of him. Tossing them aside she continues to kiss his thighs and pelvis region. She slides her lips around the head of his penis, allowing her tongue to swirl around it as she slides it in and out of her mouth. Her lips close tightly around his throbbing shaft. He reaches down to brush her hair out of the way so he can see her face. She has a wild yet playful look in her eyes. She runs her teeth along the edge of his head. Slowly she sucks the tip of his penis into her mouth. He moans like he wants more and she obliges him. It is an incredible turn on for her to see the delight on his face. She alternates between stroking with her mouth and stroking with her hand. Sucking, kissing, licking his head, like she can’t get enough.
Andy: Whoa…hey…slow down…slow down…
She rests her chin on his stomach looking up at him. She slowly moistens her lips with her tongue, teasing him.
Connie: Show me.
Andy: Show you what?
Connie: (Moving to lie beside him) Show me slow…
He takes her hand and one by one, gently kisses her fingertips and then her palm. Softly he continues up her arm to her neck. With feather like kisses he works his way to her lips. He hovers over her staring into her eyes while his hand cups her cheek. He kisses each of her eyes then her nose before moving to her lips. Just barely touching her lips, his tongue parts her lips and starts a slow, seductive search for her tongue. When he finds it he starts a game of cat and mouse…touching then not touching…touching then not touching. All the while his sweet breath seduces her lips. She reaches up to pull him closer, but he denies her by pulling back.
Andy: (Whispering) Patience…
Connie: You’re making me crazy…
Andy: (Whispering) Patience…close your eyes…now put your hands under your head…
And she does. For as big a man as he is, she could hardly feel him on herself. He leaves her lips and begins to kiss his way down her body. These are extremely soft and lingering kisses. On the right side…then the left. Never the same place twice. Ribs, neck, belly, thighs…she couldn’t tell where he was going next. He kissed her breast while his fingers played with the other. Just as she was getting into that, he moved to her hips and began kissing and lightly biting her hipbone. She tried to thrust her pelvis, but he was gone from there moving onto her legs.
Connie: (Just above a whisper) Andy?
Andy: Shhh…
Connie: Andy, your making me nuts….
Andy: (Kissing her belly) Umm huh…
He leaves a moist trail with his tongue all down her belly to her pubic hairline. Just as she thinks he’s going to go down on her he pulls back and starts blowing softly on her inner thigh. He waits to see her reaction. She tries to thrust her moist mound at his mouth, but he backs up waiting for her to settle down. When she finally does, he gently laps at her outer lips. Her warm musk, her thick vapors make his head swoon. She hums low and rolls her hips. He would like to devour her with his tongue…he can’t hold himself back much longer…using his tongue, he parts her lips and savors her flavor. Playfully he lets his tongue wonder in her mound.
He stops what he is doing, changing his actions slightly, he probes her inner softness with one finger while he probes her lips and engorging clitoris with his tongue. She hardly keeps conscious from the pleasure she is feeling. She pumps her hips lightly as he places his hand on her belly letting his thumb lightly massage her clitoris. With his tongue he flicks at her swollen lips then nibbles her folds while he watches her squirm. His tongue reaches inside and the fire inside her explodes into his mouth. She thrust herself against him, urging him, wanting him as his tongue goes deeper.
Connie: OH GOD…ANDY…ANDY…AAAANNNDYYYY!!!
She thrashes her head from side to side. He is smiling even though there is no one to see him smile. Intense heat is running through her body, she arches her back to the ceiling…then quiet. Savoring the moment, he runs his fingers over her belly. Her skin feels like liquid silk. His touch is as light as a feather yet hot as a burning coal. His tongue circles her taught nipple. His mouth covers her nipple sucking and licking at the same time. She opens her legs to him…again.
Connie: Don’t make me beg…
He smiles devilishly at the though of it. Oh, the anticipation. His sweet seduction continues. He eases into her with the utmost care. She starts moving, slowly back and forth…each time letting him slip out further just to take him in in one motion. He grunts and moans from the pleasure of being in such a warm and loving place. He feels her tighten around his thickness as she begins her climax. She can feel him pulsate and then erupt inside her. Simultaneous orgasms. Violent, yet quiet orgasm rippling through her body. His body is tingling every inch of him. Her gentle moans and movements encourage him to capture her mouth with desperate urgency. They revel in the warmth of each other.
11pm
Sipowicz bedroom
Connie opens her eyes. Her left side is numb. She looks down to see Andy asleep on her. Feeling the impulse to wake him she compromised with herself by leaning down and lightly kissing the top of his head. This caused him to stir enough for her to slide out from under him. She gives herself a few minutes to regain the feeling in her legs and arms. She realizes she is starving. She had not eaten all day. Quietly she gets out of bed, puts on her robe and heads for the kitchen. She prays there is something quick and easy to make and eat. She opens the fridge and looks around. Nothing. Naturally. Then just as she is about to close the door something catches her eye. A plate covered in foil with a piece of paper on it. She removes it from the fridge to find ‘Connie” in Andy’s handwriting. She smiles and nods her head.
Connie: (To herself outloud) Only Andy.
She takes the plate and sits down at the table. He made her a turkey and cheese sandwich. He even remembered to put the pickle on the side. She falls in love with him a hundred times a day for the hundred little things he does for her everyday. She eats her sandwich while she reads the sale ads for the following week. When she is finished eating, she cleans up and starts to go upstairs. She looks out the living room window and sees that it has started snowing. Not feeling all that tired, she decides to sit and watch the snow fall for a while. And that’s when the week that just passed smacks her in the face.
This whole week she has kept it locked up inside. She lets herself feel. She will feel it down to her very soul. You can’t tell just by looking, that her heart’s been cut real, real deep. There is a wound inside her. The ache is deep as ever, the hurt will not be denied tonight. Her heart breaks and it hurts. She wanted so badly to keep Jennifer. She thought she’d earned the right this time. But what she thought and what she felt were too far apart. Her words were telling Jennifer to go home to her mother while her heart was screaming STAY . Mind-vs-heart…very rarely do they work together. She knows she did the right thing. Then why did it sting so bad? Because she had done just what Andy told her not to do…get ahead of herself, which she did. She’s only human. So, putting her kick-ass facade on a shelf for tonight, she will let herself feel. His loving has opened her soul. Now, in the safety of aloneness, she will not censor her tears. She will take this moment and be selfish and let the tears fall. In the end she will be stronger. Time does that. Time and love.
She has lost all track of time. She must have been at it for a while judging by the amount of snow now covering the front lawn. She has a splitting headache. She dries her eyes with the sleeve of her robe. She is hoping that is the end of it. She knows tomorrow when she gets up, it won’t hurt as bad. She has come to realize that life, right now, has different paths for the both of them. Someday, she and her daughter will share a road together. Just not today. Strange how some journeys end.
As she is about to return to bed, she feels him. She turns and sees him standing behind her.
Connie: How long you been standing there?
Andy: Long enough.
Connie returns to looking out the window. Andy walks up behind her and hugs her softly around her waist resting his chin on her shoulder.
Connie: Pretty…isn’t it?
Andy: Yep…sure is.
Connie: Andy…
Andy: You did the right thing. (Turning her to face him) You’re so much braver than I give you credit for. I mean that.
Connie: Thanks.
These two people living, giving out the best to each other. Now comes the time for closeness once again. He, holding her for the woman that she is. She, being ever so thankful for him.
