Chapter 5

Everybody Wang Chung Tonight

And there was much rejoicing. After the ceremony, all had best wishes for Andy & Connie. Now let the festivities begin.

Gerg: Let's eat. The food smells great.

Baldwin: I'm with you on that one, partner.

Connies' mom, John and Kati go into the kitchen to check on the food. Its' good to go.

Mom: Kati, would you check and see if we have enough dishes?

Kati: Sure. Should I lay everything out buffet style?

John: Good idea. Lets' start with the dishes.

John had gone to a good will store and found charming bone white china with a gold trim. He had rolled the utensils in a off white linen napkin tied with a gold ribbon.

Kati: John, I think you missed your calling in life. Did you ever consider doing this full time?

John: oh good God no! With the stress of today, I think I lost 10 lbs.

Kait: Well, rest easy. Everything is marvelous.

Mom: Outstanding job, John.

John: Thank you both. I tried to keep it simple like Connie said.

Mom: You should be proud.

Once the food was set to go, Andy & Connie stole a moment for themselves. They quietly made their way to the bedroom. Their sanctuary. With their arms around each other, they kissed.

Andy: Hungey??

Connie: Not for food.

Andy: Ah, we got a house full of people out there.

Connie: Good (as she squeezes his backside and pulls him closer)

Andy: Better save some of that for tonight.

Connie: Rest assured my good man, there is plenty more of that to come.

Andy: You sure you want to be talkin' to a married man like that?

Connie: Its' ok, I'm a married woman.

Andy holds her face in his hands and takes a swim in her eyes. He kisses he forehead.

Andy: Well, Mrs. Sipowicz, shall we join the others?

Connie: Yes, Mr. Sipowicz, lets. (one more kiss and squeeze before they join the others)

Connie: Can I fix you a plate?

Andy: In a minute.

Connie goes off to get something to eat. With the anxiety of the day behind her, she is suddenly famished. Andy stands by the bedroom door and soakes in the atmosphere. As he scans the apartment, he feels gratified in seeing everyone having a enjoyable time. There are small tables with 2 or 3 people sitting and eating. The mix of candle light and the sunset, are causing unusual patterns on the ceiling and walls. He smiles. John catches his eye. Andy nods for him to come over.

John: Is everything ok?

Andy: No........Better than ok. Great comes to mind.

John: (letting out a huge sigh of relief) I thought there might be a problem.

Andy: The only problem I got is how to say thank you for all you 've done for us today.

John: It has been my honor and pleasure to do this for you and Connie.

Andy: You know, if it were up to me, we'd be in Maryland somewhere. But that idea didn't over too well last time, so I didn't even bother to ask this time. John, really, how do I thank you for all this?

John: For all that you have done and continue to do, this is just my way of saying thank you. For your good counsel and friendship. I know at work we have to remain professional. Outside of that, I would like to think of you as a father figure. If that's ok with you? If you don't mind?

Andy: No. I don't mind, John. I would like that.

John: Good. Now, have you had anything to eat yet?

Andy: No, I'm not all that hungry.

John: Well you have to eat something. You'll need your strength for tonight.

Andy shoots him a look>

John: I mean for the rest of the ...........never mind...........I don't know what I mean.

Andy: It's ok. Maybe you got a point there.

Theo: Daddy, would you like some of my chicken nuggets or some fish stix?

Andy: No thanks Squirt, I think I'm gonna have some adult food.

Theo: Ok.......but you don't know what your missin'.

Andy: (to himself------yes I do--------heartburn) Lets see if Jones and Medavoy left us any food.

After everyone has finished eating, the tables and chairs are put aside and the furniture is pushed aside to make a small dance floor. John has burned a few cds with a good mix of music. Some slow stuff and some dance, just a nice mix

Jr: (lightly tapping a spoon on his glass) Attention everyone. (everyone gathers around him) Connie, Andy stand here please.(he puts them next to him).I would like to make a toast to Andy & Connie..

Greg: Here, here.

Jr: Thank you Greg. I thought about this since Andy asked me to be his best man. This is probably the hardest job of being a best man. But for me it was very easy. I immediately knew what to say. There was an old Irish blessing my mom had taped to her bedroom mirror. I read it every day. I'm finally glad to meet the two people it was ment for. A glass if you please held higher than the rest Andy & Connie: May you be poor in misfortune,

Rich in blessings,

Slow to make enemies,

Quick to make friends

But rich, or poor, quick or slow

May you know nothing but happiness

From this day forward.

All: Here, here!!!

Everyone gathers in to clang glasses with Andy & Connie. John slips away to find a song for them to dance to. The music starts and Connie looks at Andy

Connie: Shall we??

Andy: What are you kiddin' me?

Jr: ANDY!

Andy: Alright.

The group forms a circle round them as they dance to "At Last" by Etta James.

Andy feels awkward at first, then she touches his neck and pulls him in. He gets a whiff of her hair and everyone and everythig fades into nothingness. It's just the two of them, in their own private world. She feels soooo good, so soft. This exquisite woman. The feeling was mutual. She could sense all of his fierce passion was right on the edge. They had no aphrodisiac but need for each other. Not even caring the song was over, they continued to hold each other and dance. real sloooow. Everyone else went about their business. All in all, it has been a grand night.

Unexpectedly, Andy's pager goes off.

Andy: I thought I told you to turn that thing off?

Jr: I put it back on at 4:30. When you didn't show, I thought there might be a problem. It's the hospital.

Andy: Shit, Lt. Rodriguez.

Connie: Maybe you should call from the bedroom.

Andy) Yeah.

He makes his way to the bedroom. He suspects a dilemma. The day has been so good, he doesn't want any bad news. He dials up the number.

Andy: Yeah, this is Sipowicz, you paged me. Is there a problem??.............I'll hold.............Loo?

Lt. Rodriguez: Hay Andy.

Andy: Everythin' alright? Is there a problem??

Lt: No, no, no everything is fine. I'm sorry I missed you today. I was at rehab practicing going up and down steps. My sister said you were by today. Everything alright on your end??

Andy: (a wave of relief falls over his face) Great. I just wanted to see how you were doing and run a few things past you, nothing that can't wait.

Lt: Ya sure. You come see me on a Saturday, and nothing urgent.

Andy: Nope.

Lt: Ok, well, how was the rest of your day?

Andy: Great.

Lt: Alright then, I'll see you tomorrow?

Andy: Better make it Monday.

Lt: Good then, oh, Andy?

Andy:: yeah?

Lt: Congratulations.

Andy was genuinely sorry that Lt. Rodriguez couldn't be there with them. Their relationship has grown over the last few years they been together. Andy would like to think of it more than boss/subordinate. A friendship perhaps. Andy knows he feels the same, otherwise, why would he be making this call?

Andy: Thanks. I'll see ya Monday.

Lt: Lookin' forward to seein' you. Goodnight.

Andy: Yeah, goodnight.

Connie and Jr. join Andy in the bedroom.

Connie: Everything ok?

Andy: Yeah, good.

Jr: Whats up?

Andy: I stopped by to see him this morning. He just wanted me to know why he wasn't in his room. He was in rehab doin' steps, up and down stuff.

Jr: Thats a good sign.

Connie: Anything else?

Andy: He says congratulations.

Jr; Yeah, huh?

They look at each other and smile.

Jr: while I've got you two alone, I wanted to give this to you.(he hands Andy an envelope)

Andy: Whats this then?

Connie: I thought we told you all absolutely no gifts.

Jr.: Yeah, right.

Andy: Jr!?

Jr: Andy, you wouldn't let us throw you a bachelor party or anything else for that matter. And Connie wouldn't allow gifts. So we all desided to listen to Andy and not to Connie.

Andy opens the envelope and finds a hotel key. The key was for a room at the Radisson Lexington Hotel in the heart of Manhattan's fashionable East Side. The room was for tonight and Sunday brunch.

Connie: Tonight??!!

Jr: Yes, tonight. Your mom is going to stay here with Michelle. Theo is coming home with me. Everyone else is staying to help John clean up. So, you got no reason to say no. Don't think. Just go-------NOW!. Throw some stuff in an overnight bag. Greg has the limo waiting for you.

Andy: A limo?? What the hell??

Jr: Greg had caught this guy and a pross. doin' it while he was driving. Turns out he's married and has kids. He drives a limo to makes some extra bucks. So, Greg gave him a pass. Joe(the lomo driver) told Greg if he ever need a driver, he do it no charge.

Andy: You're nuts if you think I'm drivin' with a guy who has tendencies to throw humps while drivin'.

Jr: It wasn't a hump.......it was a hand job.

Andy: So that's suppose to make it better?

Jr: Come on Andy. He's doin' Greg a solid.

Andy: I don't.........

Connie: Relax, it'll be fine.

Andy: Does anyone else know about this?

Jr: No.

Andy: (rubbing his head) You better not be lying to me.

Jr: Not a chance. Now come on. Move.

Connie: I can't.......my mom.......the kids.........

Jr: I told you its all taken care of. Look, I really didn't want to play this card, but if you don't get goin' I'm gettin' Baldwin in here.

Andy and Connie look at each other then to Jr.

Jr: Come on Greg is waitin' down there for you two.

Andy: (looking at Connie) Alright?

Connie: Alright.

Jr: Good, I tell Greg you'll be down in a few minuets.

As Jr. leaves Connie's mom comes into the room.

Mom: What are you two still doing here?

Connie: Mom, are you sure about staying here with Michelle. You've had a big day already.

Mom: Andera said she would stay and put Michelle down for the night. The rest I can handle. I still remember how to feed and change a baby.

Connie: But you've done so much today.........

Mom: Connie, Happy Wedding Day! Now, get some things together and start saying good bye to your guest. Come on, get your butts in gear.

Andy and Connie start to pack up some essentials. They are both sort of in a daze. They make their way out to see their guest.

Andy: (clearing his throat) Thank you.......all.........very much.

Connie starts giving hugs and kisses to all.....Andy stands by for a minute then clearing his throat again;

Andy: Connie, Medavoy is waitin' for us.......lets go.

Connie: Alright, Thank you all. I don't know what to say.........I........We love you all very much.

Out the door they go. Greg has been holding up traffic for what seems like forever.Connie runs over and gives him a kiss on the cheek.

Greg: Well now, that more than makes up for havin' to put up with these idiots.

Andy: Didn't you show your shield?

Greg: I thought about it then all I could see was Martenz, so.........

Andy: Anyways........Thanks Greg.

Greg: Andy, you called me Greg.

Andy: That is your name, right??

Greg: This is a special night.

Andy: Easy............(Andy cracks a smile and extends his hand to Greg) Goodnight, Medavoy.

Connie: Thanks Greg. Your the best.

Greg: God bless------both of you..............have a good time.

Off they go into the night.
