Chapter 2

Look What The Wedding Dragged In

It was quite possible the nicest day weather wise. Not too hot. That was good news for Andy. The cooler weather put his fear of over-perspiration to rest for a bit. John Irving arrived at Andy & Connie's' apt. promptly at noon. John was not only performing the ceremony he also volunteered to act as wedding co-ordinator. Andy & Connie had done many things for him in the past. He just felt this would be a great way to say thanks. Both Andy & Connie trusted his taste. Well, maybe more Connie than Andy. Connie was looking for something simple, yet elegant. John got the idea. John and Connie's' mom would spend their time together keeping Connie cool-headed and decorating. He brought with him Gerbera Daisies. They were beautiful. Some were single and some were double petaled in bi-color patterns with contrasting centers. He had some candles that matched some of the colors of the daisies. Among his assortment were a few floating heart shaped and rose shaped candles. There were long and short candles also. There weren't any banners or crape paper streamers. He felt they were garish. He did bring a few balloons, but they were for the kids.

The caterer made it to the apt. around two o'clock. John had gone to one of Andy & Connie's' favorite restaurants and asked if they would help to cater the celebration. On the menu was Filet Mignon in a Marchand De Vin Sauce, garnished with sprigs of parsley. Mashed garlic potatoes and a Caesar salad. Oh, and of course, chicken nuggets and fish sticks for the younger guest. Connie's' mom was getting everything set in the kitchen while John set the mood through out the rest of the apt.

Mom: Ok, dinner is heating----now I'll need some help with the hors d'oeuvres.

Just as she said that, the doorbell rang. John looked at his watch;

John: Oh my goodness, its 3 o'clock already.

Mom: That's ok, more hands to help.

John: Good thinking, now I see where Connie gets it from.

John opens the door to see Theo & Jr.

John I. Welcome home Theo!

Theo: Hay John. Wow, cool! Can I have a balloon, please?

John I: Maybe later, how about now you help us put out the food?

Theo: (rolling his eyes like his father) Ok.

Jr. Hello, Mrs. McDowell, I'm John Clark. I work with Andy & Connie.

Mom: How nice to meet you. I was sorry to hear about your dad. How are you these days?

Jr.: Thanks for your concern. Things are gettin' better. Anything I can do to help?

Mom: I'm so glad you asked..........

They stroll off to the kitchen to see what Theo and John are up to.

Connie: Hay guys. Oh my, The apt looks wonderful John. Thanks so much. Hay Theo, (giving him a hug) How are you? Did you have fun last night with Jr. and daddy?

Theo: Yeah, we had pizza and ice cream. Can I have a balloon, please?

Connie: Maybe later, how about now we go get dressed?

Theo: Then can I have one?

Connie: Sure.

Theo: Lets go.

Connie takes Theo to his room to help him get dressed. She had gotten him a new suit that almost matched his fathers suit. Navy blue jacket and paints with a light blue short sleeved shirt and a off white tie.

The doorbell rings again.

Jr.: I'll get it.

He opens to find

Jr: Rita.

Rita: Hay John.

Jr.:How are you?

Rita: Good.

He gives her a hug, there is a moment of awkward silence.

Rita: Well, what's goin' on here?

They enter the apt.

Rita: John, thanks for the cards and phone calls. I appreciate the thoughts.

Jr. I just wanted you to know I was thinking of you.

Rita: Thanks.

Doorbell

Jr.: Got it.

Rita goes into the kitchen to see if she can be a help. Mom asked her if she could help with making the punch.

Rita: Sounds great.

Mom: Ok, we're making a Champagne punch.

Rita: Ok then, lets get to work.

Andrea: Hay guys. My don't you look grown up Theo. A fine young man.

Kati: Hay Theo. (giving him a big hug) Look how big you've gotten. And how handsome. Gosh I miss you.

Theo: I miss you too. Want to come see my room???

Kati: Sure Theo.

She gives Greg her coat and pocketbook.

Greg: I'll put these in the hall closet.

Kati: Thank you Greg, I'll be right back.

Greg: No problem. James.........Why don't we go see if we can find Theo, would you like that big guy???

James jr.: ok

James and Gina make their way into the kitchen, exchanging hellos with everyone. Mom is making sure everyone has a job. She is handing out hors d'oeuvres and telling them where to place them.

Doorbell

James: I'll get it..........Oh my God, Diane

Diane: James (they hug and kiss) You look great. Are you solo or is Gina with you tonight??

James: Gina and the little guy.

Diane: Great

Greg comes over to sat hello as well as John I and Kati.

Kati: This is so nice . I'm so happy for the both of them. All are in agreement on that.

Everyone was having a great time either catching up or making new friends. Connie was in her bedroom with her mom. Connie is in a tea length, champagne colored dress. A little conventional, but on her it was radiant. Val and Greg knock on her door

Val: Connie, its Val and Greg, can we come in??

Connie: Sure.

Val: You look beautiful, Connie

Greg: Absolutely

Connie: Thanks, guys. What's up??

Greg: I just wanted to give you somethin'.

Connie: Greg, that's not necessary.

Greg: Its for good luck. I did it recently for my daughter and I want to do it for you now.

Greg: A penny in your shoe for good luck. I know you and Andy will be great together (he gives he a kiss on the cheek)

Connie: Greg, that is so sweet, thank you.

Val: Do you have everything you need to get married?

Connie: Excuse me??

Val: You know, something old, something new.........

Connie: Ummm

Mom: Here's something old........your grandmothers pearls

Greg: Stunning........Connie, they look great.

Val: Something new???

Connie: I got that.........earrings........Andy gave them to me yesterday.....a wedding present.

They were tiny teardrop shaped pearl earrings

Mom: Good choice.

Connie: Yeah, I wonder.........(her voice trailed off)

Val: Something borrowed??

Connie: Ummm

Val: Here use my handkerchief.....actually its my grandmothers. Its been through several weddings .......all with good results.

Connie: Thank you Val.

Mom: Something blue??

Knock on the door

Jr: Are you decent???

Connie: Not since high school.......but come in anyway.

Jr: Andrea asked me to give you this.

Connie opened the box and found a garter trimmed in blue.

Connie: Cool

Greg: Ok time to go.......See ya in a bit

Val: Alright, maybe we should all go (she takes Jr. by the arm and exits the room)

Connie turns to her mom with tears in her eyes

Connie: What a group.

Mom: I can see why you are so happy. They are a great group of people. You don't often get that, where your good friends with the people you work with

Connie: I know.

Connie was thrilled her mom was with her today.

Connie: I wish dad and Michelle were here today.

Mom: They are.

They both start to cry and hug

Mom: Ok, stop we're ruining our make-up

Connie: Mom, I love Andy so much.

Mom: I know, he's a good man.

Her mom sits on the edge of the bed.

Mom: I have a little secret to tell you. Come sit with me.

Connie sits with her mom on the bed.

Mom: It was a day or so after the adoption was finalized. Andy called me. He hated doing it over the phone.

Connie: Doin' what?

Mom: Asking permission to marry you. He was so sweet. He told me everything about himself. He said he would understand if I objected. He reassured me you would have a good life with him. and he would , how did he put it..........oh, yes, keep care over you and Michelle. He also paid for my airline ticket.

Connie: I had no idea. .......see that's what I mean about him being a good man..

Mom: At first I thought he was too old for you, but after speakin with him, I felt, regardless of age and all his baggage, if he felt that strong for you and you in return............he must be a good man. A special man.

Connie: Oh, mom, he is. Speakin' of Andy........I wonder where he is????

Everyone was there. The only person missing from the scene was the man himself.......Andrew Sipowicz. He was uptown, keeping a very special appointment.
